The weather was relatively calm and the temperature was pleasantly cool, a grand improvement over the (in Sophia's opinion) usually far too cold chill of the Scottish highlands. In fact, the cool breeze was even better for Sophia on this day, because at the moment, she was getting quite worked up from the mental exertion and stress of what she was trying to do.

"Up?"

Yes, she'd been at it for well over twenty minutes, but, as usually, she was completely hopeless when it came to anything broom related. She was getting quite frustrated with her own lack of ability, and her face was turning an awful shade of red as tears threatened to spill. With an exasperated voice, she tried again.

"Up!" she cried in her horrible desperation, but the broom on the ground stubbornly refused to do more than a slight wiggle at her command.

A few stray tears formed in her eyes, but they didn't fall. Not yet. Her breathing was heavy and her mind racing with fears of never learning even this basic aspect of Flying.

It wasn't even like she had any particular passion for the class, but she did have one passion: owls. She loved her best friend, Amelia, more than anything, and her biggest dream was to one day become an animagus - which she'd read about during her first year - and fly alongside her feathery friend.

Unfortunately, Sophia knew that the odds of her animagus form being that of an owl were highly unlikely. It didn't help that she was terribly afraid of heights, and she was completely useless on a broom.

She'd wanted so terribly much to simply not take Flying in her second year, but that wasn't much of an option if she wanted to learn to grow past her fear and have a chance at becoming an animagus with an owl form some day, so she had taken the class. Hence, here she was, alone, practicing as best she could so that she could at least learn the basics.

"Please, for the love of God. Up!" she begged the old Comet lying on the ground, pretending not to hear what had to be laughter from Amelia on her shoulder. She let out a groan and fell to her knees.

It was hopeless.

She didn't notice the sound of someone approaching, lost as she was in her gloomy moping.

Usually on Friday nights, Della would spend some time in the common room, reading and celebrating a night of not doing homework. Many times this had been a mistake her first year because she routinely underestimated the amount of homework she had. But surprisingly she had been using the planner she had made at the beginning of the year, and tonight, she was enjoying a homework-free night. In this planner, she also had made some goals for the school year—terribly unlike her—and she wanted to work on her flying skills outside of broom racing practice. She was captain now, and she felt as if her skill set should match the title to impress her teammates. She wanted them to feel that she was worthy of the head spot.

So as she walked to the area of the grounds designated for the flying class, her silver arrow resting on her shoulder, Della felt light and in good spirits, as one usually does at the beginning of the school year before shiny planners grow dull, and the true stress of the workload seeps in.

However, someone else was also using this time to practice their flying prowess, and it stopped Della in her tracks. It wasn't that she didn't want to share the space—she had expected that some students might be here. No, that gleam of blue hair was unmistakable. It was Sophia from summer camp.

Della wouldn't admit to herself that she had been dwelling immensely on her second kiss (her first kiss had been a matter of little consequence—eclipsed by the second that came only ten minutes later). Had she even given it serious reflection since summer camp? No. Had she found that all her doodles in her sketchbook nowadays contained freckly characters with cerulean watercolor hair? Yes. So, unbeknownst to Della, but beknownst to any outside observer, the lightness she felt suddenly disappearing and the butterflies fighting for dominance in her stomach made perfect sense given the current circumstances.

Instead, she tried to brush all those feelings aside. Sophia was clearly struggling with flying. Her broom wouldn't even lift off the ground. And Della felt the urge to be near her, maybe gently taking the Ravenclaw's hand and helping her hover it over the broom in the correct way—she pushed the imagery from her mind; there were too many butterflies in her stomach, and she didn't want to see what happened next.

So she rationalized her urge to be near the girl. A broom captain should never let someone struggle like this. It was her duty to help. Yes, that was the reason that explained why Della walked right up to Sophia, smiling brightly.

"Hi there! Do you need any help? I'd be happy to offer a few pointers."
