John was a little nervous walking into the pet shop. His family had never been that pressed for money so when his parents had saw the pet store and were told about the need for owls in the wizarding world they were happy to oblige. They wanted John to pick out his own and so they stayed outside and ushered him in. And so, John was inside of the ‘Magical Menagerie’ looking at the different choices for a companion.
He had been greeted by a mountain of a man when he first entered the building and it took all of his willpower not to just run back outside. He wore a welcoming expression so it wasn’t long before John was able to calm down. John would be lying if he tried to say he wasn’t excited. He had always been a fan of birds especially owls and has always wanted one as far back as he could remember.
The had so many options that it was hard to know where to look and there weren’t just owls either. There a multitude of other animals as well, there were some cats, lizards, bunnies, even what seemed to be a ferret. There were so many owls up in their different nests that the collective noise generated was never ending.
John started to focus his attention to the owls closest to him. There were a couple arctic owls, some eastern screech owls and the occasional tawny owl. What did catch his attention was the Barred owl that was off by itself. John made his way over to the Barred owl a little faster than he probably should have but that wasn’t his main concern at that moment. His first glance at the bird and he knew what he wanted.
John stopped in front of it to examine it further. It seemed to be a young male most likely only a couple months old. When the owl looked up and caught John’s eye his resolve was even more absolute. There wasn’t really words to explain it but they just understood each other. It was as if the bird in front of him could peer into his own soul.
John lifted a hand up to stroke the Owl’s feathers and it let him. He didn’t know just how long he was standing there because eventually his parents had walked into the store and pulled him out of his stupor. When asked which Owl he chooses John instantly pointed to the lone Barred Owl. Soon he had a cage some food a new friend.
Him and Merlin would take the world by storm.
