Qrow | #064107 | Qrow's Thoughts | #11a513
The Beithir family estate was situated in the north-east countryside, just over forty miles away from the city of Newcastle. The remnants of what it was built upon once belonged to the family generations ago, with it being used as a summer home back when the Beithirs had lived in Egypt; however, in recent years it had been completely rebuilt and remodelled to serve as a permanent residence for the family of four.
The property was nowhere near the size of Hogwarts, but it was still a sight to behold with its pristine white exterior and intricate detailing. The palace remnants added a touch of sophistication and elegance to the ancient-style architecture, and the gardens were a true masterpiece, with a vast array of colours and textures that were a feast for the eyes. The water features create an atmosphere of tranquilly in the surroundings, with the sound of running water providing a soothing backdrop.
With over 600 acres of land to explore, there were endless possibilities for adventure and relaxation, and as a child, Qrow Beithir often spent their time trying to learn every corner of it.
Right this moment, however, the child was sitting on a garden wall by the floo point that was set up just beyond the gates of the property. Their father refused to open up any of the fireplaces inside the walls of the estate; he hated the idea of uninvited guests (read: his mother) getting in, for none other than Rhys Read.
It had taken ages for them to convince the Gryffindor to ask to come over, and now that they were the redhead was ecstatic.
When they had first gotten off the train on platform 9 and ¾ they had pointed their friend out to their parents as they made their way towards their own family, and the words their mother had said about Rhys still made the Slytherin flush with embarrassment whenever they thought of them.
"That one looks like a keeper, love." Niamh had said gently before guiding them away so they could go home.
Their mother was likely just as excited as they were, and, despite her illness, she had insisted on coming out of her room for Rhys’ stay. In fact, she had been in the kitchen all day upon discovering that Gryffindor had never had lemon drizzle cake.
It was sweet, though; she was seemingly getting better too.
Finally, the green flames of the floo erupted.

That One's A Keeper!
Rhys had been hesitant to accept Qrow's many invitations to their house just outside of Newcastle, mostly because they'd been fearing their father's own reaction. Following the Spring Ball, Sebastian had been informed by Rhun of his middle child's antics and choices they made while away at Hogwarts, and he was not too happy with them as a result. Through many strongly worded owls -not howlers this time... thank gods,- Sebastian informed Rhys of just how disappointed he was with their actions, and that they were in for a rude awakening upon their return home. Each time Qrow had asked, Rhys found some sort of excuse to say no, but still the Slytherin persisted, and Rhys ran out of excuses.
In the end, Amélie convinced her husband to ease up. As one of her sisters had married a woman and now lived peacefully in France, she had difficulty seeing Sebastian's issue with Rhys's 'antics'. So she vouched for them. Despite all of the family drama, Sebastian very much had a soft spot for his wife, and eventually relented.
So, here Rhys was, accompanied by Rhain as they arrived to the Beithir estate in an eruption of green flames. Sebastian hadn't trusted them to go alone, and so Rhain had agreed to 'chaperone'... which meant he would see them safely to the door before going back home and agreeing to meet up with them when the time came for them to leave. Sure enough, Rhain kept his word, waiting until Rhys stepped a good distance away and greeted Qrow before giving a wave and disappearing.
Rhys watched Rhain go before turning back to where Qrow was, a smile overtaking their features as they released a relieved breath. They were here. Finally.
"Hi."

Qrow | #064107 | Qrow's Thoughts | #11a513
Rhys, accompanied by their brother Rhain, arrived at the Beithir estate in an eruption of green flames. The redhead stood from where they were sitting on the low wall in front of the floo point, pushing their glasses up their nose as the Read siblings emerged.
Qrow wasn't fond of their friend's family, an opinion that was born after the pair's trip to Hogsmeade in early March; however, Rhain Read was an exception. The boy always waved and smiled whenever he caught sight of the Slytherin in the halls, and it certainly helped that his sibling seemed to think highly of him. In all honesty, there was something about the boy that was vaguely comforting.
They were eternally grateful that it had been him who had come through the flames and not the other Read brother, or, gods forbid, Rhys father. Their friend didn't talk much about their family, though there were certain small things that the Gryffindor had let slip that didn't paint a pretty picture. Qrow had far too brilliant an imagination to keep their thoughts from jumping from one crazy idea to the next, especially when worry was added into the mix.
But this weekend wasn’t about Qrow’s worries. It was about Rhys finally having a bit of freedom to do as they please and to finally try lemon drizzle cake; the fact that they had never had it, in Qrow's 'professional’ opinion, was absolute sacrilege.
The older Read sibling gave them a wave as the green flames of the floo ignited again. The Gryffindor watched as Rhain disappeared before turning back to where Qrow was, a smile overtaking their features as they released a breath of relief.
"Hi," Rhys said.
The redhead tried desperately to contain their excitement, their fingers tapping excitedly at their sides and face growing into a shit-eating grin.
Qrow tackled their friend, quite literally, into a hug.
"You're here!" The Slytherin exclaimed, picking up their friend with ease and spinning them around in their glee before putting them back on the ground and gripping their shoulders.
"Oh, your stuff. I can have Meep take everything up to my room, and I’ll walk you up to the house!"
At the mention of her name, a small house elf appeared, dressed in a pretty floral pillowcase with the Beithir family crest embroidered into it. She was rather shy-looking, practically hiding behind her massive ears, but she beamed up at Qrow and Rhys nonetheless, greeting the pair with a small curtsey and a question of how she could help her young master and their friend.
Qrow politely asked the creature to take Rhys’ belongings up to their room, and Meep, more than happy to assist, disappeared with a snap of her fingers.
The house wasn't visible from beyond the gates of the estate; the walls surrounding the property were too big to see over from where the children stood, and the gate itself had no gaps to peek through. This was the bit that Qrow was looking forward to the most.
They grabbed the Gryffindors hand, pulling them along towards the gate and then phasing right through the solid matter. They beamed, taking in Rhy’s expression at the view within the property,
"Welcome,"they said with a flourish of their arms
"To the Beithir Estate"

The next thing Rhys knew, they were being tackled into a hug.
"You're here!" The Slytherin exclaimed as they lifted Rhys up and spun them around. Rhys laughed, trying not to get disoriented before Qrow set them down and gripped them by their shoulders. Rhys blushed immensely, smiling shyly up at the Slytherin as the familiar sensation of fluttering washed through their stomach. It was always so good to see Qrow, and simply to be around them...
"Oh, your stuff. I can have Meep take everything up to my room, and I’ll walk you up to the house!" Qrow said, and a minute later a petite house elf appeared, beaming just as shyly as Rhys had been a moment before, and dressed in a pretty pillow case. Qrow requested for her to take care of Rhys's belongings, and the house elf was gone in a snap. Taking the Gryffindor's hand, Qrow dragged them towards the gate they were standing outside, and, similar to the platform to the train, the two phased right through what should have been solid matter.
"Welcome," Qrow said, giving a flourish of their arms. "To the Beithir Estate."
Rhys couldn't help but gape as they took in the view. The sheer amount of land opened vastly before them, and they were inwardly flipping out over the sight of Qrow's house itself. The architecture was what impressed them the most, paired with the plant growth...
Rhys was geeking out, and they hoped it didn't show too much on their face. Immediately, they desired to set off on an exploration, to learn all the corners of the expansive (and, surely, expensive) land. Suddenly, they felt very underdressed and underprepared in the face of the sheer amount of wealth the Beithirs had.. Rhys had suspected as much, even though Qrow didn't really mention it, but if this was their home, Rhys's own house suddenly felt very mediocre in comparison.
Turning back to Qrow, Rhys flushed as they realized they'd been staring slack-jawed for about three minutes.
"So, uh, what's first..?"

Qrow | #064107 | Qrow's Thoughts | #11a513
Rhys very openly gaped as they took in the view. While they had never had actual friends of their own come over, they had seen similar looks on friends of their parents and even family, and it was always their favourite part: watching someone new come in through the gate.
Qrow, of course, had lived here all their life; however, they were not so incompetent as to know that their family was certainly better off than many, and, while their home had never come as a shock to them, it was always heartwarming to see the utter disbelief on other people's faces. Besides, it was mostly for show anyway, and their family only used a select few rooms themselves, with others being specifically for when guests came over or for formal events, and when those happened, the family rooms were locked.
Honestly, while they adored their home and were eternally thankful for everything they had—the gardens were fun, and it was always lovely to explore the grounds in any weather—the house itself could certainly be a bit much at times, and, growing up as an only child, a house so big only made solitude less relaxing and more mind-numbingly boring.
At this very moment, however, watching as Rhys was geeking out, Qrow had never appreciated their home more, and instead of dwelling in their own thoughts, they made a mental note to show Rhys through some of the secret passageways as well as the views of the lake and architecture behind the house.
Rhys turned back to them and flushed as they seemingly realised that they had been staring slack-jawed for about three minutes now. The Slytherin had to hide their laughter behind a cough at the growing red in the Gryffindors cheeks, if only to save them any more embarrassment.
"So, uh, what's first?"
The redhead thought for a few moments. They had been planning out every little detail of this since Rhys agreed, but for some reason—a reason they were currently electing to ignore—they couldn’t remember anything from the mental itinerary they had spent weeks creating.
"My parents." They finally settled on it, the words having left their mouth before they had time to think anything over properly.
"The three of them are dying to meet you."
Qrow led the way up towards the house, navigating the expansive gardens with practised grace and rambling about this and that as they worked their way to the doors.
The pair entered through the main door to the house, which lay way to a cavernous ballroom with a large set of stairs at the back, the railings decorated with hanging floral arrangements. The Slytherin allowed Rhys a few moments of gaping before they ushered them down a long hallway and through an archway into a large open-plan kitchen and family dining room.
Niamh was sitting at the bench on a high stool, zesting lemons; her cane, which Qrow had dutifully painted upon their arrival home, was balanced precariously in between her leg and the cabinet.
Hephaestus was nearby, just in case Niamh needed him, but he was still trying to remain busy by washing potatoes for dinner.
Daemon was less obvious in his hovering, sitting at the table and doing paperwork, though Qrow and definitely their mother knew better than to believe that he was simply working in the kitchen.
Upon their entrance, the three adults looked up, and before anyone could stop her, Niamh Beithir was standing up and making her way over to the two 12-year-olds.
"Hello, Qrowley, dear." She spoke sweetly, her Scottish accent thick as she spoke. Her eyes landed on Rhys, looking over the Gryffindor before pulling the child in for a hug. "Ah, and you must be Rhys! I do hope that you got here alright."
Qrow's fathers had attempted to stop the woman from leaving her chair and were now both standing around her in an attempt to get her back. Daemon tried to take her arm, but all he was met with were his wife's protests and a playful bat on his arm.
Hephaestus got the message and quickly backed off with a snort at the other man's failure.
"Okay, so that's my mam." The red-and-white-haired woman held up her hand in a wave as she went back to her seat. "Niamh."
"That's my dad." Hephaestus grinned at the two children. "Names Hephaestus. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
"And finally, that is my father." Seemingly over his earlier battering, the dark-haired man looked over the Gryffindor with toxic green eyes. "Daemon. Qrowley hasn’t stopped talking about you since they got home."

That One's A Keeper!
"My parents." Qrow said after appearing to think for a moment. "The three of them are dying to meet you." Taking Rhys's hand, the Slytherin took the lead. As one would expect from growing up on the property, they knew the way and effortlessly navigated the estate with grace.
Grace that Rhys, try as they might, had a hard time imitating as they struggled to keep up with Qrow.
Everywhere they turned there seemed to be something new that amazed Rhys, and while Qrow paused to allow them a few moments to gape at the ballroom, there was so much more that Rhys was itching to explore.
However, all thoughts of exploring slipped away as the two entered what looked to be a combination of a kitchen and dining room. A woman with long, red-and-white hair sat on a high stool, and, judging from the citrus smell that overwhelmed Rhys's senses, was handling lemons for.. whatever reason. Nearby, a man with long, viking-esque hair stood rinsing potatoes, glancing frequently over to the woman. Rhys had a singular moment of wondering why before they registered that she must be Qrow's mother, the very one that had, over winter break, fallen ill. A bit aways but still nearby, another man sat filling out a stack of paperwork.
Qrow and Rhys stepped in, and the three adults looked up at the pair of genderqueers. The woman was up in seconds, carefully making her way over to them.
"Hello, Qrowley, dear." She spoke, in a Scottish accent. She then looked to Rhys, and before the Gryffindor could protest, enveloped them in a hug. She smelled strongly of the lemons she'd previously been handling. "Ah, and you must be Rhys! I do hope that you got here alright." Rhys refrained from squirming out of her hold, and when she pulled back they registered that the other two adults had materialized at either side of her, Paperwork Man attempting to take her by the arm while the Viking one gave a snort at his attempts.
"Okay, so that's my mam." Qrow indicated the woman, who gave a wave as she moved back to sit on her stool.
"Niamh."
"That's my dad." The Viking gave both of the students a grin.
"Names Hephaestus. It's a pleasure to finally meet you."
"And finally, that is my father." Paperwork Man turned his attention over to Rhys, and they felt themself shrink under his toxic-green gaze.
"Daemon. Qrowley hasn’t stopped talking about you since they got home." At this, Rhys flushed, casting their Slytherin friend a surprised glance before looking back to the two adults that remained near the two children. Both insanely tall and intimidating, though Daemon definitely scared Rhys more, with his dark hair paired with those green eyes. Taking a small step back, Rhys resisted the urge to hide behind Qrow as they gave a general glance at all of the adults.
"Er.. thanks, they've talked about you lot some, too.." Rhys mumbled, looking down. Realizing Qrow was still holding their hand, they carefully made an attempt to extract it as they gave a sheepish look back to the Slytherin's parents. "Thanks for inviting me,"

At their father's words, Rhys flushed, casting their Slytherin friend a surprised glance before looking back to the two adults that remained near the children and taking a small step back from the Slytherins parents. Qrow took it as the Gryffindor feeling a tad overwhelmed by everything, and they couldn’t particularly blame them for it. They themselves had to stop their own body from betraying their embarrassment at the old man's call out. They were not willing to deal with their mothers' teasing either, however harmless it was, especially if it would result in them losing control of their ability and their hair turning pink.
"Er.. thanks, they've talked about you lot, some, too." Rhys mumbled, looking down. Obviously realising Qrow was still holding their hand, they carefully made a rather fruitless attempt to extract it as they gave a sheepish look back to the Slytherin's parents. "Thanks for inviting me."
Their mother was smirking knowingly from where she was sitting, and the redhead situated her with a glare. They loved their parents, and while they didn’t find them embarrassing, Qrow often found themselves becoming quite the brainless idiot whenever Rhys was involved. Of course, they couldn’t blame the Gryffindor; after all, they had been the one to persuade their friend to stay over.
"Okay, we're going now!" Qrow stated suddenly, their grip tightening on Rhys hand so they couldn’t let go, as the redhead turned to leave.
"We'll be back for dinner!" They called over their shoulder as they pulled the squirming Gryffindor away from the curious gaze of their mother and dad and the likely steel-eyed expression of their father.
Once out of the kitchen, Qrow slowed down a bit in order to let the shorter of the pair keep up as they navigated carefully towards a rather large, floor-length tapestry of the family crest. There were multiple of them around the house, but this one hid something rather specific: a grey wood door with gold detailing. Behind it, a tall spiral staircase led up to a corridor on one of the upper floors—the very same corridor that the redhead's bedroom was on. There were a multitude of secret passageways around the house, and despite living here all their life, the redhead was wholeheartedly convinced that they didn’t even know half of them.
The bedroom was large—easily bigger than the Hogwarts dorm rooms that housed up to four students. The soft glow of the summer sun bore in from a large bay window on the far wall opposite the door, a curtain of vines surrounding its border. A desk was fitted neatly in this nook, with a globe and a plethora of academic books scattered across it. The Slytherin had a telescope stored under it, and on occasions, if they couldn’t sleep at night, they’d sit up and study the stars. Of course, the property had an observatory hidden away further up in one of the house towers, but the door to get up there was both too noisy and too close to their parents room to open so late at night.
Center of the room was the bed, a four-postered, super-king-sized thing with hangings of silk and flowers surrounding it from ceiling to floor; a cloudy grey sofa sat at the foot of the bed facing a fireplace; upon its mantlepiece was a tea set with a frog-shaped teapot and quaint little tadpole cups; it was likely one of their favourite possessions.
A couple of potted plants littered the various tables and dressers in the room—flowers and succulents mostly—but there was also a record player tucked away on one of them and a collection of vinyls beside it.
There was a decorative room divider in the far corner, behind it; a door that led off to a balcony on one wall, and an archway that led into a large walk-in closet on the other—Meep had likely put Rhys belongings in there.
Somewhere in the other room was another door that led to an on-suite bathroom.
"Well, this is my room... Make yourself comfortable."

"Okay, we're going now!" Qrow stated suddenly, grip tightening on Rhys's hand so they couldn’t let go. Rhys gave up, relaxing their hand as the redhead turned to leave. "We'll be back for dinner!" They called over their shoulder as they, thankfully, pulled the squirming Gryffindor away from the curious gaze of their mother and dad and the intimidating, steel-eyed expression of their father.
Once out of the kitchen, Qrow slowed down a bit, likely in order to allow Rhys to keep up as they navigated carefully towards a rather large, floor-length tapestry of the family crest. Beneath it hid a grey wood door with gold detailing. Behind it, a vast spiral staircase led up to a corridor on one of the upper floors—Rhys guessed Qrow's bedroom was likely up the stairs, and they heaved a silent sigh. Gods, they hated stairs. There was a reason they only went to the astronomy tower when it was required for classes.. that, and the fact that they hadn't garnered a viable reason to go there otherwise.
Qrow's bedroom was large—easily bigger than the Hogwarts dorm rooms that housed up to four students. The soft glow of the summer sun bore in from a large bay window on the far wall opposite the door, a curtain of vines surrounding its border. A desk was fitted neatly in this nook, with a globe and a plethora of academic books scattered across it. A couple of potted plants littered the various tables and dressers in the room—flowers and succulents mostly—but there was also a record player tucked away on one of them and a collection of vinyls beside it. In the far corner, there was a decorative room divider, and Rhys wondered what hid behind it. Also, where their stuff had been put
"Well, this is my room... Make yourself comfortable." Qrow said, and Rhys tried to tamper down just how awestruck they were at the Slytherin's room as they took a few hesitant steps forward-- dragging Qrow with them, since the Slytherin refused to let go of their hand.
"Okay.." Rhys took a few minutes to process the room before them before turning to the Slytherin with a sheepish smile. They tilted their head, indicating the area where Qrow's record player and vinyls sat as they tugged the Slytherin with them. "How about showing me some of your records, since you know practically all of mine now?" They asked, raising their brows and biting back a grin.
Rhys had, through the months, shown Qrow just about every record they had with them at Hogwarts, and even wrote down notes of others to either send to Qrow or to bring with them for second year. On second thought...
"Actually, I packed with me a few more records, if that makes any difference." They shrugged, taking Qrow's other hand and swinging it lightly. Gods, the Slytherin's skin was ice-cold.. or maybe Rhys naturally ran hot, they weren't sure. Either way, the Gryffindor was tempted to grab the nearest article of fabric and envelope the redhead in it, if only to warm them up more. Looking down, Rhys bit their lip before adding,
"Though it's mostly more Queen, plus a few more that I don't think I've shown you yet."

"Okay…"
It took the Gryffindor a few minutes to process the new setting before they turned to the Slytherin with a sheepish smile and tilted their head, indicating the area where Qrow's record player and vinyls sat. "How about showing me some of your records, since you know practically all of mine now?" They asked, raising their brows and biting back a grin.
Rhys had, through the months, shown Qrow just about every record they had with them at Hogwarts. The time the pair spent sitting in the room of requirements, music playing in the background as the two sat in each other's company, was quite likely some of the most enjoyable memories Qrow had thus far of Hogwarts.
"Actually, I packed with me a few more records, if that makes any difference." They shrugged, taking Qrow's other hand and swinging it lightly. The Gryffindors' skin was pleasantly warm and comforting. They were looking forward to being able to just lounge around with them. The secrecy of… whatever they were was fun, but the redhead was excited to finally be able to relax.
Looking down, Rhys bit their lip before adding,
"Though it's mostly more Queen, plus a few more that I don't think I've shown you yet."
Qrow smiled at that. So far, Queen was likely their favourite of the artists Rhys had introduced them to.
"I'm not sure how you'll feel about my music. It's quite different from anything you listen to." The Slytherin said with a soft grin before motioning to the closet behind the room divider and mentioning it was likely the place Meep had put their belongings. They wanted Rhys to feel comfortable to explore.
They had quite a few records; only one of them was Muggle, a Queen album the metamorphmagus had searched and searched for in Newcastle the day after arriving home. Their dad had accompanied them into the city, and they had gotten rather lost rather quickly, even having to stop and ask directions a few times in order to even find a record shop.
It was the same album that had been playing the first time they had kissed Rhys Read.
The rest of the vinyls were by artists from the magical world: Spellbound,
The Bent-Winged Snitches, The Hobgoblins, and The Weird Sisters—the last of which was their favourite, despite the band certainly being older than them—nonetheless, the redhead took the record disc out of its sleeve and put it on; Do The Hippogriff was the first song to blare to life, and Qrow carefully pulled Rhys towards their bed to sit, as the lyrics rung out loudly in the background.

"I'm not sure how you'll feel about my music. It's quite different from anything you listen to." The Slytherin said with a soft grin before motioning to the closet behind the room divider and mentioning it was likely the place Meep had put their belongings. Rhys nodded, though that was the last thing on their mind as Qrow took a record disk from out of its sleeve, waited for the music to start, and pulled them over towards their huge bed to sit.
Qrow was right-- their music was a bit different from the music Rhys listened to, but that wasn't a bad thing. As the lyrics rang out, Rhys listened patiently, their foot subconsciously tapping to the beat as they sat next to Qrow and nestled against the taller student. Their mind drifted to the many times they'd previously hung out like this, times where Qrow had dedicated hours to learn and listen to all sorts of Rhys's music (at least, what they had with them at Hogwarts), and their heart warmed to think that they were finally listening to some of Qrow's in return.
As the music played, Rhys also found themself humming a bit of the chorus as it caught in their brain-- even if it was a bit older sounding, it was catchy, and Rhys had a feeling it would get lodged in their mind on a loop. Which would keep them thinking of Qrow long after today, and after this stay in general. They closed their eyes, sighing contentedly as they let the influx of stress of returning home from Hogwarts temporarily wash away. It was sure to return, but this was a weekend stay, so that meant Rhys had around two and a half days until they again had to face their father and their rude awakening.. Half of it was a load of bullshit, but Rhys knew that when they got home, it didn't matter how they approached their punishment- it would be the same regardless.
But that didn't matter- their father's imminent wrath, the fate that surely awaited them back in Wales.. it could be ignored, albeit for only a small period of time. Of course, the first time they'd had a music-listening session like this, there had been that similar notion, but it had only lasted so long before Rhys was reduced to tears. But this time would end differently, even if Rhys was equally likely to cry.. They would just have to save their tears for when they were alone, back in their childhood bedroom, when reality set back in.
Looking back up, Rhys caught Qrow's gaze and they couldn't help but flush slightly in embarrassment. Stamping down the urge to apologize (they were really trying to work on that-- if only for Qrow's sake), Rhys instead gave the Slytherin a smile, nudging them gently.
"I like it. Seems like the sort of music I could dance to at 2 a.m.," They commented lightly, tugging their sleeves over their fists. "Or really, any time."
