It was the day after the sorting, and Xin woke up to the rays of the sun shining through the half-closed windows. For a moment, the girl thought she was back in London. It was just a dream, she told herself miserably, I dreamt about being sorted, and now mother is going to wake me up. However, as she got out of bed, Xin saw the crimson Thestral Thicket dorm looking back at her. The Gryffindor sighed in relief, she didn't want to leave Hogwarts yet.
Several minutes later, Xin emerged from the Gryffindor common room with her brand new uniform on. Grabbing WALL-E, who had just finished his nighttime search for food, she slid down the banisters and only stopped at the Great Hall for breakfast.
The Great Hall was like the day before. Even in the early mornings, the room was filled to the brim with students and laughing and chattering. Xin gulped, being in such a people-filled room was not the talent of hers. She felt at once claustrophobic and drifting in a sea of strangers. After a few minutes of gawking, the girl took a few steps towards the Gryffindor table, WALL-E nuzzling up to her. That offered the girl some comfort, as she placed herself at the very end of the table, careful to choose the furthest seat from students.
Suddenly a loud whooshing noise caught her attention. Looking up, birds, hundreds of them, swooped in and and dropped parcels and letters to students. It took a closer look to realize the creatures weren't just any kind of bird, but owls. It was an amazing sight, and students from all corners of the room looked up to witness this magical scene. WALL-E gave an indignant squeak as he scampered into the safety of Xin's robe pocket.
"Now now WALL-E, they're just owls who won't hurt you," the witch chortled as the rat's head poked out of the pocket, "You reminded me though, it's time to tuck in!" After another chuckle, Xin began devouring a loaf of toast, feeding some cheese to her pet, while WALL-E responded with a satisfying squeak and scurried onto the table top to enjoy.

Ying woke up feeling one of the luckiest people on the planet! Growing up in a muggle family where magic was a fantasy written in books and showed in movies just to make people dream about it, how perfect life would be with a wand and spells, how adventurous exhilarating and wonderful! And she, a simple twelve years old girl, had been blessed to make of those stories her own story, her life! Hogwarts felt home, and a month out of those walls felt like a purgatory. Was like getting out of a dream and being forced to live through real life again...how boring! To make everything worse, the only moments of peace she had was between classes, yes, classes, you read it right! Poor soul had to be studying French and philosophy, those two subjects that she was having troubles to feel a passion for...at least she could have study french in Paris...but noooo, London Fang's mansion it was!
Ying sighed releasing herself from those bitter thoughts, she had woke up feeling so well, why would she start to think about her muggle life? A life she never would feel anxious to live again. Putting on her school robes that she missed so much the young girl put her black satchel at her shoulder and walked out her dorm.
Walking in her usual confident footsteps along those old stone corridors, Ying felt happy and as more alive as she had ever felt. Students were filling every corner with their talks and laughs, some were running, screaming, playing together! It was like a perfect picture of a chaotic happiness that the young Gryffindor had learned to love.
Arriving the Great Hall she reached to the red and gold table, colors that she wears to her heart and soul, and sat in the wooden bench. She was starting to put some fruit in her plate when there came the familiar rustling of feathers and the occasional hooting from the dozens of owls that appeared soaring above the enchanted sky of the great hall. Mail time at Hogwarts was probably one of the things Ying had more difficulties to feel comfortable with. Not that she didn't liked those beautiful birds...not the first time she had interacted with them, since that was the way her brother always sent her his letters, but a hundred birds flying over you food? How would that be hygienic? Even with magic she would prefer to eat her food clean of feathers and...other possible stuff!
"Now now WALL-E, they're just owls who won't hurt you," Ying heard the girl sat in front of her, speaking to a place somewhere down on her lap, "You reminded me though, it's time to tuck in!" she cheerfully said starting to have her breakfast giving WALL-E, whatever that was, pieces of cheese. Oh! Cheese...a rat? Ying thought that that could be a possibility, since many students choose to have one has their pets. Ying wasn't a fan of rats...she always wanted to have a cat, she hoped that her parents would give her one, one day. Or Ming...he could definitely give her one, has an awesome big brother he was!
"Can you pass me the pumpkin juice please?" She asked to the new girl. The jar was right next to her and Ying didn't felt like stretching her arm over the porridge. "Are you a first year? I don't remember to have seen you around last year!" Ying smiled kindly to her. She had black long silky hair and some cheeky small freckles appeared in her beautiful face. "I'm Fang Hui-Ying by the way! And...who's WALL-E? Is an interesting name!" She stated joyfully while putting some juice in her copper cup. Then she took a sip and looked at the young lion, waiting and listening her answers with curiosity.

| "Can you pass me the pumpkin juice please?" A voice popping out of the blue made Xin jump a little. Turning around to the source of the voice, she saw a girl - probably older by a year or two - looking at her expectantly. The slightly older girl had familiar asian features like people in Shanghai and all around China, long dark brown hair and a pale ivory face completed the look. Seeing the girl made Xin miss Shanghai even more. She saw the Pearl Tower and Lu Jia Zui, all the cars and people in the morning rush hour. And what's more, she wanted to catch a glimpse of the red-brick school building with her friends playing inside and the familiar apartment she used to live in. Then the girl reminded herself that she shouldn't complain, not in such a beautiful and glorious castle with a lot of friendly students. Smiling slightly, Xin scanned the table "给你, here you go" before the lion could correct herself, the words had already slipped out of her mouth in subconsciousness. Her cheeks turned a brilliant shade of crimson, similar, perhaps even redder than the Gryffindor banner hanging on the ceiling. Biting her lip, she muttered,"Sorry about that… what I mean is, here you go." Diverting her gaze down on the floor, Xin felt her ears growing hotter by the second. "Are you a first year? I don't remember to have seen you around last year!" the girl smiled kindly. "Yep," Xin replied, grateful that the girl had moved on to another topic. "I just arrived yesterday." The older girl looked pretty caring, so the young lion decided to trust her. "I'm Fang Hui-Ying by the way! And...who's WALL-E? Is an interesting name!" Another question which Xin replied with a cheery smile. "I'm Fang Yun-Xin," she grinned shyly, "Oh, and WALL-E's just a name I got from the muggle movie WALL-E I think it fits my pet here well." The brown mouse, who had been quietly nibbling the piece of mozzarella until then, squeaked and scrambled up to Xin's shoulder to have a better look at the older girl. "Well, how is life in Hogwarts like?" Xin asked while petting WALL-E lovingly. "Are the classes hard?" | ||

The younger Gryffindor seemed to have been startled by Ying's sudden request, she muffled a laughed giving in just a small chuckle to the girl's reaction, "I'm sorry, scaring you wasn't my intention! I swear!" She said with an open smile. Ying's eyes gained an even brighter glow when the other girl replied to her using her native language while reaching the juice jar to her. It was so nice to meet someone with the same roots and origins, everything felt more cozy and Ying's heart jumped slightly with happiness feeling at home. At the same time, she felt like she had been given the mission to make the other girl feel welcomed in Hogwarts and responsible for making sure she would feel at home too.
"Sorry about that… what I mean is, here you go." the other girl said to her. Ying that had been distracted putting some juice in her cup, did not understood at first why the apologies...but glancing again at the young Gryffindor she noticed the other girl's embarrassment that was written in her red beautiful cheeks and in her eyes that were looking down. "谢谢, Thank you" Ying said, finally understanding why was that all about. Then she decided that she wanted to get to know more things about the young girl.
"Yep," the other replied, saying that she had just arrived the day before confirming Ying's suspicions that she was a first year. "Fang huh?" Ying cheekily asked with a glint of waggery in her dark brown eyes when Yun-Xin told her name. "Oh!!" She exclaimed remembering the movie Xin was talking about, "I remember seeing some pictures of that movie, but I never saw it!" She admitted interested, "I heard it is a little bit sad, it's story...is true?" She asked making a mental note to see that movie next time she would be travelling home.
Ying wondered if Xin was also a muggle-born and if this was just her second day at the magical world. She remembered as if it has been yesterday, the day she had arrived to Hogwarts, how strange and beautiful everything looked and felt like. But she wouldn't ask little Fang about that, it wouldn't be polite and it would probably cause her to feel uncomfortable in answering it. "Life at Hogwarts..." Ying started looking up as she was thinking nodding slightly, "Is..uh...quite a mix of feelings to be honest" she decided to answer being truthful, "It is strange, surprising, defies common sense, challenging, but...the best thing that happened to me!" She said with a smile crossing her arms on top of the table and looking at Xin, leaning slightly further "You'll have loads of fun little Fang, you can be sure of that!" She assured before starting to serve herself from a portion of fruit, grapes, slices of watermelon and orange. "You want some?" She offered Xin, if she said yes then she would put some fruit in the other girl's plate too.

| Xin grinned sheepishly as Ying let out a small chuckle to the girl's reaction. But the he first year took that as a good sign. She knew the second year was just kidding around and not being serious, instead of mocking and jeering like some people she knew. “谢谢, Thank you” It took her by surprise. Did the girl just speak Chinese? IS SHE CHINESE? the words were screaming inside her mind as she processed what conclusions she can get from this piece of new information. Definitely from China, Xin concluded after her brain had stopped whirring. Still, it might be better to ask first before being judgmental, the lion reminded herself with a silent command. “So,” she began, “你是中国人,对吧?You're Chinese, aren't you?” While the lion waited for Ying's answer as she dug into an omelette filled with mozzarella - Who could refuse the delicious mozzarella? - the second year suddenly went into a conversation on WALL-E. “I heard it is a little bit sad, it's story...is true?” Ying asked, looking quite intrigued. “Well, some of it,” Xin replied, her mouth full of cheese and egg and mushroom, she didn't want to care about manners now. “But its mainly a love story between WALL-E, and another robot called Eve, and it's soooooo sweet! We could watch the movie together during the holidays.” The young lion was quite surprised by how easy it was talking to Ying. Just five minutes ago they were complete strangers. And now, here Xin was setting up a playdate. It was, in a word, irregular. Highly irregular. But before she could ponder this question a little bit further, her newest friend started talking again. “It's the best thing that happened to me too...” Xin smiled at the memory of standing on the pavement outside her apartment, throwing out her hand and then - BAM, the knight bus appeared out of thin air, its sign glinting through the darkness like cat's eyes. “You know, the knight bus was pretty thrilling.” That remark certainly stretching the truth to a breaking point, as the knight bus wasn't just thrilling, it was a little very extremely nauseous as well. “You'll have loads of fun little Fang, you can be sure of that!” assured Ying with a glint of mischief in her beautiful dark brown eyes. “I am sure of that!” Xin laughed and accepted the second year's offer of fruit, “Thank you so much.” | ||

Ying smiled with Xin's question. She felt a warmth covering her heart in understanding of the little girl's feelings, she also shared of those sentiments every time she was able to find something new that would make her feel at home in that, still in many ways, strange place. "Yes, I was born in London but my family is from China and I've lived there until I came here, to Hogwarts." She answered.
Then after giving a small bite in one of those orange slices and clean herself with the napkin she continued, "Where are you from in China?" she asked with curiosity, it would be a very big coincidence if they had the same roots...but it would be nice to have someone to meet there...maybe the next holidays wouldn't be so lonely. And was like the same idea had crossed both their minds, "Yes, we can definitely watch that movie together, I would love too!" Ying replied enthusiastically, "With popcorns! I like them with tons of caramel!" She said grinning at the other girl sat across from her.
"The knight bus?" Ying asked confused, an image of a bus with a silver armor, a sword and an shield crossing her mind. That was something she had never heard about, "What's that?" She asked frowning slightly but her expression still showed amusement. Ying waited for Xin's answer with curiosity building inside of her. There was still so many things for the young lion to find out about that magical world.
"The first time I saw magic was when I made snowflakes fall in the living room. It was Christmas and I wanted to play outside. My parents didn't let me go and so I brought snow inside!" She told with a small chuckle "You should have seen my parents surprise! I have no idea what have crossed their minds, but I was extremely happy to find out I was like my 哥哥! big brother" Ying admitted, her memories from that moment bringing to her the joy she felt at that time.
