A casually posed question

After he met Taisia for the first time, he could not get her out of his head. Every time he saw her, his heart would beat faster and there was a curious feeling in his stomach. He watched her during classes, carefully watching out that she does not notice, and he tried to be near her in the common room, always seemingly absorbed in a book.
Then he had seen the announcement of a valentine's ball. Unsure how to proceed, carried around this thought and imagination of them both going to the ball together. But how to ask her? What if she says no? And her friends, what would they say? I don't want to be laughed at. Why should she say yes? I am just a dumb little first year and we only ever spoke once. Edward pondered a week after reading the ball announcement. Should he casually run in to her in the corridors and take the moment alone to ask? Nah, that's too weird. 'Oh sorry, Taisia that I ran you over. Do you want to go to the ball with me?' She'd never say yes like that! Or should he just approach her in the common room? But just out of the blue? 'Hey, we met once. Wanna swap Quidditch for dancing with me at the ball?' No, no, no! Maybe he should just write a letter? At least she will probably read the letter alone and not surrounded by friends. I can less make a fool out of myself. And it seemed safer and less intrusive. More his style.
So, he wrote the letter and headed to the owlery, since he still had to wait for his own owl.
Once he arrived, he had second thoughts again. What if she thinks, I am a coward? Writing a letter is not very brave nor original. Heck, I survived the unity meeting with a snake, screaming and angry people, I will survive asking her out in person. And he was just about to head back when Taisia entered the owlery.
Suddenly, his mouth was dry, his hands sweaty and his brave thoughts gone. "Oh, hi Taisia!" he got out. Now, how to start this? Writing the letter had been much easier. "Uhm.. I just wanted to go looking for you", he started. "I had written a letter but.. uhm.." He stammered. The words just didn't want to get out of his mouth. He shortly closed his eyes, took a deep breath and then he said: "I wanted to ask you uh.. whether you want to go to the Valentine's ball with me?" He hold his breath. Now the words were out and he could not take them back and he could only await her response.

A Casually Posed Question
Feb. 08 | @Edward Foxe |
Back and forth, back and forth, Taisia and Althea's letters had gone. Mostly, Althea had just been sharing her advice for the situation, as well as fashion tips for the up coming balls. Taisia had bought herself one over Christmas Break for the upcoming Valentine's Ball hosted by Hogwarts, but she and her friend @Irina Sousa had ended up planning to hold their own a few days later. Of course Althea did not approve of wearing the same outfit to two different events, much less ones that were only three days apart.
This was what she found herself thinking about as she walked up the steps to the top of the Owlery, her latest letter to her sister in her hand. Her thoughts were interrupted when she entered the Tower and saw who was there. Edward. The subject of the recent eight letters between sisters. Including the one in her hand. Taisia felt her fingers tighten their grip on the letter. Why she was worried that he would somehow see it she wasn't sure.
Taisia planned to just nod and smile at him, acting like the meeting hadn't affected her. She would wait until he left, rip open the seal on the letter and tell Althea about her exchange with him. Except he stopped.
Oh god. What is he going to say to me?
Nervous green eyes met shy grey ones and Edward greeted her. Unlike their first meeting, Taisia had managed a 'hello' back.
That's all? A hello? Technically he didn't say anything more than that but...
Her though trailed off as she realised his last words had been him telling her he was looking for her.
Here goes. He's going to tell me to stop being ridiculous and that he would never like a girl like me. A letter. Great. He was letting me down so much that he couldn't bear to say it to my face! Taisia almost held her hand out to take the letter, but his next words froze her.
Go to the Valentine's Ball. GO TO THE VALENTINE'S BALL WITH EDWARD FOXE??
It suddenly occurred to her that he must have thought she had some sort of speaking disability- not that there was anything wrong with that- with all the times she'd been left speechless.
"Umm, yes of course, I'd love to go with you!!"
Unsure what she was supposed to do now she asked, "Do you have a plan for your outfit? My sister would chastise me if we didn't make sure our outfits won't clash!"

An uncomfortable silence had come over them after his question. Why did I ask? She'll probably just say no. Why should she want to go to the ball with me? She surely prefers someone older than me. Also, do I look fine? How does my hair look? He ran his hand through his hair.
But then she spoke and Edward's heart began to beat faster. "Umm, yes of course, I'd love to go with you!!"
Of course? And did she just say love? Oh, right, 'love to go with me'. Love to go with me?! That's a yes, isn't it?!! Edward started confused but then a big grin appeared on his face. He just couldn't help it. It would not go away. Stop grinning like an iditot! he thought.
"Do you have a plan for your outfit? My sister would chastise me if we didn't make sure our outfits won't clash!" His grin disappeared. Oh, I need an outfit? It took him a moment to answer. "Uhm.. well. I just thought, I'd wear a black suit." He started and tried to read Taisia's facial expression. He only had this one black suit that was fitting such an occasion but now that she asked, he became insecure. "Unless you'd like me to get something else?" He wasn't sure where to get something else so quick but if that would be the conditions, he'd follow them. He really wanted to go to the ball with her.
