Rebecca looked at his textbook with a furrowed brow. He was sitting in the shade of a gnarled looking beech tree, whose leaves were flush with the bright colors of autumn. He'd stuck his wand behind his ear and kicked off his shoes so his bare feet scuffled among the leaves as he tapped them in annoyance. A cool breeze picked up and sent ripples aross the glassy surface of the lake, but Rebecca paid the chilly weather no heed as he continued reading his assigned chapter in Magical Drafts and Potions .

The semester had barely begun, but already Rebecca felt like he was practically drowning in schoolwork. He'd spent the first few weeks of class only skimming his books, but now that the first real deadlines were fast encroaching he'd had to put in the real work. With a sigh he took up his quill and scratched some notes down on parchment. "Good God, I hope there won't be an essay on this," Rebecca mused and absent-mindedly scratched his nose with the quill (smudging a generous amount of ink on his face in the process). He snapped the book shut and groaned.

"If I have to read one more passage on Dogbreath Potion I will throw this book into the lake."

Anyone welcome, could be a good oppertunity for new characters to meet or developing friendships! I didn't plan a plot in particular

Ethan woke up early on a crisp autumn morning, eager to see the great lake at Hogwarts. He had heard so much about its beauty and wanted to experience it for himself. As he walked through the grounds, he marveled at the changing leaves and the way the sunlight danced on the water. When he reached the lake, he was not disappointed. The view was stunning, and he couldn't believe he was lucky enough to be here. He sat down and watched the clouds drift by, feeling grateful for this moment of peace.

However, his peace was soon interrupted by the sound of someone complaining about their textbook. He turned to see a student he didn't recognize, who was muttering about Dogbreath Potion. He decided to approach the boy in a friendly way, hoping to start a conversation. “Hey, what's up?” Ethan asked, trying to sound cheerful. “Are you okay?” As he waited for the other boy to respond, Ethan noticed that he was holding a book called Magical Drafts and Potions. He was also wearing a green robe, which indicating that he was from Slytherin. “I'm Ethan, by the way. Sorry for interrupting you. It's just that, well, I couldn't help but overhear you.”

"Hey, what's up?"
Rebecca jumped a little and dropped his book as he heard someone speak and noticed that there was a Gryffindor boy standing just a couple feet away. He was taller, with brown hair and a friendly expression.
"Are you okay?"
The boy now looked a little concerned at Rebecca's jumpy reaction.

Rebecca shook off his initial surprise and grinned up at the Gryffindor. "I'm alright, sorry, got lost in thought I suppose." He shook his head. "My potions homework is driving me absolutely insane."

The other boy's gaze flickered to the disregarded book at Rebecca's side and there seemed to be some understanding in his eyes.
"I'm Ethan, by the way. Sorry for interrupting you. It's just that, well, I couldn't help but overhear you.”
Ethan looked a bit sheepish, and Rebecca snorted in amusement.

"Honestly, thank you for interrupting me, now I have an excuse to stop reading the stupid thing."

Rebecca streched his arms above his head and leaned back. "It's too beautiful a morning to waste on work anyways. I've got half a mind to do something else."

He appraised Ethan with a mischievious glint in his smile. He was aware of the stereotypical rivalry some students engaged in between houses, but Rebecca considered the whole thing as silly. He didn't want to lose friends or make any enemies just because a grubby old hat was making him sleep under a lake. He thought it would be important to see where Ethan stood on the whole matter between Gryffindor and Slytherin.

"Well Ethan, my name's Rebecca. What do you think-- would it be taboo for a Gryffindor and a Slytherin to engage in a lovely stroll around the lake? Maybe you can hex me or something afterwards to set the universe in balance again."

The boy grinned at him and he couldn't help but smile back. The boy had brown eyes which looked like melted chocolate. His hair was a brown scruffy mess, but it only added to his charm. “Yeah, I know, potion class is absolutely insane. The ingredients are always changing, the instructions never make any sense, and worst of all, there's always someone trying to hex you.” Ethan understood what the boy was saying and nodded in agreement. No lies, potion class is completely ludicrous. It's like trying to put a puzzle together, except all the pieces are constantly moving.

Ethan chuckled when he heard the boy describe the book as stupid. He sat down next to him, “Indeed, it is a beautiful morning,” He felt a great sense of peace as he looked out at the great lake. It was a beautiful day and the sun was shining. He closed his eyes, letting the peace wash over him. “What do you have in mind?” He opened his eyes and looked at him intently, hoping to get a clue. However, all he saw was a mischievous grin.

Ethan was taken aback by Rebecca's words. It was true that they were from different houses, but he had never thought of it as being a problem. Slytherins and Gryffindors were notorious for not getting along. He couldn't help but laugh at his last comment. “I don't see why it would be taboo.. Well, I think that sounds like a lovely idea, Rebecca” he said.

Rebecca was relieved that Ethan seemed friendly. He was finding that he very much liked the other boy's earnestness. Rebecca had studied the serene look an Ethan's face when his eyes were closed. He looked so relaxed in that moment, for some reason Rebecca felt that he could never dare to try and disturb that peace, that he could be content to sit in the shade of this tree with this boy for the whole afternoon. That moment was broken though, and Rebecca once again felt the overpowering urge to be spontaneous.

"Well then!" he said, clapping his hands together brightly and casting a look to the boy sitting beside him. "I'm about to do something I will maybe regret in thirty seconds."

Rebecca got to his feet and started rolling up the legs of his trousers. Without hesitating even a moment he strode confidently towards the shore of the lake and waded in until he stood knee-deep in the frigid water. Rebecca shivered a little but found that he didn't mind it as much as he might've thought. It shocked some life into him and he turned, grinning back at Ethan and laughing.

"It's very cold!" he yelled cheerfully. "But nice!"

A few older students probably walking to their Care of Magical Creatures class heard the shouts and looked bemusedly at the idiot first year standing in the lake, but continued on about their own business without comment.
