Small for his age is the only unique thing about Shay's appearance - with dark brown hair, eyes that only look blue from up close, and unremarkable features, nothing would pull him out from a crowd. He would love to describe himself as ferocious, but the first thought that would likely come to mind on focusing on him would be mousy.

Personality Type: ISTP

Due to his upbringing, Shay is rough around the edges and struggles socially. His mother never lied to him and so coming into a world where it seems everyone lies often leaves him feeling frustrated and incapable in social situations. When he's not being quiet, he's butting in at the wrong times or saying something rude - since, apparently, blunt truth is considered rude in polite society.

He has an ingrained sense of loyalty for anyone considered friend or family, but with his wariness and natural suspicion it can take a long while to get to that point. While he's extremely curious and loves exploring by himself, that side of him is rare in front of others. Mostly, people consider him abrasive, hot-tempered, and crude rather than recognizing he has trouble expressing himself or reading his peers.

From birth until the age of ten, Shay lived alone in an isolated cabin in the woods with his mother. His mother had an undiagnosed mental illness that made her slightly odd and paranoid of others, and so his contact with the the outside world was extremely limited. She homeschooled him, encouraged him to get in touch with nature, and essentially kept him away from others.

Despite this, she treated him very well. He was loved, taught many things (from how to snare animals, to how to cook, to basic wilderness survival), and always had a roof over his head with food on the table. He would’ve been content to live out the rest of his days like that, except he was spotted by someone traveling through the woods and they reported him to the authorities since he wasn’t in school.

This led to an investigation, in which the authorities came to his house. His mother, who was fine when it was only the two of them, became erratic and violent with the authorities, and they determined that she wasn’t fit to raise a child. Her violence also incited an arrest that lead to her being sent to a hospital for assessment while Shay was taken away from her.

It was at this point that she finally confessed who Shay’s father was, and he was brought to live with one Ivor Rosewood instead of his mother.

Ivor had been with Shay’s mother years ago and hadn’t any idea that he’d had a son. Still, the cold, pragmatic man decided to take Shay in because Rosewood blood ran in his veins.

Thus became the start of Shay realizing his true heritage. His mother had been a Muggle, but his father was a pureblood wizard. And not just any pureblood - both his family and his sister’s in-laws were well known to be prejudiced against anyone with Muggle blood.

That said, Ivor bade Shay keep his mother’s side of the family a secret and never mention her. The Rosewoods and Averys assumed Shay was a bastard, but at least a pureblooded wizard one. It was the first time in his life Shay had to keep a secret, and naturally the secret he had to keep was massive.

This, coupled with the fact that he was resentful of what was happening with his mother—she was now in a mental hospital—made him act out quite a bit in the year before he received his Hogwarts letter. He was an unholy terror to his stoic father, whom everyone and their dog seemed scared of. Other relatives he met told him that if he continued acting out then his father may even take it upon himself to kill Shay, Ivor’s reputation was so terrible.

However, Shay began to see a different side to the man. No matter what he did, Ivor never hurt him. He’d seem to get annoyed and give Shay a cold silence, however there was never any great punishment and if Shay was ever in trouble (like that time he ran away from home and got lost in the city, ending up backed into an alley by people noting the high-end clothes Ivor had bought him), his father would inevitably be there to save him. If he woke up shouting to bad memories of his mother being taken away, Ivor would sit silently by his bed until he fell back into a comforting sleep.

Though his mother had cared for him loudly and with overt affection, his father was teaching him that caring could be a quiet, steady thing too.

When he got his letter from Hogwarts, he wasn’t overly excited to have to go to a school when he’d assumed he’d be homeschooled all his life. He agreed to go nonetheless, deciding that learning how to use the magic he had could help convince people to leave him alone in a forest somewhere. It would also get him away from the numerous ball invitations and parties the pureblood side of his family kept inviting him and his father to, which he hated because purebloods were the worst for saying one thing and meaning another.

The day he left, Ivor curtly informed him that he could write if he wished, but he wasn’t obligated by any means. Even though he still wanted to protest the unfair treatment of his mother and be rebellious… he started his first letter on the Hogwarts Express.

First Instance of Magic: Shay’s first use of magic was pretty unremarkable; he was five and the growing season was over, the weather unfavourable to the little plants that sprouted around the forest. His mother had a fever and was content to wait it out, but he was worried for her and decided to look for the antipyretic herb anyway. She insisted he absolutely wouldn’t find it, and he didn’t after hours of searching.

Until he sat down by a tree, tired, and put his hand on the ground. It felt like something was shifting, and when he lifted his hand the herb was there. He brought it back to his mother and insisted he had used magic to grow it, but she only gave him a funny look and told him not to spout such nonsense.

The Sorting Ceremony ⇒ Shay is sorted into Gryffindor. He doesn't think much about his actual house, he's more concerned that sentient mind-reading hats exist.
Lions and Tigers and... Unicorns? ⇒ An event hosted by the professor of Care of Magical Creatures allows Shay the opportunity to meet an Augurey. He also recognizes Serena Towers there and listens in on a story she tells one of the creatures.
Valentine's Sweethearts ⇒ During an errand where people are able to write Valentine's letters, Shay takes the opportunity practice his writing skills by penning a rambling poem to Adam Harringtom.
