Dear Quill Pal
Dear Quill Pal,
For such such a warm day, nothing can seem to warm my spirit. Most people have been nice, but I feel I don’t belong as a muggle born witch among purebloods. I miss my home dearly, even if it isn’t the best place to be for me. But it’s home, the place I grew up. Do you feel the same?

I hope this letter finds you well.

Dear Quill Pal,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Indeed, it is surprisingly warm for September. I greatly believe that purebloods, halfbloods, and muggle borns should all be equal. Having been homeschooled for all my life, I, too, feel out of place. Why, if I may ask, do you dislike home? Home was not only the place I grew up in, but a place I thrived in. Many are not given the good home they deserve.

Should we start with introductions, then? I, perhaps you already know, am Cynthia Beaufort. Like you, I am eleven years old and a first year, though perhaps I act too mature for my age. I have a interest in watercolour, reading, writing, astronomy, and possibly duelling. I would like to join the duelling team, but I am still unsure about my skills. Can you tell me a bit more about you? I would love to know who I’m writing too.

Truly,

Cynthia Mariam Beaufort

Dear Quill Pal,

I’m glad the weather is warm, it has allowed me to explore the grounds better. The Great Lake looks so inviting, don’t you think? Only kidding, of course.

I’m glad you think so, because most people have been giving me stares, most in my own house. I wish they’d see me as an equal among them.

What is homeschooling like? I’ve always gone to public school.

My home was never the greatest place for me. My mum died when I was just a little baby, and so it’s always been me and my dad, until he married my step-mum. My step-mum has favorites in the house, including my step-brother and half brother, and since my dad has always been head over heels for my step-mum, he doesn’t object much. I truly don’t know what he sees in my step-mum, she’s usually grumpy and moody. I suppose she somehow passed her moodiness down to me, I will admit.

I am Ava Winchect, a first year slytherin as you can guess. I don’t really have many passions, other than reading, I do have a soft spot for books. I’ve taken on a knack for transfiguration I suppose, but I always find the homework a little confusing. I would love to be on my house quidditch team, but I’d like to learn more about the sport before.

I hope this letter finds you well.

Dear Quill Pal,

I would certainly hope you’re kidding! The Great Lake is dangerous. My aunt’s friend almost drowned back when she was a student here. And, if you look back into history, might you remember the triwizard games? The creatures down there is terrifying. I suppose Slytherin does have all the best traits of all other houses, but when bravery turns into recklessness, it becomes dangerous.

My parents are more traditional than I would like them to be. They still believes that house elves should be treated worse than I would like them to be. They are still creatures, even if they work for us. My mother had a sad expression when I told her that they are like my pets, and she told me they would never be so dear. Then, of course, is there need for blood purity. Both Mariam, my mother, and William, my father, comes from a long line of pureblood families. I do not know anyone in my family that is a muggle, muggleborn, or even a half-blood! Their parties are always pure-blood only, which makes me sad. I hope that I can have more diverse friends than they.

My mother homeschooled me, though sometimes she invites tutors if she believes it is necessary, it is not. She is a, perhaps even fearfully, intelligent. Yet, she is too arrogant, regarding herself with too high esteem. Of course, being the (somewhat) esteemed author she is, perhaps that is understandable. (And, of course, I must admit that I am not the most humble myself.) You ask for the details of homeschooling? My schedule is very flexible, but I preview materials I will learn at Hogwarts with my mother. Of course, we only started the Hogwarts curriculum preview a year before I came here. We did Beauxbatons before that, because Mariam always believed I would go there — at least that was before William convinced her not to send me there. Being homeschooled, I could always choose the way I learn, and I know many can’t, so I do feel privileged.

Your mother’s death most have saddened you. I have no siblings, but my mother does go head over heels (not romantically, though, of course), when my friend Sophie comes over. She moved over to France with her mother, Rose, and I had never seen her since. We write letters, but I miss her dearly. Lately, though, she is not responding, I wonder why. I hope that I had not weakened our friendship. My father had always described her feelings towards Mariam at love at first sight. They might in Paris, and my father moved there fore a while. At that time, my mother was a teacher and my father was an auror. After my mother knew that she would have me, she moved to Oxford with William and focused more on writing (she already was an author, but she only wrote in French and only for fun, publishing one book at that time). William started to work in the ministry.

Transfiguration has always been hard for me. In my heart, I am a deceptive child, or at least more deceptive than I would like to be. I am adaptable. I, too, have a love of books and all things intellectual. That is why I believe I am fit for Ravenclaw. Yet, there is a feeling at the back of my mind, that pulls me towards Slytherin. I do not want to be a Slytherin. My father was from a long line of Ravenclaws (I believe only two Slytherins in eleven generations; all others are Ravenclaws). I had been raised in a strict family, and pleasing my parents is not unimportant. But, truly, I fear to become a Slytherin. I do not know the reason. As for Quidditch, our family has always regarded it as a frivolous sport, though I do not believe so. They think that it is simply absurd, because the other balls are just a distraction for the seeker. They detest and abhor being distracted. They are focused, and so am I. Still, it is interesting to me. I love all the energy and how everything happens so quickly. While my father was a broom racer, he always thought that Quidditch was extremely overrated.

Truly,

Cynthia Mariam Beaufort

Dear Quill Pal
Dear Quill Pal,

I’m so glad it’s the weekend, I have felt so weighed down during the weekdays that I had no free time. I hope I can catch up on some of my homework.

I will ask, how much damage can a lake have? I cannot even imagine anything lurking under the surface, it looks so calm. Wouldn’t it be nice to just go float around in the lake for awhile. Not a pool party, but a lake party?

So you were always a little cut off from life, always hanging out with people your parents deemed acceptable? Did that make you feel any different coming into hogwarts. I’m sure I’m going to regret asking this, because the answer might be glaringly obvious, but what’s a house elf? My brain only wanders to the elves in the North Pole who make our toys and ████████████████.

Do you feel you are at advantage with your homeschool knowledge prior? I do truly wish I had gotten some magical books to read earlier on, so I could understand a little better. I feel so behind whenever I have class with my fellow slytherins or when a ravenclaw answers a question and I’m still working through what the question means.

What are the other schools like? Is there reasons some would be better than others? I’ve heard talks of students receiving letters from students of other schools, and I’ll admit I still don’t know a single name from them.

I’ve gotten behind on my reading, and between me doing homework and trying to figure out this magical world and keeping up with my own series, it’s exhausting. I’ve more than once fallen asleep with my book still in my lap. I think a few people in the common room have started calling it my room with how often I fall asleep there, but I wouldn’t know.

I know I should be sad for my mothers death, but it’s hard to be sad for someone you know nothing about. My father can tell me whatever he likes about her, but those will always be his memories and not mine. If I’m being truthful, the only thing I remember that’s truly mine is her lullabies and stories. Every night, before I fell asleep she would sing lullabies and read me nursery books to help me fall asleep. I don’t really remember any of the songs or stories, just a slow lilting voice, both when she was singing and reading.

Do you ever miss your friends from home? Like Madame mystère your old friend who doesn’t write. I can’t help but wonder why. Could it be your fault? Hers? Or someone else?

I barely understand the transfiguration lessons, they are a complete mash of jargon and magical words, but I can preform the spells almost effortlessly. I have no idea why, but I intend to find out.

Coming into the school, I had heard much from other students on the train about the houses. I remember thinking 'not slytherin, not slytherin' yet here I still am. It must serve some purpose, or I would be in a different house writing a different letter.

I hope this letter finds you well.

Dear Quill Pal,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I agree. Making friends have never been easy for me, yet at Hogwarts they seem even harder to find. I’ve made some surprising ones though. I thought I was friends with the girl I met on a train, but turned out I was wrong, she never contacted me since. I don’t think we were that close anyways, but it still saddens me.

Swimming in lake (without permission, that is), is breaking the rules, something my family is very hesitant to do. Of course, on my father’s side, there is a tradition, that once you fall in love/have a crush that is both ways, you have to take the other person to Hogsmeade, regardless of their and yours year. I’ve always thought this was silly, but I promised my father that I would if I truly came upon someone I like. Still, I do not think a lake party would be appropriate.

Yes, you could describe it as such. My parents deemed most people inappropriate, so my social circle was a bit small. Of course, I did not mind this, for I was extremely introverted back then and still am introverted now (but not as much). After coming to Hogwarts, I found so many more people that deserved much better, even though my parents would not have deemed them as acceptable. Like you. I do not think they would accept you with open arms at first. But they are not too stubborn, they do change, only slowly. A house elf, for your information, is a servant, except they’re an elf. We have them at Hogwarts; they work in the kitchens mostly. My apologies on not explaining that earlier. What were you about to write? You crossed it out; I am awfully curious.

No, at least not extremely so. I only did about half a year of the Hogwarts curriculum. Since Sophia, or Mademoiselle (as it should be mademoiselle, since she is unmarried) Mystere, as you call her, left for France, I was deeply saddened and could not study properly. Still, my scores are, at the very least, an E. I have not yet gotten an A, not even in Transfiguration, which I am worst at. I am, and happily so, averaging a score of O. If you need any help, do not hesitate to reach out, whether through owls or in person. I would love the latter, for I have not yet seen you.

I only know Beauxbatons well. They teach more art subjects, if it could be described that way. I believe the overlap with muggle subjects is larger, but not by much. I’ve always wanted to go to Beauxbatons, it just seemed so romantic. In addition, I would love to be in the same school as Sophie. The day Sophie left, I begged my mother to go, too, when I turned the proper age. But my father and her have already decided: I was going to Hogwarts, period. Hogwarts is often viewed as the best school, but I think that Beauxbatons, Hogwarts, and Drumstrang are equally well. As for the others, I do not know them well.

Yes, I miss Sophie so! She used to write, but now she does not; I wonder why. I have sent three letters and received no reply. I told my mother, but she said that her connection with Rose, Sophie’s mother, was stable. Rose said Sophie was very busy, and Mariam told me not to distract her. Still, that must not be the reason. I feel betrayed: like they’re lying to me or concealing the truth. Honestly, I don’t know what to think. I can’t say for sure who’s fault it is. I’ve remained nice to her, so I can’t see why it would me mine. But I cannot think of any reason. There is always part of my brain that haunts me; what if something happened to her?

You do? There’s only one possible reason I could think of: you’re a metamorphmagus. Even I have trouble believing it, but, I advise you to think about this possibility.

Dear Quill Pal,

Strange that you’ve never heard from her again. The girl I met on the train has become one of my closest friends. Most people here are nice but they seem to already have friends and are not interested in meeting me. I sometimes wonder if that’s because I am muggle born.

You’ve been outside near the lake, haven’t you? It looks so serene without the people in it. What kind of rule keeps people out of such a nice place? Surely not one I’d follow.

Your tradition is intriguing, and wonderful, and it makes me wish I had one I could follow. I mist ask, have you seen any cute boys? I haven’t yet but I have my eyes peeled.

I was going to write a muggle book series I recently started reading, Keeper of The Lost Cities. The main character is an elf and she originally thinks she is a human. She can read minds too. I hate to ask, but can house-elves here do that?

Not much of a house for the house elves is it. More of a castle. A big castle at that. That never stays the same, which can be very exhausting.

I don’t know French, I had to think long and hard about that one. It’s hard not having cell service or Wi-Fi here, isn’t it? Wish I could’ve googled it. OOC: my character doesn’t know wizards don’t use those type of devices.

At home I was top of my class and now it seems I’ve settled for a E at best. We could meet together, what do you think? At the library maybe, and do a study session? Probably on potions if I’m being honest. I might’ve exploded a potion in that class a few weeks ago…beside the point that I could probably study up on that subject.

This might be the sort of thing that would deem me as a bad influence, but you should be more firm with your mother or figure it out yourself. Surely they wouldn’t keep something from you if it weren’t important. It makes me tingle with excitement just writing this, the kind you would get from reading a good mystery book.

I feel more and more dumb as I write this, but what is a metamorphmagus?

I hope this letter finds you well,
