The Hogwarts Express Finished

Echoing throughout the station was the sound of the train's horns, indicating its time for departure. The students of Hogwarts, both old and new, had begun their journey towards the school for witchcraft and wizardry.

Everything is so new to Raizel as she walks on the train, looking for an empty compartment to stay in. She kept her balance on the train by holding on to the sides, checking every compartment she passed by but saw most of it occupied by a couple of people or a group of friends. She began to wonder if she'll eventually find people that she could call friends here. It was always a struggle for her, making friends that is. Although she is quite friendly, when it comes to meeting strangers, she can find it very difficult to interact with them. Then again, that's something that she should do in her new school. It'd be a miracle if she could survive a whole year without any friends.

Raizel sighed and after a couple more of walking, she finally found a place to sit. She put her luggage on the rack just above the seats before settling down near the window. Her eyes are on the scenery outside while still calming her nerves. It has only been a few minutes since the train left and she's already feeling homesick. It'll definitely worsen once she reaches Hogwarts where she'll be staying for the whole school year.

It was nice to get away from the buzz of the platform, from his family that would see him off. His mother and brothers all made it to the special day and yet althouth he was not, he still felt as though his father was there; tainting the moment. Avery boarded the Hogwarts Express as soon as he could, but even then the cabins had begun to fill rather quickly.

His steel eyes scanned the compartments for an empty one to call his own. He lugged his hefty trunk of equipment with him, searching for a spot where he could stow it away and settle into a seat and sink some time into reading one of his new books; perhaps 'The Dark Forces: A Guide to Self-Protection ' would do nicely; but he had to find peace to read. As he walked down the aisle, he noticed one of the cabins was hardly full just yet and in it sat a young girl, Raizel, looking out the window, lost in thought.

Avery hesitated for a moment, unsure if he should disturb her, but he decided to take a chance and approached her with a friendly wave. He didn't speak for the first few moments, as he stored his trunk in the luggage rack above their seats after having removed the book from the top of its contents. He knew that no one could claim a carriage, and he was one to take his place rather than ask for it, and he was mindful that more and more students were about to get on the train. Only once he had settled into a seat opposite her, close to the window, did he say: "I know how you feel. It's my first year too. But I'm sure we'll do just fine." and with it he offered his most reassuring smile, that he used to reassure himself.

The boy seemed quiet too, more than happy to sit in silence if she was, he did have a book to read of course.

The girl's attention was caught by the wave of Avery's hand, giving him a wave back, a small smile on her face despite the nervousness that she's been feeling on this day. She watched him as he settled his things on the luggage rack before shifting her gaze back outside the train, staring at the scenery that they passes by. Only when he took a seat on the opposite side of hers and started speaking did she return attention to Avery.

In a way, she was glad that the boy is a first year like her and that he understands how she is feeling right now. "Right, of course." She agreed with him with a smile back at him. An assurance from a stranger… in a way, it was a bit comforting. "I am both excited and nervous about this but guess the nervousness got the better of me this time." She said to him with a soft chuckle. "I'm Raizel." The girl introduced herself, holding out her hand for a handshake. "It's nice to meet you and thanks for the assurance." Strangely enough, she felt a bit less nervous now that she's talking to someone. Yes, the boy is someone that she doesn't know and this could also be her chance to gain a new friend in this new place.

"It tends to, when you're alone. At least now we're alone-- together!" He offered her a small smile, still in an attempt at reassurance, but beneath this his candour was shaky; nervous and uncomfortable himself.

He took a moment to respond after that, pulling his eyes up from the cover of his leather-bound text book and assessing her hand as if he was wary, as if it threatened to engulf him like devil's snare. After a blink and a smaller smile yet still he awkwardly reached to shake her hand, letting it return to the comfort of his lap thereafter.

"I'm Avery. -- It's nice to meet you too, Raizel. And it's okay, you looked like you needed it! I got told I had to fight a strange muggle-troll to get onto the platform by my brothers, so anything is better than becoming muggle-troll jelly." He glanced out of the window, then.

"When you think of it like that, they did me a favour by giving me something else to think about." He said, before turning his attention back to her and his book. He didn't seem to be so interested in the book anymore now that they had gotten talking, when mere moments ago she could have sworn he would be the sort to sit and read for the whole journey.

The girl's smile never faded as they shook hands. "Avery, that's a nice name. Again, it's nice to meet you and hope we can be friends" Raizel told her before letting go of his hand. The boy was probably just as nervous as she is and is doing great in comforting someone. It was inspiring in a way. "You're very nice, you know." She honestly told him before listening to him and what his brother had told him, letting out a soft chuckle at the thought of having to get past a muggle-troll. Scary thought though but funny in a way.

"It is nice to have something to think about to distract yourself from all the nerves." She told him as she followed his gaze towards the outside. "Although that didn't work on me because of how nervous I was. Even with all the amazing stuff in Diagon Alley to think about wasn't enough." Raizel said with a sheepish grin, a hint of embarrassment present on her face with her cheeks reddening a bit. She turned to him once again. "Say, are you excited? In starting school that is." She asked. "Learning spells... brewing potions. They sound so cool and fascinating."The more she talked with him, the more comfortable she was getting, helping her get over the nerves that she had been feeling since leaving home and that is not a bad thing.

Almost as soon as she said it did his chalky skin flush pink for a few moments, causing him to shift his gaze and turn his lips up. He wasn't too experienced with compliments, less so from a girl.

"Oh uh- thanks. Raizel is a nice name too, and you seem nicer for sure!" He said, as if to defer to her completely as he reached up a hand to scratch at the back of his head. He was keen to move on from that. How could she know? Would that change of she knew who he was? A flood of questions pushing him to move on.

"I am. There is lots to be learned but I'm most looking forward to defence against the dark arts class and charms but I suppose that's everybody's answer. Astronomy maybe? History of Magic I heard is taught by a ghost!" He said, with a bright flash of infectious curiosity.

"Diagon Alley was fun, did you get your wand from Ollivanders?" He asked inquisitively, as well if that particular subject interested him chiefly, even above his apparent interest in his text book.

The young girl observed him quietly, finding his reactions quite interesting and finding it a little bit funny. That made her chuckle softly. "Thank you." Raizel said back when he returned the compliment. She paused to listen about what he is excited to learn at school. "A subject taught by a ghost?" Raizel wondered out loud with a tilt of her head before smiling at that thought. "That sounds pretty cool!" She replied, finding it very fascinating that they'll have a ghost for a teacher. History isn't exactly her best suit but maybe with a ghost teaching them, she can actually focus on it.

"I've heard about those subjects from my dad before and I admit, I am interested in them as well." Raizel admitted to him. "Those subjects are gonna be so hard. Hope I can survive them." She paused for a brief moment there before answering Avery's question about the wand. "Oh, yes, I got mine from Ollivander's. Neat place. It sure has a lot of wands. Broke a vase when I tried one of the wands." She said with a scratch of her cheek. "Is that where you got yours too?" Raizel asked with a spark of curiosity present in her brown eyes.

"Of course, I’m not sure if there is any other place to get a wand!” He said, though he looked shocked as she detailed the exploding vase, his brows shooting up his forehead. “My wand was the first one given to me, which says a lot about our ‘connection’ apparently. – I was kind of hoping it would make the attendant grow fur from his ears or something!” He chuckled along with her lightly.

He pulled his wand out from his sleeve pocket, to show it to her. It was a sharp design with very few ridges or abnormalities. The ‘hilt’ or ‘handle’ part of the wand was ornate and looked to be made of some kind of gemstone. “Chestnut wood and Unicorn Hair core. - It’s said to be a ‘consistent’ wand, apparently. What about yours?” He gave as he looked from his wand to her,

He smiled at her then, but it fled his face almost as soon as it was conjured up from the depths of his natural frown. He was trying his best. Hah you will survive them, I am sure. If not I’m sure there will be study clubs and if not your housemates can help. - What house were your parents?” He asked curiously, it didn’t occur to him that her parents might not have both been wizards or witches, or better yet, not been wizards and witches at all. Perhaps his ignorance was a sign of his own status, or perhaps it was down to his nerves which were manifesting as the conversation went on.

Raizel eyed the wand when he showed it to her with awe. Every wand is different after all and it is always cool to see the appearance of other people's wands. "That looks pretty cool and you got yours on the first try huh. The first ones that were offered to me weren't exactly that fond of me. Took a couple of tries to finally get this one." She slowly pulled out hers. A wand with a handle looks a bit twisted like that of a drill, eventually straightened on the tip with a dark reddish brown color.

"Let's see… it's a chestnut like yours and has a dragon heartstring as its core." She recalled what she had been told when they found the perfect wand that matches her. "What else did they say about it… oh right. According to them, it's quite flexible and perfect for fighting spells and for duelists." Raizel further told Avery as she held it out to give him a proper look at it and then looked up to him when he asked about her parents. "Well, from what they told me… they were both in Gryffindor." She answered him, leaning back on her seat and began studying her own wand, touching the ridges where it twists. "What about yours? Did they go to Hogwarts as well?" She asked him back.

Avery looked between their wands with a grin, he seemingly liked to compare them and note the differences as she spoke. “Yes! Mother was surprised also, as even she had a few tries before she got hers, though that was a long time ago. This one just seemed to ‘work.’ ” He gave as she talked about her wand qualities, he lost his smile slightly as she spoke about it being a perfect wand for duelling, an ounce of envy in his sharp features.

A duellist? Well I hope we can practice together, although my wand isn’t best for it, it’s something I really want to do. - Do you reckon you’ll be a Gryffindor too? He said inquisitively, looking at her wand again before she asked about his own parents; which caused him to go quiet for a while.

“Yes, all my family went to Hogwarts actually. Though all of them were in Slytherin.” He said, sounding almost ashamed of that fact, or something else as he fidgeted in his seat. The black haired boy opened the front cover of his text book, glimpsing the first few words so as to avoid her gaze entirely. He felt a red hot rush sweep over him, and he froze in one position, hoping that nothing more would be said or asked about it.

Conspicuously, he cleared his throat and remarked: “Quentin Trimble, his book has been a staple for years. - Which textbook will you read first?”
