The Great Picnic
Finally the long awaited weekend arrived. Anna got up with the sun and started getting ready. Picking her favourite book took her all night, but she finally settled on “The tales of Beedle the Bard”, it was a classic fairytale collection, it was the first book her mother ever read to her. Of course she was a bit too old for it nowadays, but she thought Amaris would enjoy it. Putting it in a little basket she found in one of the closets, along with a deep blue blanket, she ventured to the Great Hall and picked up some food. It was still quite early so she figured Amaris would still be in the Gryffindor tower.
Skipping down the grass path towards the lake, Anna enjoyed the morning breeze. Arriving at the lake she set up the little picnic with all that she brought. Settling down on the blanket she pulled out her book and softly caressed the spine. The book itself was old and not in it’s prime condition, but she loved it none the less. Opening the first page she smiled at her fathers handwriting. “For my one and only rose”. This book was the first book her mother read in English, it was a present from her father on one of their many dates. ‘Mom spent days and nights trying to read this book until she finally completed it, it holds so many precious memories’, Anna reminisced about all the nights she begged her mother to read her this book.

The Great Picnic
The weekend finally arrived and Amaris certainly hadn't forgotten her and Anna's plans to meet up. It had been quite difficult to choose her favourite book but eventually she chose to bring a book titled “The Golden Compass”, the first book of a three part trilogy. The book showed signs of ageing being quite old though it was clear it had been well taken care of. It had some darker themes and violence but she had enjoyed the book and had reread multiple times. Hopefully, Anna would like it as well. Amaris proceeded to head to the Great Hall to collect some food. Some students were around, though not a lot. She didn’t remember whether or not they were both meant to bring food and it was better safe than sorry. Grabbing a napkin, she piled some food into it.
Amaris strolled on the grass path, both hands clutching an item. It seemed that Anna had already arrived and Amaris hoped that she hadn’t been too late. She sat down on the carpet, placing her book and the food down. She noted the fine weather with the light breeze and warm rays of sun. It was exactly what she would’ve imagined for it to be like in a picnic. “Uh, hi Anna.” the girl said, accompanied by a small wave.

Anna was so lost in her memories that she didn’t even realize that Amaris sat down next to her, until she greeted Anna. “Oh, hi Amaris”, Anna smiled and turned to her, “Sorry I was thinking. I see you brought your book as well. Do you want to read now, or shall we eat first. I haven’t really had breakfast yet”. Anna played with her hair.
“By the way I found out what your name means”, Anna said excitedly. “It actually has two meanings, one is ‘Promised by God’ and the other is ‘Child of the moon’. I think they are both really cool meanings. O. and before I forget, this is my favourite book”, Anna carefully gave Amaris the book. “It’s from my parents and it’s very precious to me so please take care of it, okay? It’ a collection of wizarding fairytales, I hope you like it”.
Anna smiled and then noticed all the food they brought, her stomach growling. “Huh, I think it’s time that I eat my breakfast”, Anna smiled sheepishly and took one of the sandwiches. "You can start reading, I won't mind". She looked at the lake and horizon beyond as she ate.

“All good. I haven’t ate yet either so maybe we should eat first.” Amaris suggested, restraining a yawn. She was not a morning person and tended to sleep in on mornings whenever she could. Her gaze landed on what Anna had brought with her, her book and some food all in a basket which was definitely smarter than what Amaris did.
The girl continued to listen as Anna discussed the meaning of her name. She certainly hadn’t known either of the two meanings and was quite surprised that Anna had researched the topic. “I will.” Amaris promised as Anna handed her the book. It was a bit worn, signalling its age though it was clearly well taken care of. She always made sure to take care of other people’s belongings, whether it was important to them or not. She read the title, finding the book was one she hadn’t heard about before. The book sounded interesting, although rather humorous considering where they currently were. In turn, Amaris handed the book she brought to Anna.
As Anna reached for a sandwich, Amaris did so as well. She shook her head as she spoke. “I’ll start eating as well.” Her gaze wandered to the scenery around her.

Anna saw how carefully Amaris took her book and smiled, relieved. In turn she took the book Amaris brought and read the blurb at the back. It was about a girl their age and, daemons? Anna never heard of such creatures. She’d have to research them. Unless. As she was still chewing on the sandwich she swiftly swallowed and asked. “What are daemons? Are they Muggle pets? Are you Muggle born? Oh, we should definitely compare the two worlds, I want to hear how you get around without magic. Is there something you’d like to know?”. Anna realized she asked too many questions at once, so she smiled sheepishly.
“Sorry, I’m not usually this chipper in the morning, but”, she took a deep breath, “There is just something about this place that makes you feel happy and welcome, no matter who you are”. With a serene look on her face Anna started talking about her family. “My father used to go to Hogwarts, and he taught me a few of it’s secrets. But he said it’d be better if I discovered the rest on my own. My mother attended Beauxbatons, she loved it there, in France I mean, but she loved papa even more. So they ended up here. What about you and your family?”. Anna finally looked back at Amaris, feeling like she was talking too much, but she felt comfortable around the girl. She already considered her a good friend.

Amaris was surprised at the questions that Anna asked, though she supposed it was only natural that she was curious. She had to admit, Anna thinking daemons were real was humorous, and a small smile appeared on her face. She hesitated before answering, slightly overwhelmed at the amount of questions. “Uhm, daemons are just a thing in the book. They don’t really exist. And, uh, yeah. I’m Muggle born.” she replied before continuing, trying her best to answer all of the questions “There really isn’t anything I want to know.” Amaris said, shrugging. After all, how could she ask questions about a lifestyle she had no idea about? It would be comparable to asking a color blind person what they wanted to know about colours, they wouldn’t even know where to start.
She was pleased as the onslaught of questions stopped. She nodded. “It’s all good.” Amaris continued to listen as Anna talked about her family, taking bites of her sandwich everyone once in a while. She was glad that the other girl was taking the lead in the conversation, she had never been skillful at finding things to talk about. Apparently, there were other wizarding schools as well, though she should’ve expected it. Unlike her, Anna’s parents were wizards and witches. Did Anna get a head start casting spells and stuff? “Oh, my father’s family immigrated to the UK, and he was raised there and then met my mom.” she answered, feeling that her story wasn’t half as interesting as Anna's.

The Great Picnic
Anna picked up some fruit as Amaris talked about the book and everything else. Turns out daemons are fictional, and Amaris is Muggle born. Anna nodded a few times, enjoying her fruits. “Oh, what was it like to find out you can do magic. In my family it was a time for a celebration, and we threw a big party. It was amazing! I don’t suppose that it was like that for you”. Anna wiped her hands on a napkin she brought, and picked up the book looking at the artwork on the cover. Tracing the lines she imagined how it was painted.
“Do you have any hobbies? Other than reading that is”, Anna giggled a bit. She decided to start reading the book so she opened the first page, still listening to Amaris’s answers. She wasn’t fully English either. Anna has met more people that have shared ancestry than fully English people. She didn’t know if that was a good thing, sure anyone could go to Hogwarts, but what about the other schools. Did they have any restrictions? Anna decided that she wanted to travel the world, and the more she read ‘The Golden Compass’, the more she was sure in her decision.
"Say, if you could go anywhere in the world right now. Where would you go?"

The Great Picnic
Amaris finished her sandwich, wiping her hands on a napkin. When Anna had found out she could do magic, there had been a party thrown. Did everyone with wizarding parents celebrate that occasion? Didn’t children from wizarding families always inherit their magical abilities? Maybe she would have to ask someone later. She nodded before speaking. “Yeah. My family honestly didn’t even know I could do magic until a professor delivered my letter. And then they didn’t really celebrate it either.” she said. Even when her parents did know, they weren’t exuberant about the fact either, just skeptical about the whole thing. On the other hand, Amaris had been ecstatic. What eleven year old wouldn’t be if they realized they could do magic?
“Uh, I do play the violin.”Amaris replied. “What about you?” She picked up Anna’s book, reading the contents page. It sounded interesting, quite similar to the Muggle fairy tales she had read. “The Tales of the Three Brothers” particularly caught her eye. She flipped to the first story and began reading. She lifted her head up as Anna asked her a question. “Hmm, I’m honestly not too sure. Maybe…Greece?”Amaris answered, shrugging. She didn’t really have a specific place she wanted to go but she had seen pictures of Greece before with the impressive architecture and sparkling beaches.

Anna smiled sadly, she expected that the Muggle borns don’t get parties, but it was still a shock how different they were compared to each other. She got comfortable on the blanket laying on her stomach and flipping the pages.
“Oooo, you play violin!”, Amaris’s hobby caught her attention, “That’s amazing. I never had much talent for music. My mother did try to make me learn how to play piano, but it just wasn’t working for me”. Anna leaned on her elbows. “I like to draw, sometimes paint with my nana. I’m still not that good at it, but it’s fun to mix and match colours”. She smiled at the fond memories. Getting back at her book she started picturing different characters as people she has met before. ‘Would there be a character like Amaris?’, she wondered to herself.
Amaris picked Greece as her destination to travel to. “Greece is beautiful”, Anna nodded, “I think I want to travel the whole world”. She giggled at her own childish dream. “But first things first, France. I want to visit the whole France, not just the place where I was born. I have cousins there so we visit sometimes, so I’d like to travel anywhere else”. She soon stopped talking, drawn into the book before her. Anna never had much patience for anything but books, she could read for hours not noticing the passage of time, but for anything else her attention span wasn’t so great.

“Music isn’t for everyone.” She shrugged. Getting into it was hard, like learning a completely different language. It had taken her a while to master the basics. “That’s nice. I’ve never had an eye for art.” Amaris replied. In her old school, it had been mandatory to attend an art class. Needless to say, she wasn’t very good at it nor had much interest in it. As she started reading again, she started wondering if the tales were real stories or not. Anything was possible with magic, so Amaris couldn’t see why not. However, they were similar to the fairy-tales she had read growing up, albeit a bit more gruesome. Perhaps they were just stories, she thought.
Anna wanted to travel to France, before exploring the world. It wasn’t that unrealistic, considering how she was a witch. Couldn’t she teleport or something? Surely there was some type of spell for that. “It would be cool to travel the world. You could see what the different cultures are like.” she mused. Travelling the world would be an interesting experience though that idea had never come to mind before. “Also, isn’t there some spell to make travelling quicker?” Amaris asked, hoping she wouldn't embarrass herself with her cluelessness on the wizarding world.
