Kay made her way down to the lake. It had always been her favorite place to read, even though it wasn't the greatest place for a book to be. The amount of times she had to return a book with smudged pages to the library was astounding. When she made it to her favorite spot, she noticed that someone else was there. She walked up close to the person.

"Hey! What's your name?" Kay asked with a kind tone. She had always loved meeting new people. "My name's Kay," She said as she sat down next to the random girl. She pulled a book out of her bag and began to flip through the pages, looking for where she had left off.

Kay read her book silently, making no noise besides the turning of the pages. She had become quickly entranced in her book that she forgot she even started a conversation. She did this quite often. Forgetting that she was doing something because she got lost in a book. Or in a conversation. Or in listening to music. Or anything really, she gets distracted really easily. Honestly, she was suprised that she could even pay attention in any of her classes.

Tesla was startled out of her studying as a girl with brown hair joined her by the tree. "Hi! I'm Tesla Stone, but you can just call me Tes." She thought about making some small-talk about why the girl was here and what she was reading, but the way she immediately settled into silence and started reading made Tesla think better of it.

She did her best to settle back into her studying, but as she finished her snack and the words started to go straight back out of her head the second she read them, she started to squirm. She glanced up at Kay, still absorbed in her book, and glanced back at her own book. Her foot began to tap, jiggling her leg up and down until she finally gave in and leaned towards Kay, hoping to catch her attention.

"Whatcha reading? I'm studying for transfiguration. You readin' something fun or something for class? Do you normally come down here to study? What year are you?" Tesla babbled off a list of questions, hoping Kay would want to talk about any of them. She could fill lots of awkward silences with her chatter, but it was harder to do when people were reading or doing their best not to listen. She was bored, after all, not trying to be annoying or rude.

"That's a pretty name!" Kay said with a smile. It was one of the more unique ones she had heard, though she doesn't know many names. She continued to flip through the pages of her book. It was a book she had read a thousand times, but every time she read it she entered a new world. She preferred fantasy books, which was a bit ironic because she did live every kid's fantasy.

The only sounds that were being made were the turning of the pages, and Tes tapping her foot. Kay didn't notice though. There was the sound of the lake in the background, and it was strangely calming for Kay. She let out a small yawn but soon returned to her book, continuing to flip the pages of the book every minute or so.

When Tes suddenly started talking, Kay jumped. Her hair turned ghost-white for a moment before she took a breath. "Sorry, you scared me." She said closing her book. I'm reading one of my favorite books. I don't need to study. The professors say everything I need to know in class." She replied with a smile. "I have been coming here since the spring of last year, and I am a second year. What about you?"

Tesla gaped as Kay's hair flashed white and she jumped before it to its previous brown color. Kay moved on like nothing had happened, explaining she was reading her favorite book and that she'd been coming to this spot since last year. She was still staring in shock, taking a minute longer than usual to respond. The sounds of students practicing quidditch could be heard in the distance, the lake lapping gently against the shore in the October breeze.

"Uh, I'm a first year. I have a hard time paying attention in class so I have to study with my friend Isadora sometimes," Tesla trailed off, wanting to make small-talk and not seem rude, but curiosity took over and she blurted out before she could stop herself, "Why'd your hair do that? Is there a spell you learn in second year that lets you do it, or is it something else?"

Her eyes were shining, and she leaned forward eagerly, shifting so she was sitting on her knees so she wouldn't fall over. She'd never met someone who could change their hair like that, and it had seemed so natural when Kay did it, almost like she'd done it on accident. If she had, then Tes was excited to learn about how she'd managed it.

Kay put down her book, now invested in the conversation. She noticed Tesla looking shocked at something, so she turned around trying to see what it was. She turned back around when she heard Tesla speak. "Ooooooh," Kay said when she realised, grabbing at her hair. "I'm a metamorphmagus!" She smiled. She wondered how Tesla would react to this information, but she hoped it would be a positive one.

Kay leaned back slightly. "Watch this," She said before pointing to her eyes. Not even a second later, her eyes were bright yellow, similar to a cat's. Her eyes seemed to literally be glowing a bit, but not that much. After a few moments, her eyes returned to their normal dark green. "Whenever I get scared or shocked, my hair or eyes turn white." Kay said kind of grabbing at her wrist. It was kind of embarrassing to admit that everyone knows when she's scared.

"It's not really something you can learn, just something you're born with." Kay explained. "It can be annoying sometimes. If I experience a strong emotion for a long time my appearance might get stuck for a while," She muttered slightly. It was still a fun talent to have, but it didn't come without its downsides.

Kay was a Metamorphmagus, and Tesla couldn't stop herself from gasping and exclaiming, "That is so cool! I've never met a metamorphmagus before!" She couldn't help but light up with a bright smile. It was so cool to be able to change your appearance like that, and Tesla was always excited to learn about other non-human wizards and witches like her. Although, technically Kay was still human, she just was born with a special talent. As far as she knew, metamorphmagi were more accepted than some others, but Tesla bet she'd had some difficulties with it too.

She leaned forward, watching in fascination as Kay's eyes changed color, and were even glowing faintly in the light by the lake. It was so faint Tesla wasn't sure if they were truly glowing or if it was a trick of the light as Kay changed them back to her normal eye color, explaining the change in hair color and looking embarrassed.

Kay explained that strong emotions could make her appearance get stuck, and Tesla nodded along, thinking about how that could be hard. She didn't think it would be embarrassing for everyone to know when she was happy, but it might not be the best if everyone could tell when she was scared or humiliated.

"Is it your hair that always changes when it gets stuck? Cause that's super cool! But I guess it could be a bummer to always have to wear your heart on your sleeve. Not to mention if you don't want someone to know you're a metamorphmagus it's a little bit hard to hide it," Tes thought for a second about how hard her life would be if there was no way to hide the fact she was a werewolf. It was different because she'd heard that sometimes people were suspicious of metamorphmagi, but not so much so that they couldn't get jobs or live in society.

Tes wanted to tell Kay she wasn't a "normal" witch too, but as nice as the second year was, she just wasn't sure she could trust her yet. She could still ask some questions though, test the waters a bit so to say. "Has anyone at Hogwarts judged you for it? Being a Metamorphmagus, that is. Do you know anyone else that's like you here? Different, that is. Not just metamorphmagi. I heard a rumor there's even werewolves here," Tes bit her lip, waiting for an answer. That was subtle enough, right? If Kay turned out to be mean, which Tes didn't expect, she could just pretend she was asking because she was scared. Colin had said everyone he'd told at Hogwarts had been kind and accepting, but he was such a confident person maybe he just got lucky.

Kay saw the smile on Tesla's face, and that made her happy. She loved entertaining people with her talent. "So far it's only been my hair and my eyes that change or get stuck with my emotions so far. When I get older I'm supposed to be able to control my appearance a little more. Right now I can only change one thing at a time." Kay explained. She honestly couldn't wait to be able to actually change her appearance. She was already planning all the cold pranks she could play on people by changing into others.

"My mom always tells me I'm going to be an Auror like her, but I don't know what I want to do yet." Kay sighed. She knew a lot of stuff she shouldn't because of her mom that it would be the best career for her special talent to actually be useful, but she always wanted to do something in a more creative or artistic field. She didn't really like having all of these expectations pushed on her. She loved her talent, but everyone expects her to do something great with it.

"Most people don't judge me for it, but there are certain expectations with it." Kay replied. "I know another Metamorphmagus, her name is Quinn Root. I don't think you would know her though." She smiled a bit at the memory of how they met in the library. "She didn't want people to know that she could change her appearance, which I found quite strange." Kay shrugged. She had always been quite open about her talent.

Tesla couldn't help but think how cool it would be to meet an older metamorphmagus that could change like Kay said she'd be able to someday. Maybe she could just find Kay a few years down the line and ask for a demonstration! Being able to change hair or eye color, even if that was the only thing she could do so far, was super cool. "I heard that some people can completely change to look like someone else, height and everything! Will you be able to do that someday?"

" It's cool that your mom's an auror! It's less cool that she expects you to also be an auror though. I mean, unless that's what you end up wanting to do, but it can be kinda stressful to have that sort of pressure. I haven't even thought about what I want to do with my life! I think it'd be a bummer if I was gettin' told what I should be doing. Both of my mums work on our farm and occasionally do seasonal work, and they just want me to be happy with whatever I decide."

"I've met Quinn! She'd super cool. It is weird that she doesn't want people to know, though. I don't really get it," Tesla frowned thoughtfully, "My mum's a werewolf, and she's super adamant about keeping it a secret so people can't judge her. A lot of werewolves and other special witches and wizards are like that. I like to think time's are changing though, and people would be a lot nicer about stuff like that now."

Kay nodded. "I supposed to be able to. I don't know any other metamorphmagi besides Quinn." She admitted. She had never been able to talk to anyone growing up about her talent. At times it was quite frustrating. Her parents tried to help her in their own ways, but they knew that they could never actually solve any problems. Her mother always reminded her that because of her ability, Kay could grow up to be something great. Her father always told her that she could do whatever she wanted with her talent, that the sky was the limit.

"It's weird having a mum that's an auror and a dad that works in the ministry. Sometimes they are home all the time, and other times they are never there." Kay said with an amused smile. "I think my mum is just really excited to have a daughter that has a special talent. Whenever my mum throws parties, it feels like she shows me off to other people if that makes sense." At the end of every party Kay was always tired from constantly changing her appearance.

Quinn is quite nice. My father always told me if someone doesn't treat me right because of my talent, give them nightmares with it." Kay said with a grin. Of course, he had said it as a joke, but she was gonna pretend it wasn't. "Oh your mom's a werewolf? That's cool!" Her eyes lit up a bit. "Are you a werewolf too?Oh, sorry if that was rude."
