Trunk? Check. Backpack? Check. Notepad, quills and inkpot? Check, check, check. Reluctantly, Irene put her list down, and settled into the cushioned seats. She'd chosen an empty car for a reason, despite already knowing a few other first years. It was quieter, and she wanted to get organized before talking to anyone. And, yes, she had everything on the list, but she still felt like she was missing something. She checked her remembrall for the fourteenth time that day, but it remained stubbornly empty. Irene sighed. It was almost like she wanted to have forgotten something, so she could hurry back home and stay there forever.
But she was being silly. After all, Hogwarts was her dream come true. It was the school her parents had gone to (one a Ravenclaw, the other a Hufflepuff), and where her brother would go too! Well, that might not be entirely true. For a while, her family had suspected that Nicky was a squib, but it was never a sure thing. For one, he was only eight. Surely, most people had preformed their first instance of magic later than that. Didn't Irene's second cousin get theirs when they were 10? But even if he was, the idea didn't seem to bother little Nicky. Ever since he was young, he had talked about wanting to work at his Pa's bakery. Irene hoped this sentiment lasted, for she would hate for her brother's hopes to get crushed.
Speaking of being hopes, Irene's were unreasonably high as well as dangerously low. She'd heard tales of Hogwarts from her parents and family all throughout her life. A school full of wonder, magic portraits and secret passages, where you learned magic spells and potions. Really, it was too good to be true. But Irene didn't want to leave her safe nest of friends from Newport, where she felt like she belonged. Scotland is a long way from Wales, and even owls couldn't cover that distance very fast. How long would it be until she saw her Dad and Pa again? Would she go back for winter? Should she?
Her dads said it was her choice, but Irene's indecisiveness took over. She said she would owl, and it was the only thing left on her checklist. Staring down at it, she decided to try to take her mind off things. Crossword, the Daily Prophet, or chess? There was only Irene in the compartment, so no chess, but she took out the set anyway. Sometimes, she liked to just admire the pieces. It was a nice, made of bronze (for black) and marble (for white). After a moment of pause, Irene also pulled out her crossword. There was no point in a newspaper that would become outdated in a few hours, anyway.

Somehow, despite all of the effort her Nana put in to be early for the train, Selena managed to be late. It started with her alarm being set incorrectly. Thirty minutes after it was supposed to ring the first time, her grandmother came in and woke her up. Five minutes after that, she was back asleep again. Ten minutes later, her grandmother was back again, this time more frustrated. Selena got out of bed and got herself ready in the way she wished but Nana decreed that her outfit choice was not proper enough for the first day at a new school and that "if she wanted to put her best foot forward, she had to dress smartly." Selena's second choice of a blouse and skirt combo was, thankfully, considered acceptable. She tied her hair up with a ribbon before descending the stairs for breakfast.
By the time she made it to the station, Selena was over an hour behind the intended schedule which caused Nana a great deal of anxiety. "Do you have your toothbrush, my dear?" She asked. She had already asked multiple times about various books, underwear, socks, shoes, and vitamins. You name it and Selena probably had it in her bag. At this rate she probably would be bringing a pig to Hogwarts for good measure.
Once this train came, she would be on her own recognizance. Free at last from the endless badgering! Perhaps she would finally be allowed to go out at night without putting on a coat first. There wouldn't be any garden parties filled with stuffy old guests who asked her the same three questions in a never-ending loop, either. It was safe to say Selena wouldn't miss those parts of her grandmother. She would miss Nana though, for her infinite care and support. There would probably not be anyone like that at Hogwarts. She would go home for the holidays, almost certainly. Possibly not for the whole summer but the holidays were not to be missed.
At Hogwarts, she would finally have friends her own age. Nick and James were good company but they always looked down on her because she was eleven and they were both thirteen. It was a pretty great deal. She got freedom, new friends, not to mention the wide world of magic right at her fingertips. Out of the subjects, Charms was the one she predicted to be her favorite. She had briefly paged through A Book of Spells after she had bought it and much of the contents appealed to her.
Selena wrestled free from her grandmother's embrace and set her sights on the train. It was truly one of the most picturesque she had seen, much more than the filthy tube. She took a deep breath before walking up to the train and getting on. With each step she took, another adrenaline filled her body. The professor hadn't scammed her. Magic was real...
It was not yet the time for daydreaming. Selena scanned her surroundings. First, she had to find somewhere to sit. That was accomplished with ease as the young witch opened the door to find a mainly empty compartment with the exception of one girl around her age.
What should she do? Introduce herself? What if the girl didn't want to be approached? The thoughts rolled around in Selena's brain like marbles. Be brave, Selena. She reminded herself as she sucked the fear down.
"Hello. May I sit here?" The tone that came out of her mouth was rather stiff but it was not terrible.

The door of Irene's compartment slid open, startling her a bit. She was almost done her crossword, but she was stuck on the second last one. The clue was: OOC: tell me something I can put here that your character will know and so far, she was completely stumped. Her Pa, a great wiz at crosswords, would probably be teasing her over it if he were here now. If only... But no, he wasn't here and that wouldn't change any time soon. With a sigh, she turned to whoever opened the door, and tried to stop thinking about home.
The "whoever" was a girl, probably Irene's age, with dark brown hair and eyes. She was wearing a plaid skirt, and a beige top that fit her well. Irene noticed that the girl was maybe a bit nervous, and that was something she could for sure relate to. The young witch had just entered the compartment, and was standing at the door. After a moment, she said:
"Hello. May I sit here?"
"Yeah, yeah, of course you can," Irene said, hurrying to make room on the other side. "Sorry, I was just reorganizing my stuff." She swiped all her stuff into her arms and deposited it in the corner. After a second, she thought of the crossword and added, "You any good at crosswords?"
