Rhys should've known the second they heard the startled gasps of their Gryffindor peers that something bad was about to happen. And when they turned to see what the commotion was, they certainly should've guessed that the red envelope in the talons of an approaching owl was certainly for them. It swiftly descended down towards Rhys, then swiftly dropped the envelope before them before flying off. It had done its job, so now it was off to hunt mice and leave Rhys to face the wrath of whoever had sent what was surely a howler.
It was probably their father. He was good at yelling at his kids, and Rhys's mother was as likely as to know how to send a howler as their father was to be able to file his taxes using a computer. Yeah, it would most definitely be Rhys's father. And this was almost certainly going to be about a conflict Rhys had recently had with another student. A conflict that had resulted in Rhys punching the other student several times and giving him a bloody, probably broken nose. They weren't necessarily proud of it, and it had been semi-deserved, but Rhys's older brothers had caught wind of it almost immediately, so it was only a matter of time before their parents did, too.
Cautiously, Rhys picked up the envelope before them. It was shaking, like their mother's cell phone would if she had clients desperately trying to reach her. And it was... growing warmer. Steadily overheating, also like their mum's cell phone after she'd been on it all day to manage her clients' issues. It's going to explode if I don't open it, it suddenly dawned on Rhys. That was the nature of Howlers-- upon delivery, they would steadily overheat until the point where the envelope itself would explode and the recipient would be forced to hear whatever the sender of the Howler had to say. Rhys didn't particularly want to make a scene in the middle of the Great Hall, but it wasn't like they could dip out for a minute to find somewhere else to open the Howler. It would explode before they got the chance. They had to open it there, in front of the entire school.
Might as well get it over with, Rhys thought, sighing. With a single, quick motion they tore the wax seal of the envelope off and were blown back by the force of it bursting open. Almost immediately, the loud, booming voice of their father filled the entire great hall as the Howler began its long tirade.
Upon the end of the letter, the envelope promptly burst into flames, raining ashes down onto the table and leaving Rhys to sit there in shock. They were embarrassed beyond belief. Not only had their father addressed them as young lady -- a term that made them want to gag-- he'd also gone on about Rhys "getting into fights" and "punching students", phrasing it like it was multiple fights, multiple students. When the reality was that they'd only punched one bloke, after he'd pushed them into the goddamn lake! Plus, now the entire school knew all of their family business, and the fact that their parents can't afford to be caring about their children because they have to work. What a load of bull.Rhys Read!
You've got a lot of nerve, young lady. Just when it seemed like you weren't going to be an issue at Hogwarts, I hear from your brothers that you're going off and punching another student! And a Slytherin, at that! You should be ashamed of yourself. Just how do you think that this will reflect back on me? I have a reputation to uphold, and if word gets out that my wayward daughter is at Hogwarts getting up to a load of trouble, I'll be the laughing stock of the firm!
And the stress this is putting on your mother as well! We are both heavily disappointed in you, but to see your mother fretting over your wellbeing most of the time! She has important work to keep up with as well, and cannot afford to be stressing herself over the fact that you're off at Hogwarts getting into fights.
Winter break is coming up shortly, and you can bet that you'll be sitting out while the rest of us partake in the festivities.
I expect an apology letter addressed to your mother and I to arrive by owl within the next week, or else you'll spend winter break cleaning the house as well.
I've got my eye on you.
A bit further down at the table, Rhain and Rhun guffawed, smirking at Rhys and exchanging comments with each other. It felt like every single pair of eyes was on Rhys, and they were not enjoying the attention. They'd accepted that some form of punishment would follow the Great Lake debacle, but they didn't expect to be so humiliated, in front of everyone. Flushing, Rhys kept their gaze on their food, avoiding looking at anyone and hunching their shoulders down. Leaving the Great Hall in favor of being somewhere, anywhere, else would single them out as the recipient of the Howler and they'd be the talk of the school. Forget their dad being the "laughing stock of the firm", now they would be the laughing stock of Hogwarts.
Rhys pushed their tray away, not particularly hungry after being called out in front of the entire school, and slouched forward to rest their head down as they crossed their arms. Distantly, they remembered to breathe, but they couldn't break the feeling that everyone was still looking over at them.

howler in the hall
While students ate their dinner, the dining hall was flooded with noise and the clinking of dishes. In the middle of the commotion, Ethan is seated at one of the long tables in the grand hall, eating the food on his plate. Even though the meal is not the most appetizing, he is hungry, so it will do.
The table where someone was seated was suddenly slammed by a howler, a big bird-like monster with a loud, screeching voice. The howler began reading the wrongdoings of the person it was addressed to, and the room became silent. A mixture of sympathy and amusement pervaded everyone as they watched the drama unfold.
The person looked like they wanted to sink into the floor and disappear. Ethan sat there, still and silent. He felt sorry for them but also couldn't help but feel a little bit relieved that it wasn't him who was in the spotlight.
When the howler finished, he went over to the person and said, “That must be so embarrassing.” He gave them an awkward pat on the shoulder. “Are you alright?” he asked, concern etched on his face. It was always mortifying to be called out in front of everyone, no matter what the reason.@Rhys Read

Erin's head shot up from her plate as she heard a loud voice suddenly echo through the Great Hall:
Rhys Read!
You've got a lot of nerve, young lady...
It wasn't hard to locate the source of the sound, which Erin recognized as the terrifying Howler, or the poor Gryffindor student at the brunt of the impact. "Poor Rhys," Erin thought to herself. Erin was no stranger to the threat of a Howler—her own Momma had made many threats to send one should Erin decide to get into too much trouble at Hogwarts. After everything was said and done, Erin noticed another Gryffindor student get up and walk over to the person, who she learned through the Howler was Rhys Read. She couldn't hear what was said, but she did see the student who had walked over give a rather awkward pat on the back to Rhys. "Maybe I should say something too," Erin thought. Even though she didn't know Rhys per se, she did feel like the least she could do was let them know that Howlers suck.
Not wanting to cause a bigger scene, though, Erin decided it would be best to wait until dinner was over and then going up to Rhys to offer her support. "I wouldn't want to embarrass them even further," Erin thought to herself as she returned to her plate of food.

howler in the hall
Rhys was pulled from their dissociation daze when they heard a boy speak to them. "That must be so embarrassing.” Lifting their head, Rhys was able to register the fact that it was another Gryffindor student as he gave them an awkward pat on the shoulder. They refrained from inching away at the physical contact, instead taking a deep breath as he asked if they were alright.interacting with @Ethan Smith
"I mean, relatively? I've already handled the situation, but.." They shrugged. "Just my dad being my dad." Rhys looked down at their hands, which they'd subconsciously balled into fists. That probably wasn't the best, given that their knuckles were still bandaged up from the fight only a few days before. Rhys unclenched them and shoved them into their pockets, shrugging. "I'll live. Interesting that you would make your way over here to check, though. Don't know if you heard, but apparently I'm starting fights left and right." They said drily, offering a meager smile. There was no punch behind the words-- Rhys was only kidding, but they were surprised this boy would even be seen talking to them, given how bad their dad had made them seem in the Howler. If the roles were reversed, Rhys would've probably taken a moment to acknowledge the howler, feel bad for the recipient, and then go about their business. Like most had probably done just now. So the fact that this boy seemed to care surprised them. Or maybe he didn't care, and he just felt obligated to make a point of seeing if they were okay. Either way, Rhys was unnerved.

Ivy was eating her food, a big plate of lambchops. She took a sip of her pumpkin juice and spat it out from a loud commotion on the other side of the room. She looked over and saw a howler at the gryffindor table. It mentioned, well, more like screamed, something about a fight, probably the one she had heard about from one of her classmates the other day. Well, they didn't exactly tell her, she eavesdropped. It was practically a hobby now. The recipient looked like they were one with the floor, obviously humiliated upon repair. Several of her classmates were giggling, and Ivy just felt second hand embarrassment for the poor recipient. Ivy considered going to comfort them, but she figured they were embarrassed enough, as they were red as a tomato and seemed to be more and more one with the floor.
Ivy grabbed a 5th helping as her classmates muttered quietly, some about how embarrassing it was, and some about how they deserved it for punching someone. Ivy didn't agree with the last comment. "poor kid." Ivy muttered. She called everyone a kid, even the people her age. She saw several people going to comfort Rhys, and Ivy just felt worse for not helping. "Thats just how the cookie crumbles." she thought, quoting her mum. She went back to her plate.
