Dearest mother and father, dear Kahira,
Maybe news travels fast, but I hope this school owl is the first one to reach you. I'm writing this one in a slightly different location than you might've suspected... Surprise! I'm in Gryffindor. I underlined it so you wouldn't miss it and I can't be blamed when the news reaches you, because sadly I have not made it to Slytherin. And no, it is not one of my pranks. I truly have been Sorted into the red house...
Dad, I know what you're going to say: you're disappointed, angry and shocked and will write the Headmaster to right this atrocious wrong. But please DO NOT do that. This whole situation is embarrassing enough as it is and we all know the hat never makes a mistake... But also, are we SURE there was never a Hawthorne in a different house? We've been here for a while... And mom, don't worry about me, it's just the house and I'm sure I can still find friends in Slytherin - even if I can't enter their common room.
Anyway, to add onto the shock maybe: the dorms are mixed in years. I'm not just with first years, there are some students way older than me. I am staying in the 'Dragon Den' as they call it. It's supposed to be for the 'Daring of Mind' so I figured it was the closest thing to Slytherin I could give you. It also has a dragon which is universal. I bet Kahira would've loved it. It's also supposed to have regular dragon fights and I am looking forward to seeing that happen. I can share stories at Christmas hopefully.
Also, yes, I know this is not what you've hoped for me and expected. But I try to see the bright side: at least the hat apparently believes I'm very brave which would make a great trait in our family as well. Who knows, maybe I'll be the first of many Hawthorne's to end up beyond what we thought was the norm! Probably not though
I hope you'll not think much lesser of me. I know I already miss you. Please give my greetings to grandfather and grandmother, and tell them I have behaved wonderfully except for the Sorting where I ended up in Gryffindor.
