Others: ✕Monica stirred in her bed. The faint smell of bacon and eggs assaulted her senses. She didn't wish to get up. It all still felt like a dream, like she just had to simply wait it out, and she would still be in her Slytherin chamber.....
But no. This wasn't a dream. She was home.
Despite her best efforts, Monica simply couldn't find any alternative place to stay over the summer. She had some formal invitation from Astrid to attend some Pureblood events, but those were all in August. Meaning she didn't even get summer camp to look forward to. The worst part was that Astrid could only have her in August. She was dealing with some matters, that Monica wasn't permitted to know about.
So here she was... for a whole month, having no where else to be but home.
A small knock came from her door, and the Slytherin just tossed over, playing up a deep sleep, hoping this intruder wouldn't bother her. "I know that trick." The faint voice of her sister filled the room. Monica took a breath, and slowly sat up, "It was worth a try." She stated, faintly.
"Sure," Replied Victoria, "But you really think you can use my own tricks against me?" A small smirk grew on both girls faces, Monica scooted over in her bed, as Victoria closed the door, and made her way over to join her sister.
The two sat in silence for a while, so still that their individual breaths could be heard. Victoria eventually broke such silence, "Mom's been asking about you...." She paused for a moment, seeing if Monica would give any sort of reaction. "Moni, she is trying her best.... this is new for all of us. Don't you think we ought to tackle it together?" A breath escaped Monica's lips, since she had returned home, all her emotions became empty pockets where they used to sit. She didn't feel anything.
The truth is, since she found out about her hidden adoption, Monica never contacted her parents. Her sister had been the only family in her life she remained in touch with. Had Victoria been staying at her flat over the summer, Monica would have just stayed with her. But due to her uni living situation being over because of the summer, both girls found themselves back at the Evans' household.... waiting to leave.
Monica stroked the soft side of her blanket, "I just wish.... Why didn't they tell me anything?" Her words were sharp, and pointed. She could feel the anger finding it's home again in her heart. "Are they scared of me? Because I'm a witch?" For anyone, news of their adoption would be a lot to take in, but for Monica, what was so painful wasn't the fact she was adopted, but the fact it was hidden, and avoided her whole life. And since she had been accepted to Hogwarts, distance with her parents became much more evident. They seemed to be pulling away from her. And at 13, how do you go about processing that?
Victoria rubbed Monica's back. It would seem that their parents kept everyone in the dark. All Monica's thoughts consumed by the question of why. A tear pooled in her eye, though she tried to fight it back. Victoria looked at her sister, probably feeling rather helpless in this situation, searching for the words to say, or something that she could do...
Then in a moment, she stood up. "Alright.... you know what, life sucks right now, there is no denying that!" Monica's gazed followed her sister as she paced around the room. "Let's go out for the day, and just for a moment forget how messed up our parents are." She held out her hand, waiting for Monica to accept her rather cryptic invitation.
"Whatever you want to do, Shopping, movie. Hair salon...." Monica's eyes lit up.... Hair salon?.... A piece of her blue locks fell in front of her face. She gazed at it, as the memories of last summer came flooding in. This hair represented the person she was becoming. Strong brave, and a witch. But it covered up who she was.... and perhaps even distracted from who she was going to be.
Looking back at Victoria, with anticipation in her eyes, Monica shrugged her shoulders, "It's been a while since I got my hair done..." Barely even a response was shared before the elder sister grabbed Monica's hand, and with that they were off.
Victoria had this incredible gift of turning a crummy situation, into some sort of adventure. And today was no exception. Monica would soon discover that this day, would mark the beginning of her long journey of self discovery.
Entering the car, Monica was reminded of how wonderful it was to drive. To have a phone that plays whatever song you want. She quickly took Victoria's phone, making a queue for the travel. All of her choices consisted of Halestorm, one of Monica's favourite bands. The music swelled in the car, the windows were down, and it seeped into the streets they passed, neither of them cared if their jam session was bothering others.
Once the pair arrived at a salon, the stylist asked the question, "So what are we looking to do today?" The choice Monica made, was one that perfectly reflected the journey she would be on in the year to come. Making sense of her past, and discovering the person she was going to be. She asked for her hair to be a chestnut brown, close to her natural black hair, but reflecting more her desire of choosing the person she was to be. Not willing to fully let the blue go, after all it was her 'witch look' She requested it to be the base of her hair. The new foundation to who she was. The combination of her past and future represented in this new style.
Sure getting her hair done was no big feet, or life changing event. But in some ways, it did help Monica. It highlighted the crossroads she found herself at. and opened the conversation. Who was she? And how was she going to discover herself?
