Transfiguration was Alma’s least favorite class. It was basically charms but with extra Science, and Science definitely was her absolute worst subject when she had gone to Muggle school. Though, she still had to exceed, seeing as from a young age she had set her standard for grades and intelligence so high that she would never allow herself to fall behind.

So, here she walked, into the dull, vanilla-smelling classroom. She had no need to sit near the front; perfect eyesight paired with excellent hearing gave no reason to be near the professor. She spotted an empty seat near the middle of the semi-circle next to a nice looking Slytherin girl.

She had gorgeous auburn hair and a constellation of freckles dotting her cheeks. Perhaps the most prominent part of the girl’s appearance, however, was the large stain-like mark on her face. Alma found it quite intriguing and went to sit by her, introducing herself.

“Um, hey! Mind if I sit here?” she asked, trying to hide the crack in her voice from the nervousness. “My name’s Alma Stoll, first-year Hufflepuff.”

The girl could probably already guess that Alma was a first year, aswell as a Hufflepuff judging by the class they were in and her bright yellow robes that weren’t exactly standing out in the sea of yellow and green around them. Although scared of doing anything to upset the girl, she would take a seat anyways, seeing as there really wasn’t any other extras as far as she could see.

“I don’t quite like this class that much…perhaps we could keep each other company before I doze off during the lecture?” she tried to joke. Jokes weren’t really her thing, but she was feeling brave today.

Olivia's eyes darted instantly to the prominent set of ivory teeth approaching her. She reflexively pressed her brow down for a moment, almost startled by the girl's direct approach. She glanced at the spot adjacent her own, verifying she hadn't set any of her belongings on the seat. She only offered a timid nod, taking in Alma's features as she moved to sit beside Olivia.

When Alma's mouth was closed, Olivia's eyes drifted to the thick, blunt bangs hanging over her brow. Her inner monologue, typically more judgmental than she'd care to admit, failed to come up with anything unsavory about the girl's appearance and demeanor. Olivia almost admired the girl's self-assuredness in taking a seat right next to her.

"I'm Olivia," she started, mustering up a little smile. She couldn't help but imagine that a smile would look strange or unnatural on her face, but she held it anyway. "I'm a first-year, uh--" She glanced down at herself for the quickest moment, as if expecting to find the answer on her jumper. "Slytherin!" she blurted, once the word came to mind. "Yours, Hufflepuff, that's the, uh-- The badgers, yeah?" She sniffed, mustering up friendly conversation against all of her isolationist instinct, "Is that, uh-- What's their deal?"

As the class started to hush to a quiet murmur, Olivia lowered her tone and leaned towards Alma, a familial little gesture. "You can borrow my notes, if you wanna snooze," she mustered up the same timid little smile. She couldn't help but punctuate the thought with a less-than-subtle brag, "I've got sciency-brain." She waggled her fingers on either side of her face, a genuine playful little smile spreading on her cheeks.

She sat down, relieved at the quiet nod the girl offered her. Alma saw her smile, a lovely one that complimented her face, and she gave one right back. When the girl, Olivia, had glanced at her robes as if looking for an answer to what her house was, Alma assumed she didn’t know much about Hogwarts. Probably a muggle-born or half-blood.

Well, at least that offers something to bond over. Alma’s own family was divided on the subject, her muggle father’s detesting attitude towards magic contrasting with her mothers want for Alma to go to Hogwarts.

“Hufflepuff? Yeah, we’re the Badgers. I don’t quite know much about us, in all honesty! So much for getting sorted into this house, am I right?” she giggled. She knew much more about Ravenclaws, the only house she had heard of in her own living space due to it being her mothers own. “I do love this house, though. Everyone i’ve met is so wonderful!”

She didn’t add in the part where she basically thought everyone was wonderful, despite their house, but that didn’t matter. She didn’t want her relentless optimism and tiring niceness to make her seem dull. Maybe with this girl she could escape from the “boring” status that she’d pertained all through Muggle school.

“I’ve got sciency-brain.”

Alma let out a chuckle of amusement, quickly covering her mouth in fear the professor would hear her. Once the coast was clear and he just continued with his lecture, she turned back to Olivia with a smile.

“I wish! I’m much more a math person, Science was never fun for me. I was hoping to get away from it when we went to an actual magic school, but, here we are learning about atoms,” she huffed with a playful eye roll.

“Thank you for letting me sit by you, by the way,” she said politely. “You seem like great company! Not sure where else I’d sit, anyways.”
