Was This Meant For Me?
@Reena Delgado
Dove was writing to Father about how Hogwarts was for her so far. She wasn't sure how to tell her father, but... She was ready to get out of this old, crumbly school full of sparkles! She was sick of the slimy chocolate on her face, she was sick of the nasty every-flavor beans, she was sick of the-
Chatty schoolbooks.
Dove giggled to herself as she remembered her father's stupid joke. About how her textbooks would never quit talking about her grades, even at night. How the chocolate frogs were delightful and cute. How, every once in a while, you got a delicious, flavorful jelly bean from the packet of every-flavor beans, how she'd laugh when the beans could either make or break her day.
So now, instead of an old, crumbly school full of sparkles, it was a delightful, beautiful wonderland filled to the brim with magic!
Instead of slimy chocolate all over her face, they were amusing as well as delicious chocolate frogs! Instead of nasty every-flavor beans, they were unpredictable capsules that could either amaze or disgust.
And the schoolbooks respected her sleep schedule! She handed the letter and one of those sickeningly sweet sugar quills to the not-so-sickeningly sweet owl delivering her letter, as well as a scratch on the head and a wish for good luck.
Dove didn't want to make the five-story walk down to the Hufflepuff common room just this moment, so she decided to rest against the brick wall of the Owlery and open a nice, long book, so that she had an excuse to stay up here, when suddenly a love letter floated up and landed smack in the middle of the page she was reading. As she did, she saw a wavy-haired, tall girl looking for something, presumably the letter as she was the only one around. "Excuse me, um," She checked the signature at the bottom of the letter. "Reena, is it?" She stood up, legs shaking ever so slightly. "But, was this meant for me?"

Was This Meant For Me?
Reena's second year has been boring. Like boring with a capital B, unless you count the times it wasn't boring. She had plenty of homework, but that didn't mean she was going to do it right this very moment. She was pretty sure it was all due next week, so she had plenty of time. In fact, She even had time to mess with people. She had a whole stack of letters on her nightstand waiting to be answered anyways, and it was about time too. She had a feeling if she didn't reply soon, her friends would try and mail themselves to figure out what was going on. She crawled under her bed and held her breath, feeling around for her notebook with her eyesclosed. If she didn't see anything under the bed, it wasn't there. Hopefully she didn't get bitten by a spider or something. She finally grabbed her book and managed to hit her head while sliding her upper body out from under the bed, which felt great. She rubbed her head and grabbed a quill with some ink.
She climbed all the way to the owlery and sat down after moving aside the things on the ground in the corner. She put the ink pot down and opened the notebook to a new page and stared at it. She thought back to the letters she left in the common room with a sigh. It was too late now, she didn't feel like going back. She squinted and tried to remember what they had said but it was so long since she read them she couldn't remember. So instead she did the next best thing; she wrote a love letter.
Not just any love letter, but she watched the people who came and went and added that into the love letter. Soon she was describing luxurious jet black hair (an exaggeration. The boy's hair was jet black but not nearly as luxurious as she wrote it to be.) She took the blue eyes of a 3rd year girl and described how they sparkled, she took the freckles from a shrimpy ginger boy and compared them to stars in the sky. She couldn't keep back a laugh, until the sudden rush of an owl flying by blew the letter from her hand. She shot up. "Shit!" That letter was a joke. If someone found it- that would be so embarassing.
But sure enough, someone had her letter in her hand. Her heart dropped. Not only did this girl know her name but she fit the description exactly of the fake person she had written the love letter to.

Dove's face slowly relaxed into a smile. She handed the overly-detailed letter to Reena. "Yer mad for the person you wrote this for, aye?" She teased, sitting next to her then holding out her hand. "Columbia Peregrine, or Dove. A pleasure." Dove pointed at the letter. "So, freckles like a night sky?" She asked, visibly trying not to cry of laughter. "That's... Quite the poetic comparison." She shook her head. "Ain't sayin' I'm any better meself, though. I can barely write notes for Charms, so if I wrote a love letter, it'd be terrifyin'." She continued. "What's his name? Err, or her. Or them. I ain't care who yer into, main point is, their name" Dove smiled at Reena.
Though she wouldn't be caught dead admitting it, Dove wouldn't be too upset if the letter was for her. Sure, that's far fetched for meeting someone two minutes ago, but that's not to say she was particularly attracted to Reena; Rather she wouldn't be opposed to getting a romantic letter from her. She studied her. Quite tall, and her hair was a bit short. Brown eyes, she believed. A bit hard to tell. "Whoever it is, you've definitely got a chance."

Reena buried her face in her hands. "NO! No no no no- I'm not crazy for anyone-"She snatched the letter back from Dove- such a pretty name- crumpled it up and shoved it in her pocket. "See? I don't care about it." She awkwardly glanced at the owls, suddenly interested in the feathers. Quite nice feathers, actually. That was until Dove made a comment about her comparison skills. She looked back at Dove and saw she was trying to hold back her laughs. Seeing this, Reena felt the urge to laugh too. "Listen I'm running on 4 hours of sleep here tops okay? You can laugh." She crossed her arms in a relaxed sort of way. "Besides, trust me. The girl had so many freckles it looked like they were connecting. The nicest thing I could do was compare them to stars. " She gave a short laugh.
"Uh, well they don't actually have a name because I made them up. I was seriously just taking features from people who walked by, seriously. It's a coincidence that you match the description."Now that she thought about it, this girl did have freckles that were actually like the stars. Her eyes were such a pretty blue too. Basically, Dove had all the features a poet would die for. "But if you need to know, I really don't care about gender." She didn't feel like explaining that she didn't have a sexuality, that instead she always liked who she liked and it was never anything special for her.
Suddenly she felt extra awkward once again. "Soooo, were you sending a letter? I'm guessing it's not a love letter, then?"

She smiled as she looked sideways at Reena. "Won't tell a soul, promise."
Dove laughed. "No, of course it ain't. It's a letter to me father. I could never send a letter to one of them other people back at home; All unappreciative, anyhow." She smiled, then laughed. "Love letter! How silly, darling." She realized what she had called Reena and blushed. "I call everyone darling." She buried her face in her hands, in the same fashion that the other girl did, as her ears and face burned redder than a tomato.
"Ach, I'm sorry. I'm a total mess." She then took her face out of her hands. "So did that boy's freckles actually connect?" Dove smiled to make herself and Reena feel better about everything happening. "I mean, that'd be other-worldly. WAIT!" Dove gasped dramatically, turning to Reena and theatrically grabbing her shoulders. "COULD YOU MAKE OUT CONSTELLATIONS?! Because if so, I might just..." She made a fake choking sound, bringing the back of her hand to her forehead and falling on the floor.
She wondered if her little performance was entertaining Reena, or if she looked like an idiot. She made a silent prayer that the latter was not true.

"Ah, how it does stink to be poetic when another is not" Reena nodded sympathetically, in a really 'I- am - making - fun - of -poets - don't - actually - judge - me- ' kind of way. And then Dove called her darling. Reena blinked and raised her eyebrows. That was kind of weird, she had to admit. But the fact that she was still physically standing here just goes to show how much she could stand Dove's prescence.
Much more than the average being. Which made Dove above average. And looking at her right now, Reena couldn't help but agree with the statement. Dove was certainly above average. Thinking this, she decided to let Dove's 'slip' slide by. "Eh, don't worry about it. It's kind of sweet when people do it, kind of- classy y'know?" She nodded her approval after saying this and crossed her arms as she spoke. Dove recollected herself and moved made a comment about the freckles.
Ah, yes. The freckles. "They did! It was like lines across his face!! There were so so many! Like, think the brush strokes on Starry Night- but worse." She remembered the painting in great detail, maybe because she was a painter herself. Which reminded her, maybe she could paint Dove later. For PRACTICE! (jeez, readers- I can already hear the shippers) Then Dove gasped. Reena jumped and flinched, startled. Dove grabbed her shoulders with wide-eyes and Reena looked back with wide eyes as well.
Reena looked seriously concerned until she realized Dove was just acting. She smiled in relief. "You know, you actually scared me for a second oh my gawd." She shook her head. The acting wasn't even good! Like, very bad acting. But it was funny. "Yup! Pretty sure I saw Libra somewhere on there." She stroked a theoretical beard with her hand. "T'was a beautiful and poetic sight."

"How beautiful." Dove said in a horrible accent. "I can only imagine the pure glory of such a sight." She laughed. "Honestly, Reena, you're the funniest person I've met in this lame school. And back in Ireland." She paused, looking around and picking at her nails. She thought Reena was actually pretty lovely; Her personality, how she looked, and her sense of humor. Dove turned to study her closely. She had brown wavy hair, almost down to her shoulders. Her eyes were chocolate brown; they were actually sort of beautiful in a way. Dove thought that Reena would never like her; She had an ordinary face compared to Reena's. Lame pale skin, lame freckles, lame eyes that-
Oops.
She was staring.
"Eh- Sorry." She looked away, face burning red once again. Not this again! Stupid face! "I just, uh, wanted to look at you a bit more." She realized how that sounded. "I mean, no, of course not, no I didn't! I mean, yeah, you're pretty but, uh-" She looked at the floor. "I mean, what I meant was, you're just kind of pretty-" She mumbled the last part. Very quietly. She did think Reena was pretty, but really did not want to tell her as much as she thought that she might come across as creepy.

Dove thought she was funny. Reena broke eye contact. "well of course I'm funny, I'm me!" She crossed her arms in a mock stylish way. Then she dropped her arms and gave a curt nod. "all jokes aside, I think you're funny too. I mean heck, I just met you-" She shrugged dramatically and crossed the owlery. She stroked an owl. "I don't know, maybe you're really bad at jokes but just winging it pretty good." You could never know. Reena frowned as she inspected the owl. She was always pretty anti-social, so the way she was acting right now was pretty off. Maybe she and Dove just got along pretty well. That had to be it.
She turned around and faced Dove. "Uh, wanna grab snacks from the kitchens later?" So she could learn more about Dove besides their sort of similar humor. Dove didn't answer. Reena raised her eyebrow in a sympathetic way when Dove noticed she was staring. Watching her explain was sort of funny. "Hey- it's whatever. I know I'm fabulous." She gently flipped some of her curls. She turned away to hide her confused burning face. She was PrReTtY?!?! Dove really must have something wrong with her, because Reena was many things. She knew pretty was not one of them. She never wore makeup or dresses. Not. Pretty.
Dove, on the other hand- "Shut up Colombia Peregrine, obviously, you've got your head on backward because you're quite pretty." Was that... a compliment? Yeah there was definitely something wrong with Reena.

Me?
PRETTY?!
"No, you're the one with your head on backwards, IrEnE dElGaDo!" Dove laughed, sticking her tongue out at Reena in a playful manner. "If you think I'm pretty, either ya've gone mad or ya've come down with the plague! You're way more beautiful than me!" Dove smiled, awkwardly biting her bottom lip and yelling at herself in her mind:
COLUMBIA, WHAT WAS THAT?! BEAUTIFUL?! NICE GOING, GENIUS, YA RUINED YOUR CHANCES
"Uh, snacks? From the kitchen? W-With you?" Dove paused for an incredibly awkward period of time. She was lost in thought. Did this tall, attractive, athletic looking girl just ask her if she wanted to go out with her? Was this a date? Did it count as a date?
WHAT DO I DOOOOOO?!
Maybe Reena was right. She did need to get her head on straight! She was Dove! No, better yet, she was Columbia Harper Peregrine!
Came from a long line of genius, un-awkward, incredible, completely modest witches and wizar-
"I'd love to go on a date with you, Reena!"
Dove paused again. Her face was frozen in a confident smile, her eyes wide and showing the internal screaming she was currently experiencing. Slowly, she nodded, encouraging any sort of reaction out of Reena.

*sobs with writer's block*
Reena raised an eyebrow and became serious. "No, I know I'm not. I'm not saying I'm ugly but I know I'm not pretty. You, however, are. You fit the pretty stereotype." She gestured to her eyes and nice long hair. "Now, I can maybe make myself look prettier- like this." She broke eye contact and concentrated. Suddenly her hair grew longer with streaks of blonde.

"-then I'd fit the stereotypye." She wiggled her eyebrows and did a small little dance to show off her hair.
Dove froze at her question. Reena hesitated.What. What was going on in the first-year's brain? Gosh. She hated people for this very reason. It was a YES OR NO. DO NOT THINK. Then she saw the look on Dove's face. "Just as f-
A DATE.
ARGH.
AHHHHH. This was NOT A DATE. Reena was not someone who 'fell in love' who had 'crushes' *shudder*. She just thought Dove was pretty. Her face and hair turned bright red. "NO! this is not- don't call it a date." She huffed and was glad her now-long hair could cover her burning face. "Besides, I'm too tall for you." Her tone didn't say anything even if her choice of words were. She rested her arm on Dove's head. And smiled down at her.
