A Little Ice Cream and a Lot of Mess

@Charlie Jacobsen“Yes, Cassie. I am fine to shop on my own. You and Kora can go look at the pets. I can find my books on my own,” said Sage. Sage crossed her arms across her chest and stared Cassie down. She did not want to seem like the girl who needed too much help. Cassie hesitated and glanced at the list clutched tightly in her fist.
“You are sure you will be alright by yourself?” Cassie asked. “Kora and I will be close by in case you need us,” she insisted. Sage grinned. Finally, some time to herself. Ever since she got her letter, Cassie had been obsessed with making sure Sage was ready for Hogwarts. Sage turned and faced the bookstore. She was able to find her books rather easily and as a treat, she decided to buy herself some ice cream. As she sat eating her treat, she quickly realized she had forgotten to buy one of her books. Sage stood quickly and raced back to the store. Her books were her tight across her chest with her ice cream in her hand. Her list was tucked into one of her pockets to her jacket. She was just entering the store when she collided with another girl. Her ice cream spilled all over the ground and smeared all over her books.
“Hey! Watch where you’re going!” shouted Sage.

Charlie was in a mood. It wasn’t a good mood or even a bad mood. It was a meh mood. And of course Charlie’s mom had insisted that they go shopping for school supplies, as they had gotten her letter recently and they still hadn’t gotten the supplies.
Charlie and her mum had to drag Eliza, her little sister along, and she was begging for ice cream and chocolate frogs during the whole trip, and finally just before they went into their last shop, florish and blotts, Charlie exploded. “FINE!” She yelled at her sister, who gave a small yelp in a response. “Go get your stupid chocolate frogs.” she said as she stormed off into she shop.
Charlie went around the shop grabbing every book she needed. Well only the bare necessities that she actually needed. Unlike the stereotypical Ravenclaw, Charlie hated reading, so she spent zero time looking around. She did spot a Quidditch book that she was tempted to get, but didn’t.
As she was leaving the shop clutching the mile long stack of books, she ran into someone who was entering the shop. The girl had ice cream and a stack of books, which went everywhere. The girl told her to watch where she was going. “It doesn’t matter,” Charlie replied, grumpier than before, as she sorted the books into two different piles. “Thats too bad about your books,” she said in a grumpy tone, after the girls had gotten out of the way of other shoppers.

@Charlie JacobsenToo bad about my books? Ugh! She could at least offer me some help picking up. It is her fault after all, thought Sage angrily. Sage wiped some of the melted ice cream off her books.
“Look what you have done! Great, now I have to get brand new books,” said Sage with a shake of her head. She moved out of the way and sighed. Maybe Cassie should have stayed to help me, Sage thought sadly. Not wanting to seem like a total jerk to this new girl, she decided she had better show a bit of sympathy to the girl she had run into.
“Sorry. I am just a bit flustered with all this preparation for Hogwarts. My name is Sage and I am going to be a first year. What is your name and what year will you be?” asked Sage. She glanced down at her books, uncertain of what to do with them. She certainly could not use the books now, they were ruined! She looked around for a garage of sorts to throw the books in. “Do- do you know where I could find a garage? I need to throw these books away,” explained Sage. She lifted the ruined books for the girl to see. Sage caught the sight of her ice cream on her prosthetic leg and she immediately groaned. Sage had always taken good care of her leg and now the fact it was just a bit dirty frustrated her. This day was not shaping out to be even halfway decent.

The girl, who Charlie would later learn that her name was Sage, was angry. Honestly, that was pretty much expected. If someone would have pretty much destroyed Charlie's books, she would have also been devastated or angry enough to punch the person that did it. "Sorry." Charlie said, her voice screaming I don't really care but I'm pretty sure the right thing to say is sorry.
The girl pretty much just stood there, staring at her stack of books that were drenched in ice cream. The she spoke again. She told Charlie that she was a first year, which was pretty obvious to Charlie, as she had first year books. She also was a Hogwarts student. "Well, I'm Charlie, Second year." She said, speaking the least amount of words possible, because today she really didn't feel like socializing.
The girl then went on talking about how she wanted to throw the books away, but Charlie stopped her. "I dunno if this will work but maybe the shop keepers would give you a refund since you literally just bought the books?" Charlie wondered out loud. She had no clue if that would actually work, or if the Sage girl would be spending more of her galleons and sickles. "As for the mess, I think I have something that might work. Scourgify!" She said, as she attempted to cast the spell, with her wand, which she had slipped out of her pocket. Being a Dhapmir, Charlie had no clue if the spell would be sucessful or not.
Charlie made the ‘S’ shaped wand movement and watched as her spell attempt was successful! The floor was instantly cleaned. “Oh. It worked,” She shrugged and said when she saw the successful. “Anyways… What are you gonna do about your books?” She added.

“Nice to meet you, Charlie,”said Sage who still wiped ice cream off her clothes, leg, and books desperately to salvage them. Second year? She might know more about fixing stains and spills than me, thought Sage. Sage looked up and met Charlie’s eye when she suggested getting a refund for the books.
“ That might work,”thought Sage aloud. “ Good idea.”She offered a smile towards Charlie. Sage was debating whether or not to beg the shopkeepers for a refund to prove to Cassie she could do something as simple as buying books and buying ice cream by herself when Charlie spoke up again. Sage watched, eyes wide in wonder, as Charlie waved her wand and recited a spell.
“Whoa,”breathed Sage when the mess disappeared from the ground. “That was so cool!”She cringed at the eagerness of a small child in her voice. She had seen Cassie do magic sometimes before so she wasn’t completely new to the concept of spells, but seeing someone around her age perform such a spell fascinated her.
“I’ll probably go see if I can get a refund,”answered Sage after Charlie asked her what she would do about her books. She wiped at a smudge of ice cream on her leg once again before glazing back at Charlie.
“Thanks again for your help,”she thanked the older girl. “Maybe I’ll see you around at Hogwarts?” Sage lifted her hand in a wave good-bye and turned to walk inside the shop to replace her books. Maybe this trip hadn’t been such a mess.

Charlie did not care even one little bit about this girl Sage’s books getting absolutely ruined. It wasn’t her problem, it was that girl Sage’s ice cream. Who would even want to get ice cream before they purchased brand new books? To be honest, Charlie probably wouldn’t even have cared if it was her own ice cream. Well, she would’ve been mad about loosing the ice cream, but she would have let Sage deal with her own messed up books.
Sage's reaction to her one of the most basic spells in the first spell book was interesting. She reminded Charlie of her little sister who ooh-ed and ahh-ed over every single little spell and bit of magic she saw. But the thing was, there was no way that Sage was muggle born because no decent parent would let their apparently magical child wander around and buy unknown books and supplies from a foreign place. So why had Sage never seen magic before? Charlie didn't want to think about this strange girl who happened to be missing her leg anymore than she had to.
Charlie adjusted the bag she was carrying while she listened to Sage blab on about getting a refund and a polite goodbye. Charlie tried her best to not visibly cringe as she said "Yep. Sure." The shortest response she could physically muster up. As soon as Sage moved, Charlie hurried in the shop and immediately grabbed every book she would need for her second year at Hogwarts.
