A Step Towards Unity
It had been several months now since Howard White and Dealla Prince had decided that perhaps better understanding might be the way to foster some unity at this school. Tensions had been running high for years, between part-giants being attacked, anonymous articles against mixed race students being published in the school newspaper, and several school events going off the rails.
Even worse, with the Hexwizard tournament, all eyes were on Hogwarts, and they seemed to have the unfailing determination to interpret what they saw in the worst way possible---and blame it on the school's policy that allowed mixed race students to attend. Really, it was quite ridiculous.
But fear doesn't always follow rationale, and being told over and over that your peers are dangerous and have it out for you will, at some point, leave its traces.
Today was the day to change that. Over the course of months, Howard and Dealla had invited several mixed race students to talk about their experiences, about their heritage and abilities, to invite friendship and understanding and help combat the lies spread by the Daily Prophet, amongst others.
No one in attendance would be forced to reveal themselves, there were likely some not comfortable with showing that they were different. Those who did, however, were invited to mingle with the students that were fully human, to chat, to eat snacks together, to perhaps make some friends. The goal was to both give mixed race students encouragement to come forward and be proud of their unique traits, and to let fully human students interact with and get to know them in the full knowledge of who they are, hopefully working towards eliminating prejudice and unfounded fear and mistrust.
When the students entered the rehearsal room that day, they would find several groups of armchairs and couches, arranged to split the conversation into groups and to encourage the students to talk with others they might not usually interact with. Small tables offered cookies and small sandwiches along with stacks of chocolate frogs free for the taking, tea and coffee and juice.
Méabh Regan and Mateo Sáez were present in the room as well, both of them having special talents in their own right that they might end up demonstrating, but also to supervise this gathering; it seemed to have garnered more attention than anticipated.
Still, one could hope it would be a peaceful afternoon. That everyone would leave feeling more confident, more understanding. One could hope.

A Step Towards Unity
Anna didn’t know if this was a good idea anymore. As she walked to the rehearsal room, she tumbled over her thoughts. She signed up for an errand called ‘A Step Towards Unity’, where they were supposed to meet with students of different races and abilities. Being a pureblood witch came with many warnings from her parents about the dangers of the unknown, or to say it better, different. They weren’t hateful towards others who were different, they were more wary. And Anna was too, kind of. She really wanted to know what was it like being special, well in the wizarding community. That in itself sounded both terrifying and amazing. She also hoped that she would make some more friends.' ' - thinkinghex: 5c336b
" " - speaking
She came upon the door of the classroom, and shaking herself of bad thoughts, came in. Inside was very spacious with various places to sit, eat and chat. No one was there except the new potions professor and the librarian. Anna gave a little hello, and sat down on one of the couches, entertaining herself with some snacks, while waiting for others to arrive. As she munched on a sandwich, she thought about the students that were called to speak about their race today. 'They must be really brave, or they felt safe at Hogwarts. I know that there aren't many adults that are willing to talk about things like that easily. This will be a start of something good', she smiled.

Marius Jinhao Brown had always believed that everyone was born equal, no matter what their blood status, social class, race, intelligence level, belief or religion, personality, gender, orientation, culture, and country of origin were. He was fully aware that some people, even minorities and the prejudiced ones, thought otherwise - that they themselves were better than those outside their group - but he closed both his eyes and ears to this false belief.
But believing was not enough.
Marius was a curious individual, had always been ever since he was a child, and this curiosity made sure it accompanied the preteen almost everywhere he went, but in particular when he was in touch with a subject he was interested in. Like this equality matter, for example. Lately, the Hufflepuff had been trying to dive down deep into different matters that could potentially be used as an irrational reason for a useless debate; he had been attempting to get more knowledge and understanding in regards of different gender identities and religions.
This discussion was certainly a great opportunity for him to get to know more about different blood statuses in the wizarding world. It was held not so long after the last class on Friday, so really, he could just attend in his school uniform; however, the twelve-year-old decided against it. He wanted to wear something more comfortable, in particular after considering the fact that he had no idea how long this event would take place.
But of course, it would be inappropriate for him to wear a t-shirt; that would scream disrespect towards the seriousness of the event's aim, Professor Regan who had worked hard to ensure the possibility of it, and his fellow participants. Worse, one might interpret his attire as a medium of disrespecting the misunderstood people, who were clearly the stars of the discussion, and this would be the last thing Marius wanted to happen. The Chinese-English boy wanted to be a part of those who promote equality, not against it.
He thus settled on his favourite button-down, the brown chequered one, and put on khaki trousers to go with it. After finished getting dressed, the Hufflepuff grabbed his satchel, not his schoolbag, as he had packed his favourite Muggle pen (it would be much more practical than a quill which required being dipped into a bottle of ink every now and then) and the notebook where he often write potential inspiring ideas in; he would not want to miss the chance to jot down notes, something interesting may happen in this event. It was only after making sure he did not forget anything that the tween left his dorm, out the Hufflepuff Common Room, straight to the venue on the fourth floor of Hogwarts.
Entering the Rehearsal Room, Marius greeted and smiled at both Professor Regan and Mr Sáez, the two adults he could see in the room and had conversed with before, even if the talks were just small talks and professional discussions between a Herbology teacher and a Hogwarts second year, a school librarian and a frequent library visitor.
Perhaps it was the attire, or maybe it was the setting of either the venue or the event, but somehow the Hufflepuff felt there was something different about the young Bolivian today. The preteen's heart skipped a bit in a way it never had, and a warm, sweet feeling started to walk through his veins.
Quickly, Marius shook himself impatiently. "I'm being ridiculous," said the boy to himself, inwardly so no one could hear it but him. Trying to distract his attention from this matter, he casted his soft brown eyes to scan the place. There were lots and lots of people, a couple of whom he personally knew or at least knew by name. However, he merely stood where he currently was, as if rooted to the floor, unsure where to go or whom to approach. There was no way he would make a request to join lovebirds or best friends and let himself be a third wheel, he could not achieve his main aim of joining this discussion (deeper understanding of the wizarding world's "half-breed") when all he could focus on was the feeling of jealousy and of being ignored for the favour of their bestie or sweetheart.
It was rather fortunate that he managed to spot a dark-haired girl sitting all by her lonesome. The Hufflepuff was not good at starting a small talk, but he guessed it was better than potentially sulking all the way through this event. Gathering enough courage, Marius finally took steps and approach her. "Good day," he said politely and formally. "I do hope you won't mind if I sit here?"
While waiting for her answer, he made a quick scan of her. Rather small eyes, rather resembling Mum's; this student might as well be of Chinese descent like himself, or at least of East Asian. Cheeks he perceived as quite rosy and quite thick. And lips that seemed more like lip gloss-covered rather than of its natural colour. Was she really as friendly as she looked like?

A Step Towards Unity
Alan had been a little unsure at first whether he wanted to out himself as a Metamorphmagus to a bunch of students. But he knew of the importance of this event and how it could possibly give hope and pride to students who shared the insecurities that he once had in his being. His friends, those who knew at least, had helped a great deal with Alan coming to acceptance with who he was. Ironically it had also helped him come to terms with a coming out of other kinds, not that it would be important for this specific event. Needless to say the sixth year was a little nervous, then again there was hardly something he had to fear as most of his friends or people he hang out with had already found out or been told one way or another and those were the opinions that truly mattered.
Though perhaps to really show off what he could do, he should attend as someone else? Alan knew that Howard had previously given him permission to use his appearance for practice and Alan had briefly discussed the idea of using it to demonstrate his talents too, as he was not a fan of copying another's appearance without their permission. So the plan had played out in his mind, before he put it into action. Briefly checking his reflection in the glass of a passing window, Alan pushed open the doors of the Rehearsal Room with a nervous smile.
It was odd at first and despite the permission he was awfully unsure that perhaps now that he was doing it, @Howard White would retract his decision anyway, being freaked out with the way Alan had managed to copy his appearance to a tee. With his complexion now pale, his hair dark and sticking up in an attempt to tame the unruly mane as his once green eyes now shone red. Alan would have chewed on his lip if it wasn't for the slightly more pointed incisors giving him an almost predator appearance if it wasn't for the unsure way he carried himself over to the group appointed to him. Those who had been paying attention to this gathering, would be quick to notice that there were now two people sharing the appearance of one Howard White, one of which was trailed by a uncanny Bengal cat with the name of Tiger. At first glance and based on Alan's appearance by itself however, the resemblances was uncanny. His gaze found Howard among the students of another group and gave a grin, before he focused on his own group, giving them a nod. He would be curious to see how they would react before he blew his "cover".

A Step Towards Unity

Equality and unity were always something people were seeking, no matter wizards or muggles. As a pureblood child who grew up in the wizarding world, Lindsey knew that it was a world more than you could think. Humans made up a large proportion of the population, but there were a great deal of non-humans, as well as their descents with human beings. Half-humans, they were called, and sometimes were unfairly treated. Debates on them never died away, from the trifles all the way to big events. Her parents educated her to be fair, to treat everyone as equal, to see the best of others - and so Lindsey had always regarded herself as just, considering these people with special blood running in their veins same as full human beings. She had never seen a half-breed student attacking others, nor did she see someone with special talents going evil…erm, sorry, there was once a Metamorphmagus woman in her life who dealt irreversible damage to her family, but even though Lindsey admitted the Metamorphmagus talents were indeed very frightening if not used properly, she had nothing to say towards the Metamorphmagi group. Good or evil, they were never divided by races, but instead the hearts. Human wizards and witches were sometimes eviler than those of other races.
But things were usually easier said than done. Lindsey had evaluated in her head regarding what she would do when she found parthumans around her, the potential risk of things going wrong which were admittedly higher than those of fullhumans. Nothing would change, she decided, there shouldn’t be any difference. The evil would still be eliminated, but not those who shared his race or talent but had a good heart. She would arm herself with and be shielded the belief, she thought, and her trial came when her friend Lucia was discovered as a part-veela. When Lindsey first heard the news - it was already days after, the rumours spreading around the school as fire, she was grateful that the first thing she thought was Lucia’s feelings. It must hurt, to be rejected and refused. Thankfully, she did hold her belief, decidedly and firmly. Nothing could shake the foundation of their friendship, nothing could.
But still, she was tired. Tired of the endless quarrels and fights, tired of the rumours spreading about the potential part-humans around. For a second Lindsey was confused, why were people so persisted in knowing others’ identity? Granted, she knew that things had a higher potential of going wrong for those with special blood running in their veins, but didn’t people had coping approaches? For werewolves, there was the wolfsbane potion; dhampirs had the blood-flavoured lollipops; etc. And seers were even looked up to, did they really know how many ancient and noble houses wished there was a seer in their family? But still people were obsessed in joining the debate, quarrels starting everywhere. Oh, what if they could just stop and have a nice tea party and talk…
And then the chance came. Lindsey knew that this errand would be her errand as soon as it came out, and she steadily signed up for it when she heard that Lucia was also going. Her thoughts could be expressed, and most importantly she could hear others’ stories - especially those who had special races or talents - sorry, no, not special, she had just said they were the same - who were different from her. This could be a great opportunity for her to steady her own belief, and see if she could do something, other than those useless and endless debates and accusations - so fingers crossed, she was hoping for a friendly chat.
Crawling out from the badger’s bungalow in the basements, she shoved her hands into her pocket and made her way towards the rehearsal room. There wasn’t much time left, and Lindsey was walking fast towards her own group. Chocolate brown eyes gazed around, and found three were already present. Two boys, a girl. The girl seemed relatively young, presumably a first year, and the younger boy seemed a bit familiar. Perhaps she had seen him around in the common room or beside the Hufflepuff dining table, Lindsey wasn’t very sure, but the Asian-looking boy was possibly a housemate of hers. And the last one with a bengal cat…wasn’t that Howard White? She had been the elder’s Quidditch teammate in her second year, Howard was a brilliant chaser. Even though Lindsey had quit the team and joined Duelling instead, she knew Howard well from the well-played Quidditch games. Hey, he was famous. The atmosphere so far seemed friendly, and Lindsey liked it. No quarrels, no fights. Let it remain. Please.
“Hi. I’m Lindsey.” She greeted them with a friendly smile while sitting down, and a special nod towards Howard. Lindsey wasn’t sure if he still remembered her and thought it might be rude to say hi right away, but maybehe would recognise her instead? And soon her gaze would be drawn by the cat - everybody knew that Lindsey loved cats. And this one was the same species as her own (oh, her sweet little Napoleon!), so he or she naturally caught her attention. “Your cat’s cute.” She’d add, her smile on her lips even wider. Really, who could refuse such a cute little ball of fluff?

Please note: There is a scar mentioned on Tes's wrist several times. This is a werewolf bite, not anything outside of the site ratings
Tes's stomach was tied in knots as she walked into the reheasral room where the unity event was taking place. She didn't regret her decision to come here and talk about who she was, but she felt very justified in being nervous. She'd run into Irina on the way here, and although she saw Colin across the room in another group as well, she'd been pointed here by the professor of potions and had to walk over alone (and vaguely sweaty). She slipped off her yellow jacket that was a wonderfully fluffy fabric, draping it over her right arm, where her signature bandana she tied around her wrist was missing. She was wearing a button down tank top a similarly gaudy shade of yellow, showing off her freckled shoulders and wiry muscles.
She was of course thankful that this errand had been organized, realizing the good will it could foster in her fellow students. Not to mention seeing all the students here either voluntarily sharing their stories or listening to others was nearly enough to drive her to proud tears. All she could think about was Rina's hesitant invitation to spend the moon with her, not used to being afraid and alone, her momma's sad gaze whenever she saw the bite that "cursed" her daughter with the same infliction she suffered from, the scruffy clothes and hungry frames from their family friends that struggled to find employment in the wizarding world, and Colin's sadness over losing a brother to a werewolf that had likely been rejected from society. All her friends and family that suffered in some way or another from being a werewolf. Even she had felt flickers of fear for her own safety with everything happening in the world, afraid that all the progress she'd seen in her fellow students with their willingness to accept people like herself- people that were different- may all be undone through violence.
She rubbed her hands together nervously, noting the other students already present. There was a girl with black hair snacking happily and calmly on a sandwich, a boy she thought she recognized as a fellow Hufflepuff in a delightful checkered button-down shirt, another boy that looked very similar to a boy she didn't know but could see elsewhere in the room (twins maybe?), and finally an older girl that she caught complimenting the boy's cat as she walked up. She glanced at the cat, eyes lighting up as she couldn't help but agree- it was a very pretty kitty after all.
With one last deep breath, she mentally repeated to herself why she was here, This is everything I've wanted. A chance to talk to others about what I am. If we do this, we can put a stop to the prejudice so many of my loved ones have to face! She let her eyes glance over at her fellow wolves in their separate group, wondering if they knew about each other off-handedly, but mostly reminding herself that she wasn't alone, not even here. Narrowing her attention back to the group she'd been pointed towards, she felt more steady and centered. She wasn't here for herself, she was here for people like her momma and her friends.
Pasting her best smile on her face, bright enough that only someone she knew could catch the way her eyes didn't shine as much as they normally did, she skipped forward and plopped herself down to join the group. Before she could chicken out, she happily raised a hand in a friendly wave, casually exposing the scars around her wrist that could easily be identified as bite marks from some sort of animal, or more aptly, a wolf. "Hi! I'm Tesla Stone, but you can call me Tes! I'm a first year Hufflepuff!" she almost felt choked as a flash of fear struck through her, but she stubbornly carried on, even as her voice shook almost imperceptibly, "I'm really happy to see so many people here, and I'm really excited to meet you all. I'm here to share my story and talk to you all too, since I've been a werewolf for two years now."
She couldn't help but feel like her stomach dropped all the way to the ground the second she said it, almost wishing she could take it back. This was a supposed to be an open space, and the professor walking around obviously wouldn't let anything go too far, not to mention Tes hadn't had any issues yet from the students she'd told! Despite all that her smile wavered, and she couldn't keep the eye contact she'd made with everyone around the circle, drifting her gaze down to stare at her hands, wishing slightly that she had her usual wrist covering, if only for something to fiddle with. She'd shared what she was with students that were practically strangers before, but in a group like this with people she had never spoken to before the fear was even more pronounced. She forced her smile to stay on her face, even as her hands shook and she wished she'd kept her jacket on to cover her wrist, even in the heat of the room full of students.

A Step Towards Unity
Mateo had never understood the notion of needing to be ashamed of being a Parselmouth when he was younger. To him, being able to talk to snakes had been a talent he'd been lucky enough to be gifted with. However, as he'd grown older and experienced the world, he came to understand that not everyone was particularly friendly with those that were different. That was saddening to him.
He'd heard discussions in the Library of an event Professor Regan was going to run, and the idea peaked his interest. Figuring the Professor may want another adult around, he'd volunteered to lend a hand.
Smiling at the students that entered, he would be sat in one of the chairs with his snake friend, Buddy. He'd been given a list of students who he was to help with discussions, and although not all of them seemed to have arrived, he decided to push along things.
Though, it would seem he would not need to, as one younger student would begin the conversation with mentions of being a werewolf.
"I can't say that I've had the pleasure of meeting too many werewolves in my time, but here at Hogwarts there seems to be plenty, all of which I look forwards to meeting hopefully," Mateo would comment. "And you have been very brave to come and share this about yourself, especially to people you may not know. I would love to hear your story, if you wouldn't mind to share it."
It was now he'd look up at the rest of the group, hoping to involve them further in discussions. "In fact, I'd love to hear all of your stories."WC: 281 | Interaction: @Tesla Stone @Anna Blackrose @Marius Brown @Alan Vanes @Lindsey Springhall

A Step Towards Unity
As more and more students filtered in and found their places around the room, Anna was feeling more and more lonely. She guessed most of these people knew each other beforehand so naturally they would gravitate towards one another. Just when she was contemplating on joining one of the other groups, a boy in quite formal clothes, with short brown hair approached her and slightly nervously asked if he could join her. Anna smiled: “Of course. Make yourself comfortable”. Anna outstretched her hand. “I’m Anna Blackrose. First year Ravenclaw. It’s nice to meet you”.
Not much after another person joined them, not saying anything just giving a little nod. Anna waved a bit in return. He was pale with glaring red eyes, Anna should have been at least surprised but instead she felt rather relaxed in his presence. He did look familiar though. Doing a quick scan of the room she noticed another boy that looked the same as the one before her. ‘They must be twins’, Anna was contempt with her reasoning and the fact that she already figured out where she wound him familiar from. He also had a beautiful cat on his shoulder, Anna smiled at the cat and just as she was about to compliment it another girl joined the group.
She introduced herself as Lindsey, and she had beautiful long hair. She beat Anna to it and complimented the cat. “I was just about to say that”, Anna giggled. “What’s the cats name?”, she added. Then she turned to Lindsey and introduced herself as well. “I’m Anna Blackrose it’s nice to meet you”. Anna was enjoying this pleasant atmosphere and she wondered if any of them had any abilities. Since none of them said anything Anna wondered if they weren’t comfortable enough to share it. She hoped that wasn’t the case because she believed with all her heart that everyone should be treated with kindness.
Then in a flurry of yellow a girl with short hair bounced over to them and plopped down on the couch. She introduced her self cheerfully, and waved at them. Anna noticed a big scar on her wrist and involuntarily flinched a little. ‘That must’ve hurt’, was her first thought. Then the girls voice began shaking slightly and she stated that she was a werewolf for two years now. Oh. Anna saw as the girl lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers. Anna thought she would be wary of the girl, thanks to her parents warnings, but right now all she saw was a young girl her age in distress. And that she would not allow. “Hello Tes, it’s nice to meet you. I’m Anna Blackrose and thank you for sharing with us”. Anna smiled and reaching over squeezed Tes’s hand, hoping that was alright with her as she gave her a comforting smile.
Another voice chimed in, it was the librarian. He commended Tes in her bravery as well and encouraged everyone to share their stories. Anna didn’t have much of a story to tell today but she really wanted to hear from others. She looked at the librarian again and noticed a snake coiled around his shoulders. Annas eyes lit up as she marveled at the sight of such a calm snake. ‘Would it be weird to ask to hold the snake, or at least pet?’, she wondered. But decided to let the snake be for now as she leaned back into the couch cushions and excited to hear what everyone had to say.

Tes was surprised when an adult joined the group, a professor most likely since she didn't recognize him, but it made sense that there'd be a few around to help mediate and help out the groups. As soon as her secret was out in the world and her nerves were rising, the man and the girl next to her, Anna, both thanked her for sharing and remained open and comfortable! She knew logically that everyone here should be here because they believe in unity just like her, but that couldn't shake her nerves. The confirmation of that fact however, had her grinning at Anna and turning her hand over to squeeze her hand right back, the shake in them fading and her affectionate friendliness coming right back in force.OOC Note: Tes doesn't recognize the school's librarian, guessing that he's a random professor she's never met, seeing as she avoids the library for anything other than finding people to befriend or staring out windows.
"Thanks Anna," she said, leaning back in her chair and looked over as the adult spoke about meeting the werewolves of Hogwarts, inviting her and everyone else to share their stories. "It's been so cool that there's more werewolves than just me here at Hogwarts! And it's great to meet everyone here as well!"
As the man playing mediator invited everyone to share their story, Tes spoke up saying, "Since I've kinda already started, I'm happy to talk first for a little bit!" Some of her confidence was simply false bravado, but Tes had learned that pretending to be happy and confident helps you truly feel that way, so with a happy voice with maybe a teensy bit of hesitation she continued, "Like I said, I've been a werewolf for two years now. I got turned, 'cause someone didn't have access to wolfsbane," she hesitated slightly, carefully not mentioning the "someone" that turned her before continuing, "And it wasn't all that painful or anything, I just went sticking my hand places it shouldn't have been! I wasn't too scared of being a wolf, because my Momma has been a werewolf since she was little too, so she was there to help me every step of the way. Sure, there's been a couple people that haven't been too happy about what I am, but my family has some friends just like me and we all spend holidays together and they're all just like every other witch and wizard I know." Tes smiled softly, looking down at her lap and thinking of all the werewolves she'd met just living their lives as best they can. "I'm just really happy I can have an experience like this, with you all being so accepting, 'cause that's something they all never got."
She looked back up, glancing around the group, "But that's enough about me for now! If anyone has anything to share too, that'd be super cool!" She looks over at the snake hanging out with the group as well. "Uh, can I meet your pet snake first, though, sir? Is it a ball python or something?" She couldn't help but admire how calm it was, since she'd seen a pet snake in her primary school's show and tell, but that one hadn't much liked her holding it at all.
