A redheaded fourth year wandered the school grounds, crunching through the snow as he thought about his future fifth year. He was almost old enough to become an animagus and it thrilled him. Though he had been taught about animagi during his third year, they weren't actually allowed to try becoming one until two years later and it seemed a bit unfair to get students excited for nothing. Still, Jack had taken a look at the requirments for the spell involved and they did seem pretty complicated. There were probably a lot of techniques they had to learn regarding magic before they could attempt the spell.

Reaching a tree whose branches were bare due to the winter weather, Jack climbed a low bough and sat on it, thinking. He wondered what animal he would turn into if he managed to successfully become an animagus. He had never really been all that interested in animals themselves, but trickster animals in stories fascinated him and he hoped to turn into one of them. The concept that animals could match people's personalities was intriguing, just like how the shape that patroni took was from their caster's happiest memory. How could animals be associated with a happy memory unless the memory was of an animal itself? The idea baffled and mystified him.
