Sometimes, when the castle gets too stifling to bear, a nice long walk around the lake is just what one needs. No distractions, no homework, no nothing. Just a girl walking the walk and thinking the thought. And a cowboy hat, don't forget the old hat.
It's really just a souvenir, one her dad had given to her back when he used to perform shows. Obviously, it's not safe to wear it when riding a horse, but the media always portrays riders wearing them. Ciel doesn't mind though, because cowboy hats are the epitome of cool!
The hat is still too big for her to wear it properly though, and her bag is just a little too small for her to place it into, so she carries it around whenever she's doing some menial tasks. It normally stays in her dorm, though. It's her most prized possession- she can't just go around losing it whenever she wants!
Her fingers drummed along the upper rim of the hat, a beat she made up herself. It's inspired by an old rock song her mum had loved. She played it every Saturday morning- that was how everyone knew it was time for breakfast. The radio would play old songs and give the news during breakfast. If it wasn't for the radio, Ciel would constantly forget what time it is. The only clock in the kitchen is a chicken clock- and Ciel would rather die than look at it.
If there was something she liked about Hogwarts, it was that there were no chickens anywhere. No mean hens or giant ten-foot-tall roosters who had a presence strong enough to kill.
Just thinking of the chickens made Ciel stop and visually shudder. She really could not stand those things!
"Ugh... chickens..."

Cowboy Hat!
Gwen was outside on the grounds, making her way to the Great Lake. It was just after lunch, and Gwen had decided to come out to enjoy the outside. It was quite a pleasant day, the sun shining and the sky blue, and like most times, the weather reflected Gwen's mood. A few other people were outside too, and she decided to walk over to the shade of a few trees and gaze upon the lake like normal people definitely did. It was a great day for lake-seeing, actually. The sunlight shone on the waters, and a dark flash underneath the surface revealed the giant squid. As she was passing a girl a little younger than her, she saw out of the corner of her eye a visible shudder and heard a curse upon... chickens? Gwen really was too curious to help herself. She tapped the girl on her shoulder.
"Um, hi? I heard you mutter something about chickens. I actually thought the chicken at lunch today was quite delicious.... unless you meant live chickens? What's your name, anyways? I'm Guinevere, but call me Gwen."
She waited for the girl's response and hoped she wasn't being very weird by randomly asking someone about chickens.

Though she rarely got stuck in her own head, Ciel could not stop thinking about her hatred for chickens. Especially being at Hogwarts and being a witch. Considering how her first ever magical experience contributed to her fear of them. Her deepest and darkest nightmares consisted of a giant 20-foot-tall chicken overlord, and it was all the magics fault!
Was Ciel odd for hating the cute little birds? No. She was not. She had seen things others at this school would be blessed to never see. The dangers of the flightless birds would be something Ciel had to face alone- no other would be able to witness the sights she had once-
"Um, hi? I heard you mutter something about chickens. I actually thought the chicken at lunch today was quite delicious...."
Oh, good lord!
She swung around to face the voice, her eyes widening upon the realization that it was in fact a real person (who, thankfully, did not look like a chicken) who was very tall. Definitely not a chicken, that was for sure. Chickens were short. And most chickens didn't have dark brown hair.
"Ohmygosh! You gave me a fright!" Ciel let out a short breath, one that had been momentarily cut off by the other girl's sudden voice. Her hands fiddled with the hem of her hat, before stuffing it in her satchel once more. She wouldn't be wearing it anytime soon, after all.
"Also no, I was talking about real chickens, I hate them so much!"

Cowboy Hat!
chickens were definitely a weird topic to talk about, but hey, it was hogwarts, wasnt it? the best place for wierd chatting topics. she often overheard plenty of interesting topics being discussed in the hallways, such as when to best dive into the lake, or weird ways to prevent chocolate frogs from jumping about...
"oh! sorry! i didn't mean to scare you," gwen quickly apologized to the girl. she noticed the girl had a rimmed hat in her hands, which she stuffed into her bag quickly after she had noticed Gwen come. "real chickens! has a dark history with chickens, i haven't met someone with that before! can i ask how this chicken phobia came to be?"
she hoped she wasnt prying into classified information. if it was, she would quickly draw back.
gwen started to piece together the pieces. the rimmed she was holding, and had stuffed into her bag a few moments earlier. fear of chickens... those lived at muggle farms or what were those called... ranches?? she had never actually met someone who had a background like that before, and it would sure be interesting to give it a start now. whilst she waited for the girl's answer, she stared out at the lake and the other students hanging out around it.

Hey, sorry for the late response!I was taking a bit of a break, but I'm back now!!
"My fear of those horrible chickens started one day... a very fateful and dark day."
Ciel's mind trailed back to the day she had found out she was a witch. Waiting for her family to get ready to go to church, right after her seventh birthday- the stars had aligned when the stuffed chicken she was playing with shot up five sizes and began to bawk!
While there was no damage done to the house or any of the occupants in it, Ciel had garnered a terrible fear of the small birds. The idea that one day the world would be taken over by giant loud chickens caused her to have nightmares for months on end.
"It was when I found out I was a witch, actually. I was playing with some stuffed chickens when they suddenly grew a billion sizes!" Ciel shuddered. "Just the thought that maybe one day the earth will have been taken over by giant chickens still scares me today. I won't even check the chicken coop anymore- those birds are evil!"
While chickens may or may not eventually become evil monsters, Ciel definitely wasn't gonna take a chance. Even though her mother insisted that the chickens in the coop would not turn evil, she still wasn't convinced. If there was ever a chicken apocalypse, Ciel would be the rebellion leader! Turning up to fight bad guy chickens like there was no tomorrow!
