Word of Mouth
Date: Sept 1/22
Location: Corridors
Character(s): Shay
Interactions: @Phaedra StavrouWhen the stupid sorting ceremony was finally over - and Shay had managed to gorge himself enough that he felt he should be rolled to his bed - it was time to find the 'common rooms.' He was trying to figure out how the magic worked that made food appear and disappear while the rest of his House got up, peering under the table multiple times and muttering to himself. That was one spell he needed for sure before striking out on his own; if you could appear food then you could live pretty much anywhere.
By the time he looked up, the hall was almost empty and he was in danger of getting severely lost. He leapt to his feet, scampering after the first group of students he set eyes on.
He was too small to see who was leading them; he only knew that by the look of the faces, they were around his year. Must be the right person to follow. As he joined them, he trailed behind the group as best he could so as not get caught in the crush of bodies. The corridors were narrow, definitely not enough space for a bunch of this magnitude. It made his skin all itchy, and he felt that if he put his finger at the back of his neck he could find a zipper to ziiiip off his skin like an outer layer of clothing, shedding it so the world wasn't so hot and stifling.
To distract himself, he tongued at his top right canine. It had been getting more and more wiggly lately, and he knew it was only a matter of time until it came out. When he pushed at it with force, his gums crackled like fall leaves underfoot. If he -
A brief flash of pain, and then the tooth popped out of his mouth. It snicked across the floor and was lost in the throng of feet, much to his astonishment. A coppery taste filled his mouth and he spat out a wad of blood, tonguing at the new space in his mouth. Wow, that had been super easy. Too bad about the tooth being lost, but now it wouldn't annoy him every time he ate. Had that been the end of it, he would've been thrilled.
Instead, a girl in front of him saw him spit blood to the ground and started screaming, alerting the other students nearby. Most of them looked panicky at the sight, and before he could protest he was enveloped in the throng and promptly shoved through it. He lashed out with elbow and knees, a reflexive mess of snarling curses and glaring daggers, but he couldn't fight an entire crowd. Decidedly against his wishes, he was popped out right at the front so whoever was leading it could deal with a 'dying student.' He oughtta bite that girl who'd noticed him.
But his attention was stolen by something else. Absently wiping the blood from his mouth, he stared in horror at the older girl who'd been leading the group. "Yer blue!" he said in shock, leveling an accusatory finger at her as if it were somehow her fault that he'd chosen the wrong group to follow. "Yer supposed to be red. Why don't ye hold up a sign with the colour or something for the kids at the back? Ye don't like short people, is that it? Just 'cause yer a giantess, doesn't give ye the right to be... to be... that word that starts with a d. Disc-y or something. I s'pose our House robes'll be too long for short people, too."
People like to invent monsters and monstrosities. Then they seem less monstrous themselves. They feel better then. They find it easier to live.
