Duel of the Seekers

And again, the brunette watched with satisfaction as her gloved hand darted out, fingers trailling over the cool surface of the snitch as she hugged it close to her chest, a sort of pride filling her. House Gryffindor had been having a rough time of it with their first two matches to boot and in part, Elena sort of blamed herself. They certainly had been going through strenous practice sessions time and time again but when the real thing came, they just seemed to get beat down over and over.
It was demoralizing in it's own way but the Gryffindor refused to let that impact her whatsoever. She had taken to the skies on her Firebolt to exhause some sweat and energy into refining whatever needed working on and she was beginning to see an improvement.
Or perhaps, that was due to having repeated this particular trial over and over again so many times that Elena though if she pushed any harder, she'd be falling off her broom just like last match as she slowed to a manageable hover.
A break was in due order.
The Snitch still wriggling her grasp, she lowered the broom down to the grass setting it to one side before wrestling the golden, pint-sized ball back into it' restraint into the truck before flopping down wiping the beads of sweat off her forehead.
The sun was being particualry unforgiving too with it's rays glaring down upon her as she glanced down at her own thick Quidditch robes. Elena Jangleton would never decide who's ideas it was to design these but as if their standard house robes were not heavy enough, these seemed almost heavier.
The fact that they had to wear them all was a silly restriction if you asked her. It weighed them down, hindered their movement as compared to as if they were allowed to don something more flexible but she wasn't taking the chance of irking the wrath of the Qudditch referees for a wardrobe issue.
In truth, she had her broom to thank too for what she lacked in skill, her broom made up for running her hand down and up it. Her family might not look too kindly on her but they sure did not want a Jangleton being displayed in the public eye on anything lackluster.
She suspected that might have been the primary reason why her father had went to his connections to pull one out for her, not because it was done out of familial love or anything of the sort although the sentiment would have been appreciated to say the least.
Just a few more laps, that was all before Elena called it quits.

The weather may be nice and the sun might be shining, but Maverick Castle was in a totally bad mood. "Stupid Hogwarts and their zero TV!" he kept on screaming in his head ever since he woke up this morning. "And their stupid boarding school setting! What's the harm of letting students enjoy weekends with their family or relatives? Hah! Is this a school or a jail?"
The part-Veela was terribly grumpy for the sole reason of being unable to watch a live race that was supposed to take place at eleven that day. Reading articles about it was not the same, especially when it came to the 1,000th race. And he was supposed to see it, instead of being stuck in this boring place!
Many other things had also gone wrong today. When he got up, Maverick bumped his head. During breakfast, he felt the want for corned chicken toast with scrambled egg, but apparently there was no option for this, at least not this morning. The first year then had to settle himself with smoked fish in whole wheat sandwich and a goblet of orange juice, but while enjoying his breakfast, Maverick accidentally elbowed the goblet.
"Oh, forget about that stupid orange juice!" he had told himself while storming out of the Great Hall. "I'll just brush and change, and then lapping around the Quidditch Pitch. Pretend that I'm taking part in that race, with my fans cheering all around the track."
Apparently, though, someone else was using the venue he was intending to conquer - someone he knew, albeit not personally. This drove the moody preteen off the edge, and he screamed, this time out loud, "Well, well, well. Look who's here! The most stuck up, egotistical Quidditch player Gryffindor has ever had! Look how she's monopolising everything, this pitch for one!"

Elena was jerked out of her bliss, her quiet and her eternal paradise by someone screeching at the top of their lungs and naturally being a Gryffindor, Elena Jangleton did not respond well to stress. If anything, said person or said entity that had been causing said stress would probably be in for a very rough time once the brunette locked onto them as she glanced to see who had lost their marbles this time.
She didn't know this boy, she didn't know what she had done to wrong him but he knew her and not in a good way as she raised an eyebrow wincing at his raised tone.
"Okay, I'll accept stuck-up but egotistical, that's pushing it a bit, don't you think? And you can use the pitch too, you know. You just had to ask.." Her voice trailed off as if she wasn't comprehending she was explaining this to someone who should have grasped the basic knowledge of manners.
It was not her pitch, she had never claimed dominion over it and for some reason, this boy was screaming his head off at her. Maybe he was just ticked that Gryffindor had lost the recent match? It was no secret after all and as their Seeker, Elena had been facing some heat from some of their die-hard fans.
Still, it took all of her control and energy not to match his aggresssion because Elena knew the moment she started doing that, the battle was lost before it was even began. No, she had to be the one with the cooler head here as she gestured to the trunk.
"I'm going to ignore the fact you just screamed totally untrue things at me and offer you the courtesy of flying with me. That is, if you don't get the bright idea of swinging a Bludger at me." She added on eyeing him warily.
Judging from the looks of things, it looked he might want to do exactly that but she couldn't very well go off zipping around while he stood here hurling all sorts of unpleasant words and perhaps, objects if she let him..
Monopising, she filed that word away for later reference, an interesting pick if anything.
Whether he would accept her offer or not still hung in the air, she half-expecteed him to take it and throw it back in her face as she waited, a tad bit impatient too that this nusiance had shown just as she had been just about to finish up her practice runs.
Seriously, she hadn't even hurt as much as an fly and suddenly in his eyes, Elena Jangleton was some sort of villian, someone that needed to be put down. Well, that would take more than what he probably thought, she said to herself smiling slightly.
"Well? The pitch's open for two unless you fancy standing here shouting all sorts of unpleasant things and then I'd have to explain to the nursee how you wound up with a Bludger to the face and I'm sure none of us want that."
In hindsight, it is what she wanted if he kept on rambling like he was now, her fingers tensing a bit.
Was it too much to ask for one calm day, one peaceful venture out into the outside?

At the older student's claim that she was not egotistical, Maverick lost it and laughed. But as one could only expect in such situation, he laughed not because he genuinely thought it was funny, and the laughter of his tone said it all: it was one mocking laughter, and the preteen made it all even more clearer by unconvincingly pretending to almost losing his balance, as if he was about to roll on the grass.
"Not egotistical! Hah!" he shouted in between his laughter. "Such fitting description for someone who has been hogging the position of Gryffindor seeker since the first semester in 2021! You think you're the only one who wants to be in that position? Oh, of course you do! And the reason? Because you don't consider anyone's feelings but yours! You and yourself only! That's the quality of an egotistical person, for your information!" His tone was now full of anger, it had no longer any trace of the mocking laugh which had earlier been there.
When the fifth year mentioned about the possibility of bludgering each other (or so Maverick perceived it), he smirked. "Good idea. Thanks for the invitation," he said to himself inwardly. Mounting his Firebolt, the eleven-year-old gave a kick and soared to the sky.

Elena had to make sure she wasn't dreaming. Sure, she had encounted a bunch of odd situations in her life but this, she thought to herself took the place of number one. "I can't believe the hogwash I'm hearing erupt from your mouth." She said incredoulsy as his words continued to assualt her over and over again. If she was reading this correctly, presumably, this boy for whatever reason known to Merlin was merely anatgonized at the fact that she held the position of Gryffindor Seeker and granted, she knew their house had an rough season, it was rather unfair to divert all of that blame onto a singular individual. They were a team after all and a team rose or fell together.
"I hate to be blunt here but feelings have nothing to do with it. It's a matter of whether you can hold your own on a broom although frankly, given the way you've been throwing a tantrum, perhap's it's a good thing you didn't make the team."
The urge to hex him into silence was already tempting but Elena sensed that was he wanted. He wanted a reaction from her, some sort of outburts from the girl and the brunette absolutely was not going to give him that satisfaction no matter how much he pressed her.
Seriously, had their team fallen so low that even their own house-mates were vying to rise up against them and oust them from their position. "So much for house pride and all that." She muttered to herself swinging one leg over her broom.
He had a Firebolt much like her own, they were matched in that regardless as she rose to the sky with a steady, balanced gait knowing that given his current reaction towards her, the idea of him sending her a few Bludgers to make friends with was a very likely reality after all.
A thing to watch out for and make note of.
"Right then, you want to prove yourself, right? You want to justify your claim that you can be the picture-perfect Seeker that Gryffindor needs."
Oh yes, she was laying on the sarcasm thick. Elena did not appreciate being called the multiude of the names he had called her for the simple sin of flying around in relative peace and quiet.
"Heck, I'll even give you the advantage. I'll play by your rules. Give us a challenge, a scenario and let's see if you have what it takes to make the cut."
She was sure he would think of something stupidly unfair perhaps, something so insane perhap but it was a better alternative than trying to think what he would look like once her wand was done with him as she hovered waiting for him.
For anything.

Duel of the Seekers

A smile decorated Maverick's attractive face as he settled his beloved, trusted Firebolt level with hers. "You're mistaken there, my good woman," he purred, the mocking tone back in his voice. "I never want to prove myself as an invincible Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, or even to prove myself better than you. I just want you to step down and give other people a chance to take over the role. Pity them, they've been waiting for the chance for goodness knows how long. But then again, I don't think an egotistical human being wants or knows how to share or to give."
The part-Veela zigzagged slightly, as if he were on a motorcycle and preparing its tyres to warm up perfectly before a race commenced. "If you want to have a competition that's highly related to the position of a Seeker, I don't think it's really doable without a Golden Snitch," he said matter-of-factly, voice free of mock or challenge. "But if any kind of as-long-as-we're-on-brooms competition is fine with you, we definitely can do many things. The broom equivalent of Motocross? Fine with me. SBK, broom version? I'm also okay with that. Depends on you, really." And there was that smile again, the charming smile that may be hiding something more ambitious.
