Oli Hayes was born Oliver Hayes on the seventh of October, 2010, in a hospital in London. They are an only child, and live with their parents, and occasionally stay with their aunt and her wife. They have a few close friends from their school, and frequently have sleepovers.
They have been identifying as non-binary since kindergarten, after refusing to join the boys-vs-girls argument their classmates were having, claiming that if boys couldn’t wear dresses and girls couldn’t play sport, they would rather be neither. They haven’t been known as ‘Oliver’ since.
They went to a somewhat large public school, where teachers and students were, for the most part, accepting and supportive of them. Oli was considered the ‘popular kid’ in their grade, and was loved by teachers and students alike for being so open and friendly, always willing to comfort and defend others. However, their life was not without challenges. They used to love sport, the thrill of running around and working as a team, until year 3, when they were eight years old.
Their new sports teacher seemed to hate them from the moment she saw them. For more than a term, Oli just couldn’t figure out why, and tore themself apart for it. They despised P.E. and their feelings for the subject almost spilled over into the rest of their classes. They were disruptive in class, and they stopped doing their homework, instead hanging with their classmates. But at the end of term 2, they realised. They realised why the teacher hated them so much. Because they were non-binary. After that moment, they felt like a weight had been lifted from their chest, that they no longer had to prove themself, because some people just wouldn’t care. However, as they still had to attend P.E. for the rest of the year, it wasn’t immensely comforting. Oli started to do better in class again, but always tried to skip P.E. To say that they were relieved once the year was over would be an understatement.
Since that year, they get absolutely pissed when some people don’t treat others fairly, and when they’re misgendered, even if it was just a slip of the tongue, they feel that same emptiness, that same desire to prove their validity.
Oli was seven, and they were at the park, waiting for their friends. They were on the swings, when they fell off at the highest point. But instead of falling and getting injured, they floated, and made it safely to the ground without a scratch. When their friends arrived, they explained what happened, but the friends weren't convinced. So, they tried to recreate the event. And failed. Oli wasn't too badly injured, however they had to be taken home.
Oli has lived in the same house and gone to the same school their entire life, until Hogwarts.
