It was a Sunday and Colin slipped out of the common room early. He snagged a few things from the side board that Professor Jensen always stocked, some bread and cheese and a couple bottles of water. He felt shaky as he prepared for the day's journey. The Sun was hardly up when he slipped out of Slytherin house up into the quiet corridors above and out into the grounds of the castle. He knew he was going to break down soon, so he wrapped himself in his old plaid great kilt and ran as fast as he could.

He charged through the entry hall, and already his tears were falling! His heart was pounding and his head was already hurting. Colin ran faster, his bare feet carrying him unerringly out into the dim, drizzly, misty morning. He mewled and whimpered as he ran. His feet pounded on the grass and his hair and kilts bounced behind him. His heart felt so very heavy and his tears were hot in his eyes.

Colin ran faster and faster! His legs began to burn, and he cried out. He wiped his eyes, but the tears would not stop. He roared for the pain in his chest and in his legs, but still he ran --- up into the high meadows far above the castle. At last he came towards the familiar place. The stone outcropping. The place where Colin loved to go and howl. The place he loved to sit and think and meditate. He crouched on the stone seat. The wind was chilly and the dark clouds spat occasional showers of rain and drizzle. It was the place he needed to be to day.

Thirty April.

Colin's birthday.

Liam's birthday.

He didn't sleep well last night. He knew he didn't want to be anywhere near anyone else today. He wanted to be as far away from school as possible. He didn't want to see anyone, didn't want to talk to anyone. How could he? He knew that Kim and Bailey --- bless their hearts --- would have probably set up a whole birthday party for him. And if not them, then probably the Sneks would have.

Colin moaned. He collapsed onto his side and cried. He curled up into a ball and whimpered, his warm tears mixing with chilled raindrops on the cold stone. He wished today were a wolfing day. He would break out of the place where he was kept and would run into the forbidden forest. There he would run until he was exhausted or found something to fight.

His body shivered and shuddered with sobbing cries. His hands stretched out towards hands that weren't there any more. His eyes sought the face that was gone from his world. "Where are you?" he cried out.

No voice answered.

No face was seen.

No hand stretched towards his.

Colin cried and he fingers clutched at the hard stone. His fingernails broke. He shut his eyes against the darkness of the day, and saw nothing but darkness. His breath became ragged. His heart broke into pieces inside his chest. Rain fell. The water washed his tears into the wild flowers below the stone seat. "Liam, why did you leave meeee! Why did you have to die?"

Colin fell into darkness.

Mellani was taking a morning stroll in the garden when she noticed a boy running like his life depended on it. One closer look, and she knew it was Colin, the one who was supposed to be happily celebrating his birthday today. He seemed to be crying, and being the kind person she was, Mellani couldn't help going after him.

As Mellani went after him, trying to be quiet, she noticed that he stopped at a stone, far away from Hogwarts, and sat there, screaming and crying. Mellani looked away. She shouldn't be here. She should leave before he see her. But she couldn't help staying there, wanting to do something, anything to make the boy feel better.

She went closer to him, and that was when he fell. In a moment of panic, Mellani caught him, keeping his head from making contact with the ground. "Colin! Colin hey... Shh, everything will be okay," she said, slowly comforting him. It occurred to her that she could not say that, not without knowing the facts and the reason to why Colin was crying, but there was no harm in trying to comfort him, and hoping that it worked. She shouldn't be here. Colin would probably hate her for following him, but she couldn't help it. She hated seeing someone crying and not being able to help them.

Colin wandered through the darkness. Alone. There should have been another. His other. It was like a dark forest. Tall slender shapes rose up all about and a soft chittering could be heard in the thin air. The breeze seemed almost gentle though its bitter taste and biting cold sapped all strength. This was no forest that Colin had ever wandered in the waking world. No, this was a place devoid of life and devoid of the vitality of the woodlands.

Shades and shadows rose up, shifted, fell away into darkness. Ever aware of the living intruder. Dark stars gave wan light here and Colin lost his way. Things, some merely uncaring, others truly malevolent, bode their time. Ever watching, always waiting. They knew.

Colin knew.

The darkness was growing.

And the other was no longer there. Colin searched, not knowing if he had been in this place before or not. And still the Things waited. Hungry. And patient. They knew. It would not do to bring in the harvest unripe. Despair had not grown strong enough. Hatred was as yet untested. No, the Things could bide. As they had done before. There had been others like this one. Yes. Some had fallen quickly. A few had escaped entirely. This one had the Mark, like a star on his forehead, and was worth waiting for.

Colin felt weak. He collapsed amid the shifting shadows that were not trees. The soft chittering of Things swoll slightly, before subsiding again. Colin knew. They were waiting, as was he. He wished to follow his other. His Liam. His other half. He wished he could lie here, naked on the black earth under dark stars and let himself go. What was there in the place he wanted to leave?

Nothing, said a voice. It was gentle, almost inviting. You know this. The hatred of your brothers. The mistrust of your mother. Even the girl finds you weird. Colin wept. You are despised and alone. Colin felt his heart falter. It was true. A boy like him, afflicted, cursed. Your family is ruined. Another cursed to compound the family's sorrow.

Almost Colin felt like letting go. To be consumed by despair. Yet the last prayer of his inner heart must have been heard. A warmth arose in his torn and battered heart. Words from outside counteracted the speech of the shadows and the chittering of the Things surrounding him. He could distinguish no words, but the sound comforted him. Hands touched his body. Unfamiliar, but safe. Unlike the scrabbling claws of the Things, these would do no harm. They cradled him, supported him, restored him.

As if through deep water, Colin saw a brightness within the gloom. The Things scattered and withdrew. Dark stars faded and a gentle rain fell upon Colin's face. Colin drew a ragged breath and his body relaxed. Words arose in his mind: the Fearless bring comfort to the Afflicted. His breath steadied.

Colin curled up and slept in the rain.
