Rosie walked to the lake with Howie in silence. The other kids were so nosy and they weren't far enough out of ear shot to talk about feelings and relationships. Even if there had been no one around, Rosie probably wouldn't have been able to speak yet from nerves. What would she say to Howie? What if he didn't feel like she did? All the what if's kept playing in her mind until she almost turned around and bolted for the castle. Instead, she took a deep breath, steadied herself, and kept walking.

Eventually, they neared the water. Rosie looked around. There were still people around, but it didn't bother Rosie being seen with Howie. In fact, once she herself knew what was going on, she didn't care if the whole castle knew. She ventured a glance up at Howie and took his hand back in hers. She continued to walk, but altered her course so that they were walking around the lake instead of towards it.

"So..." She paused. Her voice was shaky. "Are we going to talk about this?" She squeezed Howie's hand to indicate what she meant. "People are asking questions, and I don't know what to say. Not that I need to say anything, but it'd be nice to know how to respond I guess is what I mean." That entire last statement had been a run on sentence. She sighed and turned her head to watch him as they walked. "I mean... you still like me, right?" She hoped he'd scoop her up into a hug and ask her to be his girlfriend, but she steeled herself for what could possibly the most awkward conversation of her life.

Howie walked out onto the grounds with Rosie, looking down to his feet as they strolled along. The days had grown warm as summer set in, the end of the school year was fast approaching. Soon, he would have to leave it all behind. Back to reality in a sense. He’d be going home to his muggle life. Howie looked around the grounds. He would miss Hogwarts, the sense of community, the friends, and especially the red head that accompanied him now.

They walked in silence, as there was no need to speak until they found a spot with some privacy. The two set a path around the lake, away from all the other students that were out enjoying the good weather. The time had come for them to figure out what they were to each other, to openly discuss the feelings they had held inside. He hoped she felt the same as he did, he hoped she would say yes to the question that had been burning in his mind for some time now.
"Are we going to talk about this?"
He smiled and squeezed her hand back as she spoke quickly about people asking questions and being curious of thier relationship. It was true, he had seen the people talking and pointing in thier direction. It didn’t bother him, but it was time to make it official.
"I mean... you still like me, right?"
Howie stopped on the spot, pulling Rosie in by her hand, drawing her close to him. He looked down into her eyes, his blue peering into her green. He had never been so sure of anything. “Yes Rosie, I like you a lot, and more than just a friend.” He reached out and grabbed her other hand. “I want you to be my girlfriend.”

Rosie's eyes widened in surprise as Howie drew her closer and took her other hand in his.
“I want you to be my girlfriend.”
She beamed up at him, her eyes locked on his. "Good. Because I want to be your girlfriend." She dropped his hands and threw her arms around his neck in a happy hug. Her laugh was like a little bell. One could hear the happiness in her laugh and see it in her face. She lingered in the hug for a moment, enjoying the feeling of being so close to him. As she pulled away, she gave him a quick kiss on the cheek... and blushed immediately.

As she stood in front of him, she again took his hands in hers. "Is this something that people can know?" Her voice quieted with the next sentence. "Or did you want it to be a secret?" She looked at the ground as she spoke, hoping with everything in her that he wanted to be public about their relationship. She took a deep breath and looked back up, a shy smile on her face. Even if he wanted to keep it a secret, she was happy just to be with him.

Howie’s face split in two with a smile. She wanted to be his girlfriend. He could barely believe it, just a few months ago he was a poor muggle kid with barely any friends. Look at him now! A wizard, at wizarding school, and he had girlfriend. His eyes gleamed with joy as he looked down into hers. She threw her arms around him into a hug, and he squeezed back, letting her up and spinning in a half circle. When her feet hit the ground, she leaned up and lightly kissed his cheek. Howie’s smile threatened to tear his face in two, his cheeks flushing. Not out of embarrassment, but with the flood of emotions. He could fly.
"Is this something that people can know?"
He held her hands again as she reached out. “Of course Rosie. There’s no way I want to keep it a secret. I’ll go scream it from the Astronomy tower if you’d like.” It was a bit exaggerated, but not too far off from how he was feeling. Howie couldn’t wait to tell anyone who would listen. He’d finally have an answer to all the pointing and whispers. Yup! That’s my girlfriend. “Did you want it to be secret?”

“Of course Rosie. There’s no way I want to keep it a secret. I’ll go scream it from the Astronomy tower if you’d like.”
Rosie laughed at the mental image and shook her head. "No, that's okay. I'm glad that's how you feel, though." She was so happy in this moment. Her cheeks were beginning to hurt from smiling.
“Did you want it to be secret?”
"No!" That had perhaps come out a little more forceful than what she had meant. She laughed. "Sorry. No. I want everyone to know, too. I'm proud to be your girlfriend." She turned to the nearest student, who was about fifteen meters away and inclined her head to Howie. "That's my boyfriend." The look the girl gave her was one of confusion. The move wasn't like her, but right now she felt a bit more daring than normal. She giggled and turned back to Howie.

She bit her bottom lip and began and her mood took on a bit more of a serious tone. "Are we going to tell our parents?" Her mother might not like it. If they hadn't planned to meet in Manchester this summer, Rosie wouldn't have cared. But how outside of the realm of possibility would it be for her mother to get in the way of the visit? On the other hand, hiding anything from her parents was very much unlike Rosie. What to do?

Howie couldn’t wipe the smile away from his face, it was most likely stuck there permanently. The phrase his mother used to yell at him came to mind when he was making faces. Keep at it and it’ll get stuck that way. Well, it turns out she was right, and it didnt bother Howie one bit.

His eyes widened as she almost yelled “No!” At his question, laughing with her as she apologized. His laughter doubled as she turned to the nearest student, yelling out that he was now hers. The young girl looked at them with a quite confused expression. Howie put on a smug look and made the ‘brush your shoulders off’ gesture, joining Rosie in the fun. As thier laughter faded she took on a slightly more serious tone.
"Are we going to tell our parents?"
Oh! Right. He hadn’t really thought about that. Howie had told them about making new friends in the letter he wrote them, but a girlfriend, now that was heavy news. “Umm...I don’t know. I’ve always told them everything, I couldn’t imagine keeping it from them. I think they’d be happy.” Then he thought of her parents. Her mother was so deeply religious. What if she forbid the relationship. What if she wouldn’t let Rosie visit over the summer. “Will you tell yours. I don’t want your mum to be upset with us.”

Rosie grinned up at Howie. Not even talking about her mother was going to make this feeling go away. She bit her bottom lip and looked at the ground in thought. "Well... If you tell your parents, do you think they would tell mine? I don't really want to hide it from mine either, but..." She trailed off, allowing her last sentence to hang in mid air. The couple were typically on the same page and she was sure that Howie knew what she meant without saying it now. She sighed and shook her head, seeming to be having a mild crisis. "I really don't want to not tell them either." She looked back up to Howie, meeting his eyes. "What do you think? Should I just tell them and hope they still let me come to visit?" She groaned and moved closer to Howie. She leaned her forehead in and, in a moment of uncharacteristic bravery, rested it on his forehead. She closed her eyes. "I don't know." Clearly the idea of lying by omission was tormenting her. "I really want to see you this summer." Her forehead still against his, her green eyes looked up and locked on his blue. They reminded Rosie of the ocean... or the sky. It was so easy to get lost in his eyes.

Howie smiled back at her, listening as she played out the predicament. It was true, they were in quite the pickle. Things were already so tense between Rosie and her mum, would a boyfriend push her over the edge. He wondered if her mother’s deep religious beliefs would make her view thier relationship as a sinful act. What if she freaked out and forbid Rosie from seeing him over the summer. The idea was already so firmly planted in Howie’s mind, the thought of it falling through would be devastating for him.

His mind was racing as she stepped closer to him leaning forward to place her forehead against his. Howie’s worries slipped away. Her bright green eyes were so close to his. If only there weren’t so many people around. He slid an arm behind her, rubbing her back gently. “I don’t know Rosie. I’ll be so disappointed if I can’t see you this summer. I can’t imagine not seeing you for months, but lying to our parents can’t be the right choice.” His brow scrunched up as he thought, a hard task considering how close she was. Then it came to him. “Well...we shouldn’t lie, or not tell them. What if we wait till you come. If they freak, at least we will have been able to see each other.” He really didn’t want to, but he pulled his face back to better judge her reaction.

Rosie 's excitement showed on her face at Howie's suggestion. "We could tell them together." Her smile was sweet and unsure. "Unless you think that would be awkward? I mean... its not like we're getting married or anything." She stopped in her tracks. She blushed furiously, realizing what she had said. Oh yeah, she was mortified. "I just mean that in the movies the couple always tells their parents together when they're getting married or having a baby." God... she just made it worse! "I'm going to shut up now." She laid her head down on his shoulder as if to bury her embarrassment along with her face.

She hazarded a glance back up at him, meeting his eyes. "I think that's a good idea." She shook her head amused at herself. "Do you think there will ever be a day I don't say all the wrong things around you?" She laughed softly. Her cheeks were still rosie... get it? But she was more comfortable around Howie now, so she could admit her embarrassments and short comings.

Rosie laced her arm through Howie's and began their walk around the lake again, this time at his side. She liked walking like this. It felt nice. Right, somehow.

Howie smiled back as she thought over his idea. He giggled as she spoke of marriage, her cheeks blushing furiously. Rosie had become much more confident since they had met, but still had moments of being unsure and feeling embarrassed. All of which Howie thought were quite adorable. He laughed out loud when she blurted out about announcing a baby. She was digging herself in quite deep. Howie wrapped an arm around her as she buried her face in his shoulder. At least they could do this now when she embarrassed herself. Far better than the blushing and looking away awkwardly.
"I'm going to shut up now."
He laughed again. “Might be for the best.” He whispered in her ear, playfully joking with her. “I’m sure it will be awkward Rosie. Our parents will have just met and then we are going to tell them we are dating. I think that might just very well be the definition of awkward. But, I think it’s the best plan. That way it ensures that we get so see each other, and if they freak out, we can always just pull our wands and demand they accept it. I do t think my folks know we can do magic outside of school. Let’s keep it that way.” He said with a wink. Thier arms interlocked as they began to walk around the lake.
"Do you think there will ever be a day I don't say all the wrong things around you?"
“Probably not.” He teased her again, laughing softly. “So...How should we do it then. Announce it over dinner, sit em down and have a heart to heart. Or, just blurt it out and run away?”
