This year the duel's were going to be a lot more even, Jake could tell. This time he had to watch over a duel with some of his fellow fourth year's, which meant that there were going to be a lot of spells thrown around in THIS one. The others his age had gotten very good at dueling, and he knew that the ones dueling today were experts of the chamber. It was kind of exciting in a way, but it would have been a lot more exciting if he wasn't going to have to be keeping charge of it. Watching sounded fun, but if things got crazy he wasn't sure he knew how to step in.
Still, he was going have to do his best, and who knew, maybe he'd even learn something?
"Okay everyone, you all know the rules I know." the small fourth-year said, looking at the lot of them. "So just keep it fair," he said. He had a gotten a lot better at speaking without stammering at these things. Last year he had been afraid just talking with so many people watching, and had been worried what he'd do if somebody got hurt or if people weren't listening. He had gone through a lot though last year, and now this didn't seem nearly as scary as it had before. Perhaps that was because this year he'd been way too nervous about dueling himself to be too worried about doing this. "Good luck everyone!" he said, stepping back and letting the others do what they would. "May the best team win!"

"To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy."~ Sun TzuThe first official duel... and Piérre took a deep breath as he practiced his quickdraw on the side of the match. The boy's fingers twitched as his left side, calming his heart for a moment as he stared blankly forward. His eyes didn't dare flick in any direction, completely numb as if nothing was in his head.
In a split second, his left hand flashed to his right breast, flipping out the yew and snallygaster heartstring wand and pointing it directly at a portrait on the far side of the room in a twinkling. He had been working hard on his quickdraw. Fast reactions saved lives. Fast reactions made sure that you didn't end up dead.
Today the boy wore a thin cotton t-shirt that was of a royal blue hue, wearing a pair of black slacks. He had had a bad time with fire during the summer duel, and didn't want to make it any easier to be set on fire by other people because of what he wore. Green eyes glanced towards Evelynn as he returned his wand to its holster. He smiled. "Heh... like old times, huh?" He tried to jest lightly. "You were a hell of a seeker, you know..." He tried to add delicately. "I'm glad I get the chance to be your teammate again."
This was going to be a rough fight. Two Quidditch players going into a match against two strong duelists... it would not be a cakewalk insofar as being able to match arcane prowess right away...
But Piérre was more than certain that they would have a surprise coming their way once they saw just how well Piérre and Evelynn could work together. They may not have been a part of dueling from the beginning... but they had been teammates on the Quidditch team, a game that required a great deal more communication and ability to read everyone else's body language and projected intentions. In that regard... they had an advantage.
They knew how to work in tandem.
Stepping up to the platform, the boy drew his right leg behind him, placing himself into a sideways stance that narrowed his silhouette from where his opponents were. A deep breath, a final reassuring smile to Evelynn, a glance towards Figaro, who was currently curled up in the spectating benches (anyone feel free to interact with a silver bengal with mint green eyes. He is highly friendly and loves attention/receiving scritches), and the boy readied his aim and steadied his hand.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
Aida strode onto the piste wearing a black coat decked with long-hair shearling fur, and slim black-and-white striped pants. Were the long tendrils of sheep hair flammable? Most certainly. Next question.
Did Aida know their opponents? Evelynn by reputation, yes, as Aida had been the Ravenclaw quidditch co-captain for a time and then continued to observe games thereafter. Piérre? Well… there may have been some relation... whereby the knowledge that they would duel each other influenced the rebellious fashion statement Aida was making today.
Holding an ancient chestnut wand up to sniff it, Aida closed their blue-violet eyes with enjoyment of how it still retained its spicy woody fragrance despite all the mysterious battles it must have been through. The wand was in excellent condition but still bore hints of its past lives, a quality Aida found most rapturous. Since receiving the wand from its previous holder, Valentin Schnell, the white wix’s enjoyment of dueling had blossomed. This would prove a key salvation for Aida in the wake of the departure of their best friend, Alexander Varellion. It had already been bad enough before when his former manipulation target turned love interest, Erin Ryan, had been absorbing his attentions while Aida, like a child who could no longer get attention after the arrival of a newborn, took a stormy turn in their development. Even though their friendship had always been platonic, when Alexander left Hogwarts entirely, it meant the loss of a pillar upholding the stability of Aida’s traumatized mind. In the empty hole he left, Aida put more love into the finer points of magizoology, dueling, and falling in love with their new wand. Now, Aida arrived at today’s duel with exuberance, like opening up their soul again after it had protectively closed up on itself. Were mistakes made during previous interactions with Piérre? Certainly. Today, though, Aida was determined to make things better.
Flicking playful eyes up at Piérre, Aida giggled and did a little spin. With a blind wave at their duelling partner, Thomas, Aida bounced on the toes of soft, black doeskin boots. It was playtime.

(Apologizing in advance. It's wedding week so time and focus are severely limited. It's gonna be short replies.)
The first duelling match of the year would be seen from a very different perspective. Until now, perceptibly steely eyes had always assessed the games from the point of view of the spectators. This year, however, would see the tenured Gryffindor seeker dismounted from her broom to step upon the dais as a duellist. Evelynn held no misconception that she would excel in the same way. While spell casting had finally become something second nature to the witch, the past year had only served to highlight how pitiful that casting was if it could not be effectively applied in a practical situation. Her aim was poor; her timing was off; and on the rare occasion a spell actually landed, her targets seemed to shrug the spell off almost without notice. It wouldn't do.
Historically reticent to step into the ring, she had finally accepted that the only way to improve and prepare for the reality of combat was to enter into its closest simulation. Pride was on the line, but she took some measure of comfort knowing that she had been paired with Pierre—if nothing else, at least there existed a foundation of trust between the two. She could count on him to cover her weaknesses and take cues in the midst of it all.
Expressionless, her gaze would wander across their opponents prior to the start of the match, silently sizing them up. She knew neither of them in any meaningful way except to know from observed matches that they were both skilled duellists. The two lions certainly wouldn't be let off easy, it seemed. As Pierre spoke, she inclined an ear towards him without breaking her attention from their opponents. The faintest upturn to a corner of her mouth accompanied a brief and amused hum, and from her sleeve she slowly pulled her wand. Walnut and Wampus, this match would prove to be its maiden debut in the face of combat.

There Thomas stood again, back on the piste after a brief vacation over the summer. Lingering feelings of inadequacy over his perceived personal failings in the international dueling tournament hung over his head—heightened by the fact that Aida was his partner again. She didn’t seem burdened by the sort of feelings he did, however, which emboldened the boy some. Well, it was another duel, hopefully something good could come of it!

The tension before a duel began brought out something different in everyone. Some, like Piérre, a confident smile. Others, like Evelynn, a focused glance at those who would oppose them. Then there was Aida, who... well... Aida reacted to the start of a duel like Jake had never seen before, ever, so you could add giggly spinning to the list too.
But when the duel began, so did the chaos. The quick draw that Piérre had been practicing so dutifully would come in handy, as the boy tried to get the jump on his opponents. A disarming charm, straight at Aida. It made sense, Jake thought. If your opponents had no wands then they couldn't cast, and now that he had stood on the dueling platform himself he knew that sometimes that was the best thing that you could hope for. The spell was on target, and Aida (whose Wind Jinx would just miss its mark) would feel her wand rip out of her hand and hit the ground below. But Piérre's speed didn't extend to his dodging. As great as his opening spell had been, Thomas's fire spell was almost just as quick, and soon Piérre would realize that the cotton T-shirt he had worn was alight, the spell hitting him right in the chest. Jake winced....he wished they could just ban fire spells, but there was nothing that he could do...
Thomas's vision would go dark soon after though, after facing the same trouble as Piérre: It was very hard to fight two opponents at the same time.
Both teams had had a strong opening, and the Ravenclaws had struck first blood, but the Gryffindors had made their mark as well. Perhaps a strategy, perhaps a silent understanding, but both Gryffindors seemed to have had the same thing in mind. Incapacitate the other team. They couldn't duel without their wands, or their eyes, and as the first rally of spells ended, the Gryffindors were left blind and disarmed, and at the Ravenclaw's mercy - that was if Piérre was going to be ok from the flames.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10

Reducio
As Piérre knocked Aida’s favorite wand off to the side of the room, a pointed “HEY!” escaped the wix’s lips. It wasn’t as if the action were all that surprising, but it still grumpled the wix that not only had the jester narrowly dodged the wind jinx, but now everything would have to slow down. Thomas’s flames struck true, however, making Aida wince with the pain that Piérre surely felt. “Ouch, hey, you look nice today! I mean, with, and without the flames. Ha ha ha ha ha! Yeah, that looks painful, sorry.” Why was Aida apologizing to the enemy, perhaps for the first time in the wix’s substantial duelling history? With an awkward smile and a pull on one strand of hair, Aida couldn’t help but feel guilty. Had the chestnut wand subconsciously jerked a little at the end of the wind jinx? Well, it could have been out of a sudden nervousness or a dash of overdramatic gesturing, but it certainly wasn’t out of lack of practice.
“Come on, Thomas! Let’s go! We have to win this one!! You too, keep trying, Piérre. I wore these stripey pants specifically in your honor!” An odd, whinnying laugh emerged from Aida’s throat, cut off quickly with a glance at the other Ravenclaw.
Meanwhile, from the other side of the room, Aida’s owl swooped down into the spectator benches, apparently less than concerned about the duel itself. Instead, the sand-colored bird bounced a few times in the direction of Piérre’s silver Bengal cat. Scheherazade's flame-colored avian eyes watched attentively as she swiveled her head three times in a circle, apparently curious if the cat planned to just lie there like a fuzzy blob the whole time.

Gryffindor vs Ravenclaw: Match 10
The call to start the match came with a flurry of action. All opponents would immediately call forth their incantations. Both eagles went for Pierre—not entirely surprising since he was likely to be the more familiar and likely supposed to be the bigger threat of the two. Evelynn took no offense by it, welcoming the opportunity to strike without distraction. And stroke she would, aiming a well placed obscuro upon Thomas who'd proven himself both capable and slippery in the summer games against the visiting students. Lips upturned faintly with satisfaction as the blindfold secured itself about his eyes. A plume of heat would draw her attention, however. Turning her head, she grimaces at the sight of Pierre in flames. "Are you alright?"

"To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy."~ Sun Tzu"Ooooo, that's a nice wand. Can I have it? Expelliarmus!" Piérre started the show with a jest and a cast of the disarming charm. Striking true while evading a gust of wind that came from Aida, Piérre grinned a bit as his eyes twinkled with amusement.
The crackling of fire in his ear caused the boy to immediately sigh as he realized that he had put himself right into the trajectory of yet another fire spell. With a small huff at the fireball striking him in the chest, the Britalian hissed as fire smoldered across his clothes once again. God he hated this spell! WHY WAS FIRE ALLOWED IN DUELLING?!
Yet, Aida seemed to take it as a jest, as she complimented his appearance. Despite the fire slowly creeping across his clothes, Piérre managed to form a grinning to bear it grimace. "Haha... very funny. I guess this kid is on fire! [Again.]" The last part was muttered to himself.
Green eyes flicking across the situation, Piérre focused on Evelynn's own cast. "HEY! There you go! That's how you do it! You're a natural!" He praised her (despite being an infant to dueling himself). She asked him of his wellbeing. "Well, I'm feeling a bit toasty, but... I'll... be... fine?" His statement turned more into a question than a statement as blisters began to form on his arms once again. Owowowowowow... "I'll figure it out."
And I'm not going to the nurse.
Figaro would fix the barred owl with dilated eyes, the tip of his tail twitching in amusement at the feather blob that was the biggest threat to his brother's mandolin. A creaking purr began to form in the bengal's throat; this owl usually either meant trouble or fun. Having grown up around Piérre, Figaro was not unused to either... and quite enjoyed it, as a matter of fact.Doing as Strategized

“THEY SHOULD BAN OBSCURO, I HATE THIS STUPID SPELL,” came the complaints of the blindfolded Ravenclaw, too aggravated to celebrate his own success. Quite frankly, Thomas felt as of he spent the majority of his dueling career with cloth over his eyes, it was starting to get a little ridiculous! “UGGGGH!! I’m tryin’ t’win, do you think I like not being able to see??” Tom inquired of his partner, clearly whatever nerves he had been weathering before the match began burned off with his tiny (physically, he was still rather short for his age) tantrum about a perfectly fair and valid spell.
