Her mother is a pilot and her father is a flight attendant for the same airline. Her grandparents put a lot of pressure on her to be smart and intelligent just like every other woman in the family. Get good grades, don't be dumb, act mature for your age, pick an amazing career, get scholarships, and be an independent woman until she finds a reasonable husband.
When Mia takes interest in something, she puts her all into it. She tries to excel and continues to be as smart as expected of her. Until she loses interest and wants to move on to something new. The only thing that Mia has stuck with, was magic. Ever since a boring afternoon turned exciting. She was studying, as demanded of her after dinner every day. It was boring for her, repeating the same math drills over and over. It would be more effective if she was told to go as fast as she could, but they discourage that. Mia began to doze off tired and frustrated at the mundane, her pencil slipping from her grasp. She fell asleep to the continued scratching of her pencil on the paper. When she awoke, it was to a scolding. How she shouldn't have fallen asleep at the table and how she shouldn't have scribbled over her math work. But she didn't scribble over her work. One look at the notebook being shaken in front of her confirmed that it wasn't her. She can't draw a flower, she can barely get by in art class so it was impossible for her to draw a flower amongst her math work. The pencil must've moved on its own. That must have been the scratching she heard before she fell asleep.
No one believed her until a robed professor came to their door. They hand-delivered a letter and explained that Mia is indeed magical. She gets to go to a special magic school in the Scottish Highlands. She did everything as instructed, not wanting to mess up but burning to explore and learn. She went to Hogwarts on a train hidden behind a wall and got a singing hat placed on her head. It was expected, and a bit disappointing to be placed in the House of "smart people". She was hoping to be something else for once. But it appears even in the magical world, she is still a smart girl.
