You need me and I need you, and the paper needs both of us. (Charles Lederer)

Some said time moved fast, others too slow. A couple of people thought it was long and the others, short. But Maverick Castle was not here to contemplate about time, nor did he care about it at the moment. For sure the first year wanted his supper and shower, but today he was not in such a hurry. On the contrary, somehow he felt relatively calm.

The clock may tick-tocked away as relaxed or as swift as it wished while the Gryffindor tried to decide what he ought to write for his first article published in the Headliner, the school's official newspaper. He had all the time in the world, or so he felt.

Most reporters seemed to incline to interviews with the professors or certain students and stories on what had happened at school, such as competitions and dances. But Maverick could not feel these topics vibe with him well. Maybe he could write about motor racings, but would it be allowed? He was not even sure the Muggle-borns would like to read it. Or he could publish an article that sang spring, but this was not specific enough. Yet.

His body was no longer comfortable sitting in the 'good student' position, so Maverick changed. He wanted to cross his legs on top of the desk in front of him, but the stiff-backed chair did no support. Finally, ignoring everything around him, the preteen transformed his working desk into an emergency bed (minus its comfort, there was not even a pillow around). "Sometimes ideas kick in this way," he said inwardly as he stared at the ceiling.

The world is in despair not because there are many bad people, but because there are many good people who do nothing.

It was a Friday, and that meant Ruby had had a tutoring session with Isadora today. It went smoothly, just another part of her routine, and once it ended, she headed straight for the Headliner office. It was the beginning of a new month, and as such, Ruby was looking to finish her Headliner article for May, or at least write for a little while before dinner. She preferred to get her articles in early, both because she was a very punctual person and because she wanted to give the people who worked on her article after her as much time as possible to do what they needed to do.

The office was a nice place to work, as she had her own desk, it was an exclusive environment, and typically while she was in there, there were only one or two people around if any. She didn’t expect others to be there today—after all, it was a Friday afternoon near dinner time at the beginning of the month, who would be worrying about Headliner activities? Her footsteps slowed as she approached the door, expecting to find nothing but an empty room and her neatly organized desk exactly as she had left it.

Upon pushing the door open, she found she was very wrong. While luckily nothing seemed to be destroyed or ridiculously out of place, as with the time two students had broken in to further their own agenda, the office was certainly not as she expected. There was an unfamiliar student in here, lying on one of the desks. The Slytherin raised an eyebrow, cold eyes staring quizzically at the boy. “What are you doing?” This must be Maverick Castle, the newest reporter to join the team. She couldn’t say she was impressed. As a first year writing for the paper for the first time, surely he would be looking to prove himself rather than… whatever this was. The Headliner office was not a place for brand new first year members to take naps.

Most people, especially newcomers, were likely to lose their cool upon caught in the middle of an inappropriate posture. Chances are they would quickly switch to a more polite position, some might stammer, a couple may apologise, others could blurt out a promise that they would never repeat this mistake.

Maverick, though, was not one of these sensible ones. He stole a glance at the speaker, unmistakably talking to him, and saw a dark-haired teenager with no fringe. She looked several years older than he was, and most certainly beat the Gryffindor in terms of seniority among the Hogwarts Headliner staff members. He was, after all, the latest addition to the team.

He did not feel guilty being caught in such position by the other person, though. It was not a matter of being polite or impolite for the tween, but rather a preferred style for thinking and generating ideas. "I'm trying to find an idea of what to write for the next issue," he answered matter-of-factly. And then, gazing his green eyes back to the ceiling, "And I happen to be someone who prefers comfortable position for thinking."

Writhing and twisting, yawning, Maverick forced his body to a sitting position. "Castle," he introduced himself, offering his hand to the fellow reporter. Since they were co-workers anyway, he figured it would be essential for them to at least know each other's name.

Expression blank and cold as ever, she waited expectantly for a response—some explanation for what the kid was doing and why he thought it was appropriate to use the Headliner office in such a manner. It was unprofessional and childish at best, showing little respect for the place and for the other members of the Headliner, like Ruby, who could have walked in on this. To be on the Headliner was a privilege. It was comprised of a select group of less than 30 students who ran every part of the process themselves. The kid should be grateful and pleased to be a part of it, especially as a first year, and he should at least have enough self-respect or pride in his role to sit properly. If he wanted to lie around, that was what the common rooms and dormitories were for, not the office of the Headliner. Then again, he was just a child. She supposed she should have expected as much.

The explanation he gave when prompted was initially unsatisfactory. He felt he had to lie on a desk in order to come up with ideas for what to write about? “Mm,” she intoned noncommittally in place of a proper response. He didn’t even continue looking at her while he spoke. Clearly, he was lacking in both manners and discipline. He did, however, sit up to introduce himself—confirming his identity as Maverick Castle, the newest member of the team, like Ruby had thought—and stretched a hand out, presumably for her to shake. She approached his desk and shook his hand confidently and firmly without doing so too vigorously or with excessive strength, the automatic, well-measured precision in the way she performed the action having arisen from plenty of practice. “Ruby Cazares,” she responded in turn.

She continued making her way through the room, heading to her own desk and sitting down, straight-backed and poised as ever. Her gaze rested on Castle, who would have to rearrange himself and turn around if he wanted to face her still, given her new position in the room. As mildly unimpressed as she was with how the boy had been behaving, though, would it be so bad to entertain this? He wasn’t causing any harm—he was atop his own desk and not damaging or affecting others’ belongings—and she was the only other person in here right now. If she hadn’t walked in, it was possible that no one would have even known. She assumed that he would clean up whatever he had displaced on his desk, if anything, by the time he left, too. After all, he had to be somewhat responsible if he intended to hold the position of reporter. And so what if he was behaving childishly and unprofessionally? He was a child, and this wasn’t quite like a job, even if it was a relatively esteemed role. Such behavior could be tolerated, she supposed. “Well, Castle, has your... creative position yielded any results yet?”

"I guessed it has given me a wise idea," he answered calmly. He may not have got a definite idea on what to write, but this voice had popped up into his mind and breathed an inspiration: Check the previous issues of the Hogwarts Headliners and see if you can derive anything out of them!

For Maverick had a secret, something he had never told anyone at Hogwarts, especially not his fellow school newspaper committee members. His secret was that he had never read any issue of the Hogwarts Headliner, and he guessed it did sound a little awkward and embarrassing now that he worked for them.

If one wondered why he had decided to be a part of the team that created something whose contents he did not have a certain idea about, and even come to the interview and confirmed yes when he was accepted, the answer was a very selfish one: fame, fortune, and prestige - even though the second one did not serve its purpose satisfying enough.

"Say, Cazares," he went on, "do we happen to have the previous Headliner issues here? I'd like to check them out if possible."

They ought to, he thought. They can't have that much previous editions too many to be archived at the headquarter.
