Its December 27, two days after Christmas. Ara's family got home from Japan a lot earlier than usual since they had one of those family friend dinners today. Ara was a bit mad that they couldn't spend more time in Japan but she knew she had no choice. The family arrived the day before the dinner. The girl was in her room since they came back, praying that the family friend had no children to arrange friendships with. She was honestly tired of it. Although she would almost never talk to them again, she found it a bit useless.

Ara woke up at 7:30am, a bit later than she does wake up but she needed that extra 30 minutes of energy. She got out of bed, wrote an owl to her cousins, got dressed, and went down the stairs. The ravenette greeted the maids as she went down. "A bit later than usual, Miss Ara" one the chefs named Cleo said as she entered the kitchen to get her breakfast. "I needed some more energy for today... I hate these dinners. Thanks Cleo." she says as Cleo handed her breakfast. Her breakfast was on a wooden tray. It had miso soup, rice, a small portion of fish, and some lettuce. It was a small breakfast but Ara has a very small appetite so she doesn't really mind. By the time she finished, it was now 8 am. Her siblings went down the stairs one-by-one, grabbing their trays by the counter. "°Hey Ara! Mum said that they're coming at 11 am to have lunch and dinner with us°" her eldest brother, Peter said, making Ara's tired eyes widen. Her other siblings didn't mind though. "°WHAT?! You gotta be joking°" the girl said. Peter shook his head. The ravenette groaned and went to the garden to calm down.

Time passed, it was now 10:25 am. Catherine called her in to change into more formal clothing. She picked her outfit. It was formal enough yet casual at the same time. When she went to the entrance, she saw her siblings who are now ready to greet the guests. Ara wondered where her parents are but she didn't bother too much.

They heard a knock. Their youngest, Hallie opened the door.

Christmas had come and gone fast this year. The blur of the season had sort of snuck up on the Waincrofts. With Noah’s birthday being so close, there hadn’t been much time to see other people. It was the second Christmas she had a step-mother, and things seemed to be going well, except for one minor issue. Her step-mom Sarah, had previously built relationships with people. In theory, there was nothing wrong with this, but in practice all Sarah wanted to do was show off the ring Noah’s father had given her. It had been over two years and Sarah was still dragging Noah and her dad all around England for it. This weekend it was a family named the Villa’s.

Noah was kind of over the whole thing before she had even gotten to her destination. She was tired and didn’t want to go, but Sarah said there were kids her own age there so she had to. She would have much rather stayed home and slept the last two weeks away. So, she decided that if she could rest then she’d make sure no one else would be happy either. She was 11 after all, and didn’t have the maturity to control her emotions like the older kids did. Though she was curious about the kids her age that were supposed to be there. Sarah told her specifically that her friend had a daughter that was 12 years old.

The entire ride over, Noah talked to Sarah about this ‘new friend’ she was supposed to make. What was she like? Where was she from? Had she lived in England her whole life? There were so many things that she wanted to ask the girl. But she wouldn’t because of her previously made decision. As they arrived at the Villa’s house, Noah could help but wonder how this encounter was going to go. Was it going to end in a new friend or a new enemy? Who could say.

So, as her family walked up to the door to knock on it with their vegetable tray in hand (to be polite Sarah said) Noah had a frown on her face and a tired heart.

Hallie opened the door with the second oldest, Catherine behind her. When she opened it, they, saw the Waincoft's. "Welcome! Please come in!" Catherine greeted. Soon after she greeted, the rest of the siblings followed. Ara just bowed with her unamused face. Peter held the food that the woman brought.

Ara saw a 10-11 year old girl. 'So... They have a daughter about my age.. Dang it-' the ravenette thought. She knew what was coming afterall. Ara knew the friendship will be targeted at her since she has barely made any friends at Hogwarts. Ara looked at the family with her tired, unamused face. She then looked at them with a forced smile. Her 3rd oldest siblings, Edmund led the guests to the dining table where she saw her parents.

Low and behold, the person infront of her was the daughter of the Waincoft's. Ara's mother, Mitsuki introduced her children to the guests. "That's my eldest, Peter. He's visiting home from his travels. There's my beautiful daughter, Catherine, she's 16. This is Edmund, he is 13. That's Ara, she's 12. And that little girl is Hallie, she is 9." Mitsuki says. The ravenette assumed that the Waincoft's were her mother's friends. It seemed like they haven't met each other in a long time too. The whole group was still waiting for the food, Ara thinks that it will arrive no later than 30 minutes from now. She was sure of it. "°Who's that?°" The girl whispers to Edmund. "°Don't know°" he replied. 'Great help Ed' the ravenette thought sarcastically.

"Now who's this little lady?" Mitsuki said, referring to the daughter. Looks like Ara's question will be answered soon.

After they knocked, the door creaked open revealing the Villa family. There seemed to be 5 kids and their parents.

They were then ushered in the door and to the table where they met the parents and introduced to all the children. There was Peter, who seemed to be home for a short time from traveling, Catherine and Edmund who were teenagers, Ara, and Hallie who was the youngest. Their mom said Ara was 12, which meant she was closest to Noah in age. Maybe she attended Hogwarts? After all, Noah hadn’t yet gotten her letter but she was hoping for it. She’d had her first instance of magic a couple of years ago and she was 11 now so it shouldn’t be long before she received it.

Ms. Villa then startled her out of her thoughts by asking who she was. “I’m Noah. It’s nice to meet you all.” She replied and sat down at one of the seats around the table. Sarah hadn’t warned her that her friend had 5 kids. She felt a little awkward being the only other kid there. There were so many Villa kids who had grown up around each other. Noah’s family was just the three of them and she didn’t have any siblings she knew about. She had cousins but she hadn’t seen any of them in a while so she wasn’t super comfortable around them either.

Her stomach grumbled. She realized she had spaced out a little and now everyone was staring at her. She looked around the table and saw there was no food on it yet. “What, I’m hungry.” She stated half teasingly and half irritably receiving a stern look from her father.

After Noah's remark, Ara smiled and almost laughed but controlled herself. The ravenette stood up and went to the kitchen, the warmth of the dishes cooking made her sleepy. She grabbed a piece of onigiri and returned to the table. "Don't worry, lunch is coming soon. If you want to, you can eat this while waiting." Ara says as she gives Noah onigiri. The girl went back to her seat. "°Did you get that from the right table in the corner of the kitchen?°" Edmund whispered, "°Yea?°" Ara whispers back. "°That's mine!°" he says, "°Not anymore°" The girl rolls her eyes.

A minute later, lunch arrived. There were many dishes, Japanese and British meals were there. Ara got her rice bowl, miso soup, and put some noodles, soup, and toppings in her other bowl. She ate some tonkatsu with her rice too. The girl's appetite has increased because the time she in the garden was spent planting. The ravenette ate her food quietly and properly while the adults and her other siblings chatted. She was the only quiet one in their family.

Ara was eating peacefully. She didn't mind being invisible, she was quite delighted actually. Peter and Catherine checked up on her a bit to make sure she wasn't uncomfortable or not eating though. Hallie was enjoying her conversation with Mr. Waincoft and Catherine was having a conversation with Ms. Waincoft. Ms. Waincoft seemed to not be Noah's real mother. Noah didn't seem close to her and she looked irritated with her.

After Noah’s stomach grumbled, Ara handed her something she had never seen before. It was a triangular rice thing with seaweed around it, for lack of a better word. She wasn’t thrilled about it as she thought rice was a little bland, but to be polite she ate it. It wasn’t bad by any means, but Noah didn’t think she’d ever make it herself.

“Thank you” she replied with her mouth full. She appreciated Ara’s gift of food. Though after Ara had given her the snack, she went back to her seat. Right after, lunch arrived and Noah dug in. She was starving and everything looked so good. She didn’t know what the names of anything were, but she didn’t really care. All she cared about was if it tasted good or not and all of it was wonderful.

While they were eating Noah noticed Ara didn’t really talk. Everyone else was pretty chatty but Noah didn’t really have anything to say to any of the adults. So as she was sitting there, she decided to try and start a conversation with Ara. Noah thought she might benefit from talking to her. Because Noah was of the belief that everyone obviously benefited from talking to her.

“So”, she said “how long do you think my step-mom is going to brag about her precious ring? One hour, two? Wanna bet?”

Noah offered to make a bet with Ara. For how long that woman will brag about her ring. The girl put her utensils down and faced Noah, "Hmm... 1 hour and somewhere between 30 and 50 minutes." She placed her bet. "1 galleon or 3?" She offered, smirking. 'So that woman isn't her birth mother? Its quite obvious though... Noah seems to hate her. God she talks loud though.' Ara thought.

"Let me guess... every dinner she just brags about that precious ring of hers? Quite pathetic honestly" she whispers as she gets some beef and puts it in her rice. Ara didn't mind speaking her opinion about people. Unless it was a strategy.

Noah's stepmother just kept on babbling about the ring of hers. 'Yea we get it. Its pure diamond blah blah blah...' Ara mocked in her mind. She may look prim and proper in the outside but she's a mischievous one in the inside. 'Noah seems like a nice accomplice.' she thinks. A few minutes later, ravenette finished eating and is just waiting for the rest of the table to finish. She was fast at eating so it wasn't abnormal for her to finish first especially because she was the quiet one and wasn't that distracted with conversations during the meal. Ara took out a book and started reading while sometimes glancing at the clock for the bet.

Noah was surprised that Ara actually decided to take her up on the bet. Ara didn’t strike her as the sort of person that would do that honestly. To be fair they had only known each other for about 2 hours, so who was she to judge?

“1 galleon and somewhere between 2 hours and 2 hours and 30 minutes. I’m, to be quite frank, broke and as we’re about the same age, I’d imagine you are as well. Though please correct me if I’m wrong. And as you’re betting 3 you probably have it but I don’t want to have to take all of your money when I win, and yes. This is a very frequent occurrence.” Noah rolled her eyes. “I agree, it is pathetic, but as my father married her, I have to put up with her until I leave for Hogwarts and in the summers.”

After that conversation, Noah went back to eating, and it seemed as if Ara did as well. When she was about half way done with her plate, Noah looked up to observe the others and how much they’d eaten so far. To her surprise, it looked as if Ara had already finished and, Noah chuckled a bit at the realization, Ara was reading? Noah envied the concentration skills it took to read among all the ‘oohs’ and ‘aah’s’ of her step-mother’s ring showcase. From all the commotion that was being made over it, one would think it was a high priced painting that came from some famous artist who died about a hundred years ago.

As the conversation continued to drown on and on, Noah grew board and decided to converse with Ara some more, as she seemed to be an interesting person to talk to. “Whatcha reading?” she asked.

"Sounds good. But you can take the 3 galleons if you win. It's really nothing." Ara said, "Ouch then" after Noah said that it was pathetic but they had to put up with her.

A few minutes after Ara started reading, her brother Edmund started to bother her since he was finished now too. "Yea will you stop talking to me about your nonexistent love life? Talk to Catherine or better yet the ring lady about it" she whispered loudly to him which made him shut up quicker. Then suddenly Noah asked her what she was reading, "Something worth paying attention to unlike your step mother" she side-eyes their parents chatting. Ara already disliked Noah's step mom ever since she entered the house, she just gave off that prissy, show-off vibe and Noah even confirmed that she didn't like her either which was inevitable of course. The ravenette looked around, 'Everyone's almost done...'

She kept on reading as everyone was finishing up their lunch. Her younger sister, Hallie was beside her, telling her for the hundredth time how excited she was to go to Hogwarts but she didn't mind. Ara looked at Edmund in disgust as he was busy chowing down his food like a madman. "Aren't you supposed to be well-mannered? You're like a hyena" she whispers.

'Hm. Everyone's done eating finally. Chatting was a disturbance' Ara observed. "Wanna end lunch and go to the stables or something?" She whispered to Noah. The ravenette knew how to end the meal in just a sentence or two. Although she's never had lunch with a family friend thing, she adjusted quickly and found a quick getaway.
