Autumn Fun
It was the beginning of November and temperatures were just starting to drop. I made sure to dress warmly as I headed over to the courtyard to wait for my friend to arrive. I watched as the leaves on the trees were changing colors around me. I have always loved fall just for that reason. While waiting for my friend to arrive, I thought it would be a good idea to catch up on some reading for classes as I was a little bit behind. My strongest subject this year is Charms (I've always been good at it). I just finished reading the required chapters and I saw a Ravenclaw girl approach me and hug me. It was none other than my closest friend, Ebony.
"Hello, Ebony! It is so great to see you! I can't believe how cold it is getting! The temperatures seemed to have dropped pretty quickly!" I said shivering a little bit even though I was wearing quality clothes I would wear in winter. "It won't be long before we head into winter especially with how the temperatures are right now" I said laughing. "So, what have you been up to lately?" I asked while waiting for her response patiently while putting away my books into my satchel. I was so glad that I could have a friend that thinks the way I do and can relate to my problems. Ebony was a great listener and has always had my back since the day we met.

Ebony absolutely loved the cold. Winter was her favourite season, but autumn was great, too. She loved the snow, the wind which chilled her to her bones; not because it was too cold, but because she was thrilled to be back in the cold season
It was a bit chilly today, but Ebony usually didn't feel the cold, so she didn't bring out her coat. She so regretted it- the wind blew her hair around, obscuring her face, and her hands felt numb. She rubbed them together and went on her normal stroll around the school, ignoring the fact that she was wearing summer colds and that she was shivering.
When she passed by the Courtyard, she saw her friend, Allison, standing there wrapped in winter clothes, her blonde hair flashing unnoticeable to Ebony. She waved back and hugged Allison, running to her at the sight of her. Just seeing Allison made her feel immediately warmer. "It's great to see you, too! It sure already feels like winter," she laughed shakily, setting her jaw firmly to stop her teeth from chattering.
She looked around the Courtyard. It was even more beautiful during this time of year, with the leaves coating the floor with colour.

Ebony embraced me with a big hug. Her presence immediately put a smile on my face and immediately made me happy. She really did give the best hugs. Getting hugged by someone you truly care about whether it is a family member or a friend, can always brighten someone's day.
I was amazed to see that Ebony wasn't wearing a coat and then, I realized that I have known Ebony for quite some time now and remembered that Winter was her favorite season and she loved the cold. "Speaking of Winter, I am not sure if I've already asked you this but what kind of fun activities do you like to do in the winter? Do you like sledding or making snow angels?" I asked out of curiosity waiting for her to reply.
Whilst waiting for her response, I couldn't help but notice how beautiful the courtyard looked in the winter. I watched as the snowflakes delicately hit the ground and stuck there. I always loved seeing snow falling outside my windows at home in London during the winter time and seeing our whole driveway covered in white. "I am so hoping we have a white Christmas this year. I don't remember the last time I had a white Christmas at home!" I said.

Ebony sucked the inside of her cheek. It. Was. Snowing. She shoved her hands deeper into the pocket of her robes and scrunched her hands together so hard her knuckles turned white. Her toes were numb and she knew without looking that her cheeks were red. She touched her neck for a bit of warmth, drawing away every last bit of it. She wished she had bought mittens from home, or at least worn her coat.
"I love making snowmans. Snowball fights and sledding are fun too, but I didn't have anyone to play with when I was back at home. I practiced making snowballs, though. I also love skiing. I've seen Muggles do it, nearby where I lived, but I have absolutely zero experience in it. I'd love to do it sometime, but I don't think its a sport most people in Hogwarts would do. Maybe Muggle-borns," she said in answer to Allison's question. She didn't really know if the sport was for wizards or Muggles, but all she knew was she'd seen people do it and she had immediately fell in love. The way their hair streaked out behind them when they zoomed down, the way they traveled so fast on those two narrow strips.
Ebony followed Allison's gaze as they watched snowflakes fall to the ground one by one. They looked so detailed and delicate yet so small and tiny in this huge world. The most beautiful thing about winter was the snow. "What's a white christmas?" she wondered aloud at Allison's comment, not having heard this term before. Nobody had ever mentioned it; certainly not her cousin or her parents.

“I love making snowmans. Snowball fights and sledding are fun too, but I didn’t have anyone to play with when I was back at home” Ebony said.
“Wow! Making snowmans are so much fun! Sledding is great when you have an appropriately good hill to use. Unfortunately, my neighborhood isn’t very hilly so I have to go to a park with a good sized hill if I want to go sledding” I said. Ebony also mentioned to me how she has practiced making snowballs for snowball fights and talked to me about skiing. “I’ve seen Muggles do it, nearby where I lived but I have absolutely zero experience in it” she said. “Don’t worry girl. I don’t know how to ski either but it looks like a lot of fun. It seems a lot like sledding except you stand up on skis and use skiing poles is a good way to describe it” I said back to her.
Ebony had mentioned to me that one of the most beautiful parts of winter is seeing snow and I do have to agree with her. When I told her I was hoping for a white Christmas this year, she told me she didn’t know what that term meant as no one in her family knew about it either. I then explained to her what it was. “Basically, a white christmas is when there is snow on the ground or snowing on Christmas morning. It’s quite beautiful but sadly, they don’t happen every year but I think it also depends on how cold it is outside too so that’s something you definitely have to factor in.” I told her as we continued to watch the snowflakes fall. I could sit and watch them fall for hours.

Hearing Allison talking about Christmas and winter activities, Ebony started wondering what it was like to be doing them as a Muggle or as a Muggle-born. They sounded like they had a lot of activities that Ebony hadn't been introduce to before as a Pure-blood. Or maybe she was just never told of them and had nobody to play with. She wasn't sure. It seemed that many Muggle and wizard winter actvities overlapped, perhaps maybe just with a magical touch added to it. It was interesting hearing the activities Allison did before Hogwarts. She nodded along with what Allison was saying.
Allison then explained what a white christmas was; Ebony nodded, mostly comprehending what the girl said. "I hope we have one this year, it sounds amazing, I'd love to see one," she said.
As they continued to watch the snowflakes fall, Ebony said, "Aren't they beautiful? I love watching them falling down. The highlight of every winter, for me." The snowflakes were so delicate, so pretty, yet still so structured and strong. She raised her hand to touch some, but they were too small and melted at the touch of heat. She blinked as a flake landed on her eyelash and melted there.

While I was explaining what a white Christmas was, Ebony nodded intently at what I was saying. She truly was listening to what I had to say. I really enjoyed telling her things about what it is like growing up in a Muggle community. Even though she isn’t a muggle born, she truly gets me and understands me like a good friend does. When I was finished talking, she said “I hope we have one this year, it sounds amazing, I’d love to see one”
We sat and watched the snowflakes fall. Pretty soon, we were attempting to catch the snowflakes but they melted every time they fell in our hands. I stuck out my tongue to see if I could catch one that way but that ended up failing miserably because it melted on my tongue too.
“So Ebony, do you have any plans for the new year? I’m hoping for next year, I should participate and volunteer more in class discussions. I think it would help improve my grades” I said while waiting for a response.

Catching snowflakes with our hands and mouths were all failed attempts, but the snow seemed to have no problem sticking onto her clothes, causing them to be specked with white. She was no longer freezing, maybe because she was now in the company of Allison, or maybe it was just that she had warmed up and had gotten used to the weather. Nevertheless, she rubbed her hands together to get some heat in this frosty temperature.
"Your plans sound cool. I wish you good grades this coming year," she laughed, then added, "I definitely have plans. I have so many resolutions. I want to... well, I want to say get in trouble, but it's more like break out of my shell and make more friends. Be more social, you know. And maybe get better at Quidditch," she replied to her friend's question.
Ebony sat down on the floor and drew patterns in the sheet of snow layered on the ground; hearts, stars, smiley-faces, smile planted on her face. Her favourite season definitely made the already beautiful Hogwarts more beautiful, being coated in white. She ran a hand through her hair and puffed out a breath. It billowed out as a cloud of smoke, showing how cold it really was.
"Are you planning on playing any sports?" she asked Allison, "duelling, quidditch, broom racing..."
Deep down inside, she really hoped her friend would consider playing Quidditch. It would be so cool to play in a match with her.

Soon, the snowflakes began sticking to my clothes and to Ebony’s as well. Ebony mentioned to me that she wanted to get out of her shell which I thought was great because it’s important to have great friends in life.
Ebony then began drawing things in the snow and I couldn’t help but join in because it looked like a lot of fun. I sat down next to her and started drawing in the snow. I was never really good at drawing but it was the fun that mattered.
“Are you planning on playing any sports like dueling, broom racing, or quidditch?” Ebony asked. “Maybe. I haven’t really thought about it because I’ve been so focused with my getting my grades to improve.” I said responding to her question. I have attended a lot of the quidditch matches at Hogwarts but I never knew Ebony was on the Quidditch team. “I hope to come and watch you play quidditch sometime. Who knows. Maybe you’ll spot me in the stands cheering you on” I said excitedly while brushing the snowflakes off my clothes and gloves.
“Brr. It is so cold outside. I wish we could build a fire but I don’t see any fire pits anywhere” I said shivering a little bit. “This goes without saying but I can’t wait for spring when it’ll be warmer. I’m not a fan of the cold” I said. I watched as Ebony was shivering too. I could tell she was cold because she was rubbing her hands together to try and stay warm.

im so so sorryAllison proceeded to join her as she drew more figures in the snow, from stickmen and women to apples and oranges. In reply to her question, Allison said she was focused on getting her grades to improve so she hadn't joined any yet. Ebony nodded, in thought. Grades had never been a priority to her. At least not yet. To her, sports, and creativity were a more important aspect in her life, but she was still interested of how it was like to be worried about grades right now. Would it stop the creativity and fun?
She grinned excitedly when Allison said she may cheer the team on in the stands, even though she was a second string. Even though she was a Gryffindor, it would be fun if she was on the team and to play against her.
Allison said that it was cold. Ebony agreed and breathed onto her hands in an attempt to warm them up, considering going back to her dorms to get her jacket but deciding against it. "You don't like the cold? I normally do, with the beautiful snow and stuff, but I'm just feeling extra chilly and cold today. I think it's because I forgot my jacket," she laughed, rubbing her arms up and down, thinking mournfully again of her jacket upstairs.
