• SPECTATOR THREAD FOR: Caoimhe & Irina's Unofficial Duel •
┏ ┓-----I t was the first day back at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since the well deserved Easter Break, and already it was turning out to be an interesting last term.
Caoimhe Kyle was to engage in her first duel of the year, or at least the first one he had heard of. She was the kind of person to practise in secret, and he didn’t put it past her to continue the streak of secrecy he had discovered she was predisposed to. His mother had known the name, from her time in the Wizengamot, and it didn’t take much prompting at all before she could recall the impression that was left on her.
Avery himself didn’t know what to think. Surely he was supposed to resent her for her history, but the added twist only seemed to exacerbate her complex allure. This was the first he had set his dark pools upon her since he had found out what some in his circles would deem to be ‘secrets’, and so he was watching her in a new light as she doffed her cardigan and cast a look back towards the seats for something; how embarrassing if she had forgotten something.
It was the first day back at school, at least for him and many other students, and the room was alive with people sharing stories and gossip of their time away, or with their families. Avery had gossip of his own, but he liked to hang onto those threads, until they were useful. He, of course, had come here to practice. He spent most of his free time here, for good reason too. Dedication was how he had excelled at most things; with little natural talent to fire up the cylinders; he was only left with the option to actually try. Duelling came slightly easier to him, but he still had to work for it. As he took his seat, preparing himself for a decent break, he wondered if Caoimhe was the same. The day he had first encountered her, she was practising by the lake and she seemed to have been rather annoyed to have been discovered; so he doubted she had some kind of savant-like wandplay in her blood, which he doubly doubted with what he had learned.
This was going to be an interesting display indeed. She had identified herself as competition, now, he would see for himself. The other girl seemed sweet enough, but Avery didn’t know her all that much, though he would silently hope she would be good enough to draw the venom from the viper opposite.┗ ┛ Mentioning @Caoimhe Kyle, @Irina Shevel & @Duvessa Ember

[quote] It is the first day back since the amazing Easter Break. It was just what the doctor ordered! I had heard about a Slytherin duel that is to be going on and I decided to come investigate. A girl named Irina is going against Caiomhe in an unofficial duel. Should be fun to watch. Caoimhe and I are not to tight but you know what they say! Keep your friends close and your enemys closer. I hear the soft talking of those surrounding me and I smile. I have the greatest stories about my time at home! My little sister Esmeralda had me running all over London do do activity's! I love her I really do. One week really was not enough. I missed my family!
I scan the seating and see that most of the chairs are taken. I see a dark haired and pale guy sitting alone. He has light freckles and dark eyes. Damn he is rather attractive. Why not sit by him? I walk over to the boy and smile warmly. I have decided not to do my little badass girl act.
"Hello! I am Opal, would it be okay if I sit here?" I ask sweetly. You never know when you could make a friend, or even better, an attractive friend. I flip my hair over my shoulders because it is in my face. How annoying!

Mellani hadn't had much to do lately. So, when she heard of a duel taking place, she decided to spectate it because, why not? She wanted to learn dueling too. Not too long ago, she'd been attacked by magic and hadn't been able to defend herself. And she had ended up in detention. She wasn't in a good mood and she was grasping at any distraction that she could get to get away from her thoughts.
Little did she know that Opal was going to be there too. When she entered and saw Opal there, she pretty much just went in the opposite direction and sat alone. She was probably going to leave this place. She didn't want to be in the same room as Opal. Not now. Not when she couldn't even deal with her own damned life.
She held her head in her hands, pulling up her hood. It wasn't cold. But she wore it anyways. It was like something that made her feel a bit less insecure of herself. She looked at the people in the duel wondering if just looking could possibly help her. Hopefully, it would. Because Mellani wasn't getting attacked again. And she had to know how to defend herself. So she looked at the participants and sighed, wishing Opal wasn't in the room.

After nearly a year on the sidelines of the broom racing team, Alora had been itching for something. Flight was truly where her passion lay, but duelling had certainly caught her attention. Something she considered later in her years. It wasn't something she would have raised as a first year. Even with balanced duels, she wanted to know more, to expand her knowledge. She wanted magic to be more natural coming to her. For now, she was still processing, still assimilating. It was coming to her more naturally, but it still wasn't innate as it was for some of her peers. Her first reaction wasn't to whip out her wand without thinking. She had to actively do so, and she did. Some day, she hoped it would be much more natural. Until then, she'd fake it until she made it.
With a few friends unofficially duelling, she wasn't going to miss that for the world. She noted a few more friends nearby. "Opal!" she called, sauntering closer, not even realizing her partner in crime might even be flirting. At eleven, love was the last thing on her mind, and boys might as well be mange-infested cootie having creatures as far as she was concerned. There were a few exceptions she appreciated for their friendship. "Mell," she added, sitting down near her friends, giving a nod to the boy that was nearby. She recognized him.
"Have I missed anything?" she asked, hoping it wasn't the case. It had taken her a moment to get her new things dropped off. Easter had brought on candy and new hand-me-downs from her sisters. She had been spoiled, and thanks to her writing to Nadia, lots of greys and greens had been added to her wardrobe. Instead of the oversized sweater she'd stolen from her brother at Christmas, she had a better-fitting one to go with her grey school-issued skirt lending her a casual look.

WHO WATCHES THE W A T C H M E N ?CAOIMHE HAD CASUALLY MENTIONED AN UNOFFICIAL DUEL, and in typical girl code, Harlan wasn't sure if he had actually had an invitation and if his vipress wanted him to be there. Nevertheless, he had decided at the last minute that he would attend and silently cheer her on from the sidelines. Nothing was concrete between the two of them but there was something that kept pulling Harlan into her orbit, a gravitational pull that both felt inviting and ominous. Was Caoimhe actually dangerous? Only time would tell and would it all be worth it? Well, time would tell that story too.
Finding himself squeezing through the ever growing sea of verdant and silver, Harlan hadn't quite exactly noticed anyone in his direct line of sight and so he found his way into one of the corners while the others intermingled with one another. His own garb had bold stripes of green, silver, and white as to support Caoimhe in his own little subtle way. Joke would be on him when there would be another Gryffindor fighting against Caoimhe herself.
" A lot of snakes interested in this fight, any one of you know why? He asked the question to no one in particular, letting his question linger to see if one of the other students had been privy to that information.
Harlan would make himself comfortable and watch as the others talked amongst themselves, using this to glean what he could of the other students before the duel actually began. On occasion, he would try to catch the eye of Caoimhe but nothing obvious enough to break her concentration.

───── It was Lilliana’s first day back at Hogwarts after Easter Break. She had heard that a duel would commence soon, Caiomhe Kyle would be one of the participants, the other Irina Shevel, a Gryffindor first year who she hadn't yet met. She had also found out that Duvessa would be moderating the duel. It was supposedly her friends Cai’s first duel, along with Essa’s first time modding. The blond-haired Slytherin had shown up in high spirits, a grin set on her face. If anyone were to inquire about her presence, she would merely state she was there to show support for her two friends, which was partially true, but she knew how interesting duels turned out often, and that was the main nudge that brought her there.
Occasionally glancing at the two duellists, Lilliana scanned the crowd for any familiar faces. She recognized a couple of people from her house, mostly first years, so far. She saw Alora and gave a slight wave to them. Lilliana had remembered their previous encounter in the study room, as well as seeing her during the end of the whole Spin the Bottle thing that was set up -- wasn't she the one who pelted them with dungbombs? Probably. The first year had to admit, she found the stunt Alora had pulled quite amusing, even if technically she could be identified as one of the ‘victims’.
She saw another girl she recognized from the Spin the Bottle game, a pretty brunette, they had sat next to Lilliana during the event, but she had never caught the other girl’s name... She had also heard that they had gotten into a fight with a muggle-born, Opal, in the Library! Lilliana wasn't sure whether the rumors were true or not, half the time the things people gossiped about in Hogwarts weren't real at all... Besides, how could a fight take place in a Library? Of all places! Now that would have been a sight to see!
Speaking of Opal... It wasn't long before Lilliana spotted them as well, standing next to a vaguely familiar boy, she doubted she had interacted with them yet, but she had heard of them, somewhere... Lilliana made her way closer to the two of them, making it just at the time when Opal tossed her hair over her shoulders very flirtatiously. That made Lilliana raise an eyebrow, and a light snort escaped the girl. She looked at the person standing next to Opal for a few seconds before it clicked. Cai had mentioned them earlier! Leveret. Avery Leveret, wasn't it? It didn't take long for the scene to be rushing back to her -- yes.
It was the harshest of weather when Caiomhe, Duvessa, and Lills made their way outside to discuss certain topics. Avery’s name had come up a couple times, and from what Cai had described... Well, from what she had heard, they had an interesting personality, to say the least. Which brought her back to the present. Lilliana crossed her arms casually, “I’m Lilliana, by the way,” The first year said, before adding, “I’m Caiomhe’s friend,” She said, narrowing her eyes slightly. Not doing the best job at being inconspicuous.
She quickly diverted her attention towards Opal, “Weren’t you that girl who set up the Spin the Bottle thing? You seemed quite desperate for a snog,” Lilliana smirked slightly at the memory, glancing back and forth between Opal and Avery, looking for any initial reactions. Not to mention the fact that she was openly flirting with a pure-blood, being a muggle-born and all. Though, Lilliana had to admit, Opal had some nerve.

• SPECTATOR THREAD FOR: Caoimhe & Irina's Unofficial Duel
┏ ┓-----T he room was beginning to fill with people, and he being ever watchful minded each and every one of them with a cursory gaze that tried to place people as friends or as foes.
It was mostly Slytherin students that he had clocked, nodding curtly to each of them in silent greeting if he knew them well enough. Avery was always distant, and cold, as though he was always thinking about something critical and solving puzzles in his mind palace. It earned him a reputation of being both efficient and effective, and up-tight. In truth, this was his moment of respite. He would often come here to practice his own wandwork to cool off, or to watch others with a critical eye in an attempt to better his own strategies.
There were little stakes to this duel, but seemingly the well-known vipress had attracted a plentiful crowd. She was a twisted enigma, to him; and now he knew they shared more than a desire to be great, though what the other spectators thought was another thing he considered. Many were of their own house, friends undoubtedly; and then there was that Gryffindor boy he had seen around. Peculiar that he had come in the colours of Slytherin, and even more peculiar that he had seemed to lean in and out of view as though to gain some kind of attention. Avery quickly determined that it was an attempt at Caoimhe’s attention, and he couldn’t help but smirk. He didn’t know the boy but he immediately knew she would eat him whole, but he supposed that made him brave.
“There is a snake in the fight, one worth watching too.” Avery replied to Harlan’s question, with his signature smirk. He had sussed him already, but confirmation couldn’t hurt; and besides perhaps if her friends heard the compliment it could filter back to her. He couldn’t well add to that as a familiar girl approached him, introduced herself and asked to sit next to him.
“Oh uh- Hello Opal. Leveret, Avery Leveret. - Yes I suppose you can.” He offered in reply, carefully, with a laboured smile as he moved his purposefully placed bag from the seat. It had served as a natural barrier, a sign of his reservedness, but she had been bold enough to ask.
She flicked her hair dramatically and he simply raised an eyebrow, and turned his attention back to the duel. Avery wasn’t the most social creature, not even with people to whom he shared a house; often being seen in fleeting moments travelling through the common room to his dorm, on rare occasions; sat alone in the library. He didn’t seem to have close acquaintances, but little did they know that this was mostly by choice. People were irksome, especially kids. He was one, but most of his socialisation growing up was with older students or people at formal events, so he had adopted an older mentality fairly quickly; and an impatience for clamouring.
Opal seemed quite forward, and that put his back up. Of course that was supported when Lilliana walked over and introduced herself with a cold poise that appeared quite threatening; though not to him. His smirk only grew, firstly at her declaration of being Caoimhe’s friend and then to her jab at Opal. Avery liked being correct, but rarely did it culminate in such a dramatic fashion. His brow peaked high into his forehead as he hummed at Lilliana’s revelation.
“Spin the bottle? – Ew. I’d never.” He said with playful disgust, he was 11 and that stuff just didn’t appeal to him. Though what did was this defensiveness that Lilliana had displayed on Caoimhe’s behalf, probably. The expression he had sent to Lilliana was sign enough that there was nothing to worry about here, as he nodded to her. “Lilliana.” He greeted. “I’m Leveret. Avery Leveret. – I’m, uh, a friend of Caoimhe too!” He said, though his ambiguity was because he was uncertain if he could claim that status; he figured it sounded better than; ‘an interested party sussing out the competition’. If Lilliana elected to press him on it, he could always fall back to mystery and leave her with more questions than answers.┗ ┛

Colin padded soundlessly into the duelling hall. He'd heard that the duelling club he was in would have a Slytherin vs Gryffindork showdown. Excellent. He hadn't duelled since last fall, against Kim. That was fun! He expected no less today. A lot of the kids in the club were first or second years, so he wasn't expecting to see slashed and maimed bodies thrown around the place, but still, he knew enough spells in first year to really hurt an opponent.
He was not at all disappointed to see so many Sneks in attendance! Good, good! He remembered back to June's start of term welcome for all the new first years. He was so happy to see that they were here cheering for their house! And, well, if any of the lion cublets got too rowdy, they could easily be dealt with! In fact, most of the kids watching the duel were fellow Sneks.
Colin smirked. Apart from Avery --- a boy he very much wanted to get to know better --- the usual suspects were in attendance. Alora, the Princess of Pranks; Lilliana, the gorgeous and utterly snoggable half Veela; Opal, the sad girl who shared Colin's sadness; and Mells, the quiet girl. She seemed very nice to Colin. One boy alone, dressed in silver and green, he didn't recognise. Colin was pretty sure he wasn't even a Snek!
He raised one eyebrow. There's only one reason a boy who wasn't a Slytherin would wear silver and green to a Slytherin vs Gryffindork duel. Colin smiled. He liked the boy's showing. That reason must be that he fancied one of the Sneks! But was she someone here already? Or was she delayed? Or --- could it be he fancied Cai, the duellist!? Interesting.
After scanning the crowd, Colin decided to sit behind the others. He stepped up onto the seat and settled into a comfortable crouch. He could tell there was drama already. Mells looked like a Jedi observing quietly and Opal looked like she wanted to jump on Avery and snog him! He smirked. He'd kissed her thrice already --- two proper snogs and one kiss of life!
Colin promptly ignored the drama in the stands once Embers announced the duel was to begin. Colin's gaze fell first on the Gryffindork. Colin smiled. She had the look of trouble about her! Her hair was a mess and her knees had plenty of scrapes. If he were a Gryff, she seemed like she'd be an ideal friend to run around and play with or explore the castle! On the piste, she seemed quite confident --- not calm confident like Regina, but exuberant confident like Colin!
On the other hand, Cai seemed very focused on the lion. Good. Exuberance was a good thing, but Colin had been learning that, in duelling, focus was better. He knew he'd have to learn to balance his two natures --- the wild wolf boy and the determined wizard boy. She had poise and self control, much like Clair. He respected that in her. He wondered what else might lie beneath the surface!
Colin smirked. He hoped it might be a wicked opening defense and thumping coup de grace!

A beautiful blonde girl with blue eyes walks up to me looking rather bitchy. She introduces herself as Lilliana and I recognize her from the spin the bottle game. This girl makes it clear she is one of the duelers friends and I smirk. This girl seems a bit jealous.
Avery greets Lilliana and I decide to give up flirting with him. He is a pureblood after all, he would likely never like me. Oh well, I have several friends anyways.
"Sweetie I may have set it up but YOU still played. Seems YOU were a bit desperate for a snog. Besides I don't need a stupid game to get a guy to kiss me. I can't say the same about you can I?" I shoot back. I give her a poisonous smile and walk away. I spot Colin and grin. That boy is the best. He had once saved my life.
I walk over to Colin and plop right down next to him. I quickly give him a peck on his cheek to show my affection and train my eyes on the duel in front of me. "Hello Colin. That damn girl, Lilliana, was very pissy with me for some reason. Probably because of my blood status. I may be a mudblood but I am still the same as everybody else!" I vent. I look back at Colin and grin.
"Sorry I am just a bit wound up. I could have picked that bitch apart like a vulture but I don't fancy another detention at all!" I add sheepishly.

"Colin!" She greeted happily, glad her friend had made it to the duel. It might not have been official, but it was exciting nonetheless. Even in this capacity, Alora wasn't ready to participate, but it offered her insight for future reference. Seeing styles of classmates, judging potential adversaries. "Come sit!"
Alora had waved at Lilliana when she motioned her in greeting, and had smiled as the blonde drew closer. She wasn't sure why the girl's presence always made her a bit dumb on the side, but she didn't question it. There was something light and fun about the young woman she appreciated and she wasn't going to let herself overthink it when the foley of youth was so appealing! Too soon the sentiment shifted as catty retorts were being made.
I should have brought a dungbomb... Alora thought bitterly to herself, even more so as memories of the infamous night returned. A glimmer of hope shown as Leveret spoke however. Finally, someone with some sense.
"Finally, someone with a few neurons firing," she drawled in response to Avery's comment about not participating. Even though newly turned 12, she still had no interest in such things. "Let's all remember you all ended up needing showers the same. Or do we need remembering there lovelies?" Alora grinned. She wasn't taking the credit but she wasn't disproving it either.
"Perhaps we should keep the banter for after Cai's victory," she grinned, looking over to her friend up with her wand poised. "It's the only battle I came to spectate anyways."
