Closed  A Clear Mind and Heart
Bela bounced excitedly into Ollivander’s Wand shop. Her parents entering close behind her.
She saw countless wand boxes lining the wooden shelves and the shop smelled of different woods.
It was a musty sweet smell akin to what she would describe as a stale forest.
“Just a moment please!” A raspy voice sounded in the back.
Bela walked up to the counter patiently waiting.
Within moments, a well aged man walked briskly to the counter. His eyes twinkled and his hair was very plumy.
“Hello!” Bela greeted.
“Why hello Miss Reinhold! It’s wonderful to see you in my shop. Thank you for your patience earlier.” Mr. Ollivander said with a smile.
Bela thought it odd that he knew her surname but she was too excited to get her wand to pay it any mind.
“Oh no worries!” She said kindly. “I need to get my wand for school. It’s on my list of supplies that I need.” She said holding up the school supplies list she was given and pointed to the word “wand”.
“Ahh indeed you do.” Ollivander agreed. “I always enjoy pairing wands with a suitable owner. Why it seems like just the other day I gave your parents their wands.” He smiled in their direction, acknowledging them.
“Feels like yesterday that it happened!” Bela’s father said with a chuckle.
Ollivander grabbed a tape measure and made his way over to Bela.
“Now, I’ll need to take some measurements real quick.” He said trying to gauge what wands would be best to try.
Bela spread her arms outward. Mr. Ollivander measured arm length and height.
“Alright then.” He said rolling the tape measure up. “I believe I know what to try first.” He murmured disappearing into the back.
“Let’s try a Cherry wand, 9 inches with unicorn core. Give it a small swish.” He took a reddish wand from a box and handed it to Bela. It was straight with a slightly curved handle.
Bela with a firm grasp, gave a quick swish of the wand and knocked several books off the counter.
“I-I’m so sorry!” She stuttered, bewildered at making such a mess.
“Pay it no mind.” Ollivander said with a dismissive wave.
“Pairings usually never happen on the first try.”
He took the wand back and replaced it with a new wand from a nearby shelf.
“Here we have Hornbeam wood, dragon heartstring, 13 1/2 inches.”
This time the wand he handed her was paler in comparison and was much twistier and longer.
Giving this wand a wave a large crack formed in a nearby window. Not enough to break the glass though.
“Is that supposed to happen?” Bela asked anxiously.
“No no, definitely not.” He shook his head. Pulling his own wand out he fixed the crack in the window
Bela gave Ollivander the wand back, crestfallen.
“Ahh, not to worry my friend.” Ollivander said. “We will find it but we know which wands are not meant for you.”
“You should have seen your mother trying to get her wand. She nearly took another customer’s head off.” Her father said jokingly laughing at the memory.
Her mother gave her father a sharp nudge.
“Oh don’t be so dramatic. They merely got blasted with a bit of wind.” She said with a twinkle of mischief in her eye.
Bela glanced at them gratefully, knowing they were trying to distract her and cheer her up.
Ollivander put the wand box back on the shelf he got it from. Moving farther into the back he returned with a new wand.
“Perhaps this one! Cedar wood, Phoenix feather, 10 inches.”
Bela saw that this wand was smaller than the last. It had a black handle and the wand was like wood spheres stack on top of each other, getting smaller as it reached the tip until it came to a point.
Grasping this one in her hand she felt warmth spread throughout her body.
“This one feels different!” She gasped. Feeling a sudden confidence she gave it a determined wave and swirls if golden light danced around the room.
“This is the wand for me!” Bela gasped excitedly.
“Ahh indeed it is!” Ollivander agreed. “It’s flexibility is stiff and suits wizards with a clear mind and heart. Good for defensive and protective charms. Cedar wand carriers I find have strength of character and unusual loyalty. I find they also have good intuition as well! A fine wand for a fine young lady.” Ollivander smiled warmly at her.
“Thank you so much for helping me find my wand! This was the thing I was excited for the most! Well, besides being able to go to school of course.” Bela said gushing at her new wand.
Ollivander laughed.
“Of course! Now as far as pricing goes, that will be 2 galleons.”
Bela reached into her pocket and pulled out the galleons and gave them to Ollivander.
“Here you go!” Bela said still beaming.
“Thank you Miss Reinhold.” Ollivander placed the money in his register.
“I wish you the best of luck in your studies!” He said encouragingly.
“Thank you! I’m sure I’ll need it!” Bela smiled. Together she left the shop with her family to continue on with obtaining her other school supplies. She couldn’t stop staring at her wand, happy with the outcome, and excited at what new adventures waited.
