Books, books, and more books
Since she had learned how to read, Dinah had always been an avid lover of books. It didn't matter what it was or who wrote it or even if it was in English. Dinah would read anything. She enjoyed the feeling of the book in her hands and the pages between her fingers. Even better if it had that wonderful book smell that made you feel like you were reading something special. So when she made her way up Diagon Alley, eyes dipped to read the list of equipment she would need for school, and she caught sight of the shop in front of her, she nearly dropped the list entirely.
A large sign hung overhead with the words 'Flourish and Blotts' painted elegantly and an image of a book beside it. Dinah could see through the windows what she would have described as heaven. Stacked from floor to ceiling, across every wall were books, books and more books. Huge books with maybe a million pages bound in leather with their titles inscribed in gold on the side. There were tiny books the size of postage stamps and a book that looked like it would take a chunk out of you if you didn't know what you were doing with it. Dinah saw all this through the window of the store and without even consulting her list, she headed in filled with a new found excitement at what else she might find inside.
It was difficult to know where to begin. It seemed that every possible space had been filled with a tomb of pages filled with information Dinah could only dream of. She ran her hand lovingly down the spines of the nearest books, a stack of blue autobiographies by someone who must have been a famous wizard. She looked in wonder as the image on the front smiled up at her and waved cheerily.
Delving further into the store, Dinah found herself grabbing a copy of almost everything she could fit in her arms. 'The Monster Book of Monsters', 'Jinxes and Hexes:Beginners', 'Death Omens', 'Greatest Wizards of Our Age', 'Quidditch Through the Ages', 'Five Second Potions!' and so many more titles that she couldn't even remember picking up.
Dinah had no idea what half of them even meant but she was so eager to turn those pages and find out all about it. So eager in fact, she couldn't help but pause at the bottom of a set of stairs where she picked up a book about the size of a pocket diary. The cover told her it was called 'Magical Creatures: Rarities and Rouges'. She was struck by the picture on the front which depicted not only a dragon but a unicorn and what looked like a half tiger-half deer creature that surely defied nature.
Feeling happier and lighter than she had done in years, Dinah opened the book and allowed herself to become engrossed in the book, sitting at the bottom of the staircase.
After about twenty minutes, Dinah was interrupted from her reading by a rather impatient tapping on her shoulder.
Reluctantly she looked up at the culprit and found the bookshops assistant stood over her with a hand on his hip.
"Are you going to buy that or are you just reading it? This isn't a library you know." He informed her, matter-of-factly.
She sighed, glancing down at the book. Dinah gave a quick glance to the back of the book which displayed the price and with a heavy heart she placed the book back on the shelf. She needed to make sure she had enough money for the rest of her school supplies.
"I'm not buying it, sorry." She explained to the assistant. "Can you help me find these though?"
She handed him the list of books that she actually needed for school and followed the assistant through the shop to the correct locations, putting the books in her arms back on their shelves in defeat.
I'll definitely be back though, she thought to herself with determination.
