Dora's never celebrated Valentine's Day. It was never an important holiday in her grandmother's house. With Christmas and New Year's come plenty of pureblood balls to rub elbows at, and while there are some Valentine's balls, they're not nearly as popular. Most kids are at school, and most adults have outgrown the holiday. Dora remembered learning about Valentine's Day from Uncle Harris. He explained that it's a holiday about love between couples. She asked if he was going to send one to his wife, and he explained to her about what a divorce is. Dora learned many new things that day.

Sometimes Bradley got a few Valentines from his girl friends, and they would attach candy to them. Dora didn't have friends, so she didn't get any. That was okay, though. Like her grandmother said, it was a silly holiday, so it didn't really matter.

That's why seeing all the buzz around Hogwarts as Valentine's Day approaches is surprising. Dora's heard people whispering in class about who they're going to ask to be their Valentine, students handing each other cute notes, and couples passing quick kisses in the corridors, and now she isn't sure how to feel. Everybody seems so excited about love, but Dora isn't in love with anyone. That didn't seem strange before, but now it does. Is she supposed to like someone by now? How do you do that?

'What do I even know about love anyways?'

All she knows about love is what she's read in stories. Like in the Fountain of Fair Fortune, how Amata and Sir Luckless fall in love at the end. They just realized they were in love, plain and simple. Dora's never felt that. Or, maybe she has, and she hasn't realized it yet? Now her head hurts...
