One plus one equals collision
November 17th, 2022 | @Damion White
Nine minutes left, and Lindsey was running down the corridors. She had just had Transfigurations and was now racing down for Herbology class, even if it wouldn’t be starting the next minute. Planning to have a little conversation with the professor, Lindsey was indeed in a hurry. She had calculated the time precisely, and the result showed that she couldn’t fulfil her wishes if she didn’t run - and so she did, backpack on her shoulders and hair fluttering in the breeze she caused while running. Being a perfectionist, Lindsey had her words during the conversation practiced in her head, even though it might be brief. Considering the content thoroughly and making a few editions while noting them to herself, she went forward, her footsteps light.
Everything went perfectly fine and was in her control, she was glad of it, and that was until -
She fell to the floor.
This came perfectly accidental, when she and someone crashed into each other. She had never bumped into someone before, she wasn’t a careless person at all. And today, it was no exception - at least in Lindsey’s mind, she was watching where she was going! The collision didn’t seem to say so though, forcing her to stumble to the ground. But hey, this was weird. She didn’t even know if they bumped into each other face to face or she stepped on his feet from behind or vice versa. What she did know was that her bottom hurt, and her things were spread on the floor - which meant she had to gather them, and her hope of talking with the professor before the class was probably dashed into pieces. She soon decided it was entirely the other person’s fault - she now recognised the one, some Ravenclaw in her year, under the last name White? That was even worth, for she thought Ravenclaws were smart enough not to step on others’ foot. So she got up (with some difficulty, for the crash did hurt), stared at the person and scolded. “Why, aren’t you paying attention to where you are going?”

Damion may have been late for his class too but he was not sure what had him so distracted that he had not paid any attention to the clock on the wall. Anyways he was hoping that his professor of the class that he had to attend, ergo Defense against the Dark Arts, would not notice that he was tad late for the class. Shit! How could he have let this happen? He was walking through the corridors of the Castle trying to get to where his class would be held. He was carrying his books and notebooks in his hand. He had carefully placed each notebook and had even kept a quill for his notes that he would need to write down. He was rushing down the hall not paying much attention to where he was going. He was bound to hit someone or something. As it was the only logical thing that would happen.
And like he had predicted he bumped into someone. Oh no! He thought. He was already getting late for his class and now he would be even more late than earlier. He looked at the person he had bumped into. Damn! It was a girl in his year. How could he so careless? He should have paid more attention to where he was going right? But it was too late now. He was about to say sorry but when he heard what she had to say, he swallowed thickly. "I agree that I was not seeing where I was going. But neither where you. Otherwise we wouldn’t have collided." He said. He was trying to be as gentle as he could be. He was really angry at her for scolding him this way. Yes agreed it was partially his fault that they bumped into each other but it was partially her fault too. He was not going to accept that he was the only one at fault here. He was not going argue much about it either as he was in a rush to get to his class but he was not sure of that was going to happen anytime soon.

Lindsey shrugged while organising her things as quickly as she could. White (she was now quite sure of his name; her brain always ran faster when she got annoyed) was obviously quibbling. She was going forward in perfectly okay way - maybe a little fast, she could admit that - but apparently in the normal range. She wasn’t looking at her toes or trying to spot something outside the windows - she held her chin high, just like what she used to do. And how come this boy, plausibly demanding her to confess something she had never done?
“Oh, really?” She raised her voice a bit, the usually mellifluous tone switching into a sharp one. “I thought it was me who fell to the floor.” She winced. Gah, it did hurt. Why Hogwarts couldn’t invent sort of a magic to make the floor as soft as cotton at the moment when someone fell down and hit the floor? Her elbow was possibly bruised, nicked even, and that was all White’s fault. “I’d say that you shouldn’t have showed up at the very beginning.” If he did not turn up, they wouldn’t have collided; if they hadn’t bumped into each other, she wouldn’t have wasted her time here quarrelling with him - even though she wasn’t very likely to be late for class, Lindsey did wish badly that she could have her little talk with the professor. And now he had ruined everything. Without an apology.
Generally speaking Lindsey was an easy person most of the time, but she could be a highly threatening figure when she got on her nerves. Today she obviously wasn’t feeling very well. In her mind Ravenclaws were well-mannered, witty individuals just like her mother, but this boy chose to scold her for something she had never done. She requested a “sorry”, which shouldn’t be unreasonable or inappropriate. She raised a brow at the boy, the usually warm chocolate brown eye-colour turning a bit icy. Lindsey went into a silence, and waited to see how he would act.

Dami was not sure how to act. He was not this type of a boy. He usually friendly. Some would say that he was one of the friendliest students around but being out and messing things up like he had done right now, was another part of him. Sometimes he would get angry and let his rage get the best of him. He was not this type of a boy who got angry this quickly. But this girl had made him angry. He was really annoyed by her. He was not sure why- but it was pretty much had to do with them bumping into each other.
"Yeah!" He said frowning. He was really angry at what was going on. He was already getting late for his classes as it is and he didn’t have much time to argue with someone. "So get up. What’s the big deal?" He said looking at her. He was being not very nice to her. He was not caring about it at all. He didn’t have any sympathy for anyone else it seemed right now. He was running on anger or so it might look. He didn’t want to be run by guilt for hurting someone. "I can say the same thing for you. Miss. If you hadn’t showed up, we wouldn’t have collided and I’d be on time for my class." He said. "And now because of you, I am gonna be late." He said looking at her and frowning. As to let her know that he was very angry with how things were going to be honest.
"Are we done now? Can I go to class before I end up with a detention thanks to you?" Damion said looking at her. He was not going to be the boy who ended up in detention because he bumped into someone and she seemed to want to argue with him. He was not sure what was going to happen but he hoped that this would come to an end soon. "Helloooo!!! I said something!" He said clearly getting impatient.

White was now bubbling a lot. Lindsey’s head hurt hearing him squeaking and squealing, and all she did was to hold her books as tightly as she could. No, she did not want to be pushed to the floor again. Hogwarts was wealthy enough to build extravagant corridors, but it was hard when cracked with bones. Her body definitely wasn’t as strong as the time when she could easily swap a Bludger away as a Quidditch beater. Duelling had raised her endurance with spells. But not iron balls nor hard floors.
Though despite all this she was sure that White hadn’t included a “sorry” or “I apologise” or “how are you feeling” in his long moment of eruption. Maybe he hadn’t got them in his dictionary even, thought Lindsey. She frowned at his impatience, feeling even more annoyed at his impoliteness and carelessness. “Yeah, I think you did have said something.” She shrugged, leaving his other words alone and paying no attention. It had been long since she last quarrelled with somebody, and Lindsey suddenly felt that she was no longer good at it. No longer good at being smiley. And yet no longer good at being angry as well.
She remembered when she sarcastically ridiculed Mercury or Ivy, at that time she was vigorous about such things and could speak ironically about the other person from the ring of bell to the end of the class, without even repeating the same thing twice. The other one, on the other hand, was also sarcastic enough to be a rival of hers. And now? She was pretty sure that she and White were both no (longer) experts on such things. “I’m tired.” She lowered her chin, looked at him and admitted, openly and honestly. “Although I still somehow feel uneasy, I think I’ll just take my leave.” That was enough. She was really feeling exhausted.
