Eleanore ran her fingers over the wrinkled parchment of the crumpled letter in her pocket as she stepped into the courtyard, turning the scrap of paper over in her hand as she glanced around. The letter had arrived at breakfast – it was the first-year’s very first letter from someone besides her mum – and she had been giddy all day. Classes would have usually occupied her mind, but it was a Saturday, and she had grown restless with anticipation while cooped up in the soothing green of her common room.
Watching the owls swoop into the great hall was one of her favorite parts of the day; seeing her classmates chatter over letters or gossip about the latest edition of Witch’s Weekly reminded her of the fuss her own family had made over the daily post, and it helped ease some of the homesickness she was feeling. Though, she couldn't help the jealously that bit at her when her classmates tore open letters from friends back home when she was left with yet another reminder to study hard, dear from her mother.
Having a letter all for herself that made no mention of her homework was, without a doubt, the best feeling she'd had since the Sorting – even if she wasn’t sure who it was from at all.
It had been a simple request to meet in the courtyard at noon today. The signature seemed only vaguely familiar – Ivy Bellamy certainly wasn’t a Slytherin, or Eleanore would have heard the name in the common room at this point – but she knew she had heard it somewhere before. Turning the letters over in her mind, she vaguely remembered letters her mother had sent out the last summer, written in looping letters. Perhaps that was it: party invitations or something similarly routine. Frowning, she found a bench to sit on, smoothing the letter out over her knee to reread the lines one more time.
Eleanore glanced up as the clock chimed. Tapping her foot, the first-year settled back into the bench and scanned the crowd for the witch she was meant to meet.
