Closed The first class of the year: Transfiguration

I walked into the classroom just on time. Professor Aarden told us to sit down in whichever seat we want. I looked around and found Dakota sitting in the back. I wanted to ask her where she was for breakfast, but who knows? Maybe it’s a personal topic. I’m not really one to worry anyways so I go and sit next to her. I don’t really know what to say. I mean, we only met yesterday and I’m not very good at making new friends. Just ask my sister. I decide not to say anything for a while.

We start to see everybody start talking amongst themselves. The only person sitting next to me is Dakota, but she looks a little uneasy. I say a quick hello, but I’m not sure that she heard me. It was quiet and short.

I didn’t know what to say until our time was up and we had to look at the professor. Maybe next time I will say something to her.

After a while of learning the basic rules for transfiguration, we have more free time to speak to eachother. I finally get the guts to speak Dakota. I turned to Dakota. She looked like she was willing to talk so I started off with, Hey! Where were you this morning?

A stressed look was on my face until I saw Kinsey. “Oh, hi!” I say to her with a smile appearing on my face. “Sorry I wasn’t there this morning. I got an owl from my parents. I also need to get used to waking up early,” I continue with a laugh.
I had decided not to tell her what the letter had said. My family wouldn’t be happy if the whole school of Hogwarts knew about it. They were very protective over me, and they wouldn’t want me to start rumors. As Kinsey was taking notes, I pulled out the letter with my name written perfectly in the center on it, and read it once again. This was probably the fifth time I had read it.

Dakota,
Your father and I both know that you are probably already stressed, but this couldn’t wait. Your brother has been offered a very nice job in Ireland. He hasn’t moved, but it doesn’t mean he won’t. Steve has a month to accept or decline the offer. It is fully up to him whether he moves to Ireland or not. If he does accept the job, the chances of you seeing him this Christmas is very, very low. We just wanted to let you know, so if he does go to Ireland, you know what to expect.

Love and miss you, mum.

The letter still sounded like a fantasy, even in my head. That burning feeling started to grow in my throat. When you need to hold back your tears, but it hurts to. It made my throat hurt too much. I let a few tears escape my glossy, brown eyes, though I quickly wiped them away with my sleeve. I’m so happy I am in way back, where nobody can see me.

The rest of class goes pretty well. I am beginning to think that I will like this class. It sound really cool. Apparently we will get to transform different things into other things. For example: Turning a cockroach into a feather. Cool, right?! I decide to study more about Transfiguration, so I take out one of my textbooks, A History of Magic. Maybe this will say something about Transfiguration. I peek into the book and find a chapter about it; There are so many things you can transform! Eventually we will be able to transfigure ourselves! I forget about Dakota for the rest of class until the end. I look at her and see her quickly swipe away a tear. Oh no. What’s wrong? She has seemed off this entire morning but I didn’t expect this! I decide that if she didn’t want to tell me about it, I shouldn’t bother her. I just hope she tells me eventually. I spend the rest of class trying not to think about Dakota but I cant help smiling at her every once in a while. I talk to a girl sitting next to me a little bit but I don’t think we could be very good friends. The rest of class is just a review of all of the things we need to know about Transfiguration. Specifically the rules. I walk out of the classroom with a smile on my face. I can already tell that this will be a great year. As I’m walking towards my next class I come across Gen. “Hey Gen!” I say, longing to talk to someone. “Hey! How was your first class?” she asks me. “Really good. I like Transfiguration.” “Good. I wanted to tell you that mom sent us a letter today. One for me, one for you. You left before it came.” “Oh perfect!” I respond. I take the letter from my sister and start heading downstairs. I sit down at a bench close to my next class and read the letter.

Hello Kinsey! I hope your first day goes well. We miss you so much already. Your siblings, we are used to being gone, but certainly not you! Your younger brother, Jacob, has been constantly asking when you will come home. It’s hard to tell him you won’t be here until christmas! We love you so much, have fun.

Love, Mum.

I tuck the letter into my pocket and head to my next class already looking forward to christmas.
