The Perfect Shot.
➵➵It was early morning when Gavin wandered down to the shore, the air bitingly cold and the sun barely breaching the horizon, painting the sky with a beautiful array of colours. His gaze was soft, admiring the view, gloved hands cradling a camera. How have I not come down here before? he wondered distantly to himself.
Snap.
The camera whirred, the image being dispensed. His father had told him that his usual digital camera wouldn't work at Hogwarts. It was a shame. Still, he supposed that the polaroid he'd been given would work just as well.
Sticking that first image in his coat's pocket, the blonde started walking, eyes taking in the surroundings all the while. He took pictures as he saw fit. Snagging one of a particularly interesting tree, the way the water met the cliffs, the mountains framing the sunrise. Each one went into his pocket, tucked away. He would look at them later, back in the comforting warmth of his dorm room. Preferably away from the prying eyes of his dorm mates. It wasn't that he was embarrassed by his hobby, but it wasn't something he liked to share. Photography was very personal to Gavin. It tied together his mother's adventurousness and his father's artistic tendencies. It was through photography that he could be with both of them for once.
When the sun was just about halfway over the horizon, Gavin had the perfect idea for a shot. Before the sun could get any higher, he ran over to a nearby tree, scrambling up through the branches. C'mon... gotta get the right angle, he thought to himself. Roughly shifting against the sharp points of the leaveless tree, he finally got a good angle. Not a comfortable one, if the stick poking into his side was any indication, but a position nonetheless, and that was all he asked for.
Seeing that the sun was almost where he wanted it to be, the boy raised his camera to the sun, one eye squinting shut against the glare. Alright... A few more seconds. Then, snap! Right as the sun made it to that halfway point over the edge of his view. Gavin grinned, grey eyes sparkling as he quickly shoved the newest photo into his pocket.
I don't have much film left, he concluded. But... He turned around in the tree. I'd still like to get a picture of the school like this. The shadows cast by the rising sun were gorgeous if you asked him. For what would probably be the last time that morning, Gavin raised his camera.
Snap.
One more, put in his pocket with the others.
He couldn't stop smiling. Even the long trek back up to the school wouldn't be able to get rid of the happy fog filling his thoughts. Photography really was precious to him, that was for sure.
Can't wait to see the photos.
