This year, George Henry had taken a very active role in meddling in the affairs of first-years. Finnegan had been repeatedly bothered for a trip to Hogsmeade, as well as a few dramatic encounters in the corridors between their scheduled meetings. He'd nearly flung dung at Sebastian Sorrel when they met in the dorms. And of the first-years he had met at the welcoming feast, he remembered Alma Stoll most fondly - sweet, intelligent, and a little bit nervous about the back-breaking dangers of broom sports. It reminded him a bit of Jake when he was in his first year. And the last thing the Hufflepuff needed was another Jake.

About a week after their first meeting, George would elect to sit not with his peers in fourth-year at the Hufflepuff table, but rather he would nestle himself up among the first-years, sliding in across from Alma and pulling up a plate for himself.

"Hey, Alma!" said George brightly. He was quite chipper in September, long before exams were looming and fresh off his summer time hibernation. The older boy reached out and took a big red apple from a bowl in the centre of the table, chomping into it and chewing as he continued to speak to the girl on the other side. "How've you been settling in to Hogwarts? Making many friends?"

He would nod along with whatever answer she might offer, although she wouldn't have long before George got into the real meat of why he'd sat down to bother a first-year. The boy wanted to be a good influence, whether she liked it or not. "You know, I find that being part of a team is a good way to make new friends. I'm really good buddies with the broom racers," he said, "and I saw that the Quidditch team is looking for a second-string chaser. Quinn's our Quidditch captain, he's the gigantic fella - he's the sweetest though, so don't be afraid of him."

The boy finally swallowed his bite of apple, smiling across at @Alma Stoll as he finally got down to his suggestion. "I just wanted to say that I think it'd be a really good opportunity for you to sign up for tryouts!" he said, beaming. There was a momentary pause, his smile shifting into a mischievous smirk. "...Which is to say, I've already signed you up. Your name is on the list!"

As she sat at the table and stared at her still nearly-full plate, Alma felt utterly bored from how breakfast was going. The mornings were never ideal for her. Sitting around your peers, having just woken up the minute before, chatting happily away. It all just wasn’t for her.

She rarely ever talked at breakfast, just mindlessly nodded along to whatever the first years were talking about as she tried to focus on eating the last of her food.

She was just contemplating getting up and retreating to the common room to get some extra study time in when none other than @George Henry slid into the seat in front of her.

George was a kind fourth-year she met at the Hufflepuff table during the sorting ceremony. From what she could remember, he was a broom racer and had a complicated relationship with the Ravenclaws. She was surprised honestly; why wouldn’t he be sitting with his fourth-year friends?

“Hey George! Great to see you again!” Alma said, watching as the older boy grabbed an apple from the middle of the table and asked her about Hogwarts.

“Oh, Hogwarts is just wonderful! I’ve been settling in just fine. And i’ve made a couple friends; it’s not like i’m super popular or anything, but the people here are so lovely.”

George mentioned the Quidditch team needing a new second-string chaser and she smiled widely. “Yeah, i’ve heard of Quinn! He seems like a kind person, i’m sure he’s a wonderful captain,” she said, not picking up the hint that he was so obviously putting down.

“I think it'd be a really good opportunity for you to sign up for tryouts!”

Wait. Was he actually suggesting she sign up for tryouts? “Oh, me? I’m no good at sports, no, but I hope they find a good chaser!”

“…Which is to say i’ve already signed you up. Your name is on the list!”

Alma’s jaw dropped. At first, she started laughing, breaking into a fit of hysterical giggles. It must be a joke, right? “Aww, you’re hilarious George! You almost got me!”

But then, she saw the smirk on his face, telling her that he wasn’t kidding at all. She put down her silverware and leaned in closer, lowering her voice as if she was about to tell him a secret.

“George, I can barely fly. How on earth am I going to play Quidditch?!”

"Oh, yeah, he's just the best," George said, happy to talk up Quinn any day of the week, but especially when it was to help the little badger settle in to the team she had been forcibly assigned to. He took another chunk of a bite from the apple as he watched the realization dawn on Alma's face, laughing with his mouth full and showing off his broadest grin as he chewed apple in the back of his mouth. "Oh, I'm afraid I did get you! On the list! As second-string chaser!"

Helping out the house was always such a joy, even if it did mean that some sacrifices had to be made. For instance, Alma would need to exit her comfort zone, and likely end up breaking a few bones in the process. But while lessons taught in the classrooms were good for many things, George had always believed that it was trips to the hospital wing that really built character.

When asked how she was going to play Quidditch, George shrugged helplessly, wanting to see her squirm a little bit more before he really let her in on the plan. She hadn't given an outright no, so he had a good feeling that this would work. She really did work just like Jake. "Of course you can fly, you're a witch," George said simply. "As for how you'll play... I dunno, just shove the quaffle through the rings, grab the snitch, Bob's your uncle."

George's pep-talk was punctuated with another juicy bite of apple, the boy cronching loudly on it as he considered what to say next to her. He'd never played a game of quidditch in his life, but he had flown a broom, and had done so considerably better than some of his peers to earn his place as captain of the broom racing team. Sure, maybe some better flyers hadn't taken the position due to their competing obligations, but it was much more flattering to believe that he was simply the best.

"Have you got time to practice flying with me today? I can get ahold of some brooms for us to practice with, and I don't think the pitch is reserved," he whispered back to her, enjoying the quiet exchange over the table. He finally set his apple down and focused on her entirely, nodding as though she was already in the process of accepting his offer. "It's easier than you'd think, I promise. I'll run you through some of the basics, do some maneuvering drills, and you'll dazzle them all with your performance. It's a cinch. Big Quinn'll be so sad if you back out, I've already given you my personal recommendation and everything!"

Complete lie. George thought it might appeal to her Hufflepuff sweetness if backing out would make somebody sad. "It'll be fun!"

Wow. He really was serious.

Alma groaned at his little joke and pushed her plate forward, suddenly not hungry as she crossed her arms onto the table and hid her face in them. It was a nervous habit she had developed when she was little, after discovering that her face got unnaturally red in anxious situations.

She peeked her eyes out at George’s pitiful attempt at explaining how to play Quidditch. “That is not funny.”

The loud chewing of the apple he was eating definitely shouldn’t have been as loud as it sounded in her ears. She felt absolutely ridiculous, she couldn’t play Quidditch! What was he thinking?! She pushed herself up from the table and stared wide-eyed at the fourth-year.

“Well- I mean, yeah I guess I have some time this afternoon, but…this- this is crazy! I haven’t played a sport since grade school! I-I’ve never even broken a bone!” she panicked quietly. She had no clue why they were whispering; it’s not as if anyone really cared all that much about their conversation.

Alma had a feeling he was trying to guilt-trip her with the Quinn and ‘personal recommendation’ bit. Now, that wasn’t to say it wasn’t working completely. She had always had an authority problem and a huge soft spot for letting people down. Wether George was telling the truth or not, she really didn’t want to disappoint anyone by backing out of the role.

“Well, I mean…I really just don’t know about this, George. That’s…a lot. I mean don’t get me wrong, i’m flattered you felt I was good enough for the team but let’s face it- i’m not!”

As she finished her rant, the facts of the situation started to actually hit her. If she backed out now, Hufflepuff wouldn’t even have a second-string Chaser, and George would probably be super disappointed. The last thing she wanted in the world was to let down anyone at Hogwarts, especially not her own house!

“Okay here’s the thing,” she took a deep breath, calming herself down and fidgeting with her hands on the table. “You’re a very sweet person, and I really don’t want to let you or the team down but, there’s just so many better options for this! There are lots of Hufflepuffs that would be great at Quidditch! You know, like…ones that aren’t deathly afraid of getting seriously injured!”

"Bit funny," George said defensively, leaning back with a frown as he saw that Alma wasn't quite as open to the idea as he'd hoped. That was fine. She looked quite fussy as she hid her face in her arms, seeing a bit of the red around her ears. He held his apple out a bit from his face to compare the shade, looking down at her.

He gave her a little wave as if she had just reappeared again when she rose from the table. "Okay, well, you're a first-year, so you're basically in grade school," George retorted, rolling his eyes. He'd broken several bones in grade school and healed by muggle methods, which was a lot slower and more painful than just chugging some skelegro and getting the nurse to wave his wand at you a few times. Quidditch players might not be the brightest bunch, but nobody had died playing the sport at Hogwarts that he was aware of. "You're not going to break anything, Alma, it's school quidditch, not the world cup. Don't be such a drama queen."

While he hadn't personally recommended her to Quinn, putting her name on the list was, in a way, a personal recommendation. It just wasn't a public declaration. But surely the fact he'd picked her out of all the others was enough to get her to go on, just for him? Even though it had just been because she'd admitted to being afraid of sports.

"Oh, I'm sure the team would appreciate the high regard you hold them in, Alma," he said, nibbling at a bit of the apple's peel between words. He chewed more respectfully, quiet and with his mouth shut, before swallowing and speaking again. "But I'm pretty sure as long as we can get you flying straight you can be the second-string chaser."

George shook his head as she explained to him that there were better options for this. Unfortunately not the case, judging by the lack of sign-ups on the sheet before George started putting down the names of random eleven year old girls he barely knew. "Well you aren't going to get seriously injured, Alma, the worst thing that happens is you get bludgered a little bit, and that's never hurt anybody!"

It definitely had. Still, he pressed on. "Relax. Okay, we'll go practice flying, and you'll feel way better about it once you get a little practice. Plus, it's a great excuse to get your own broom, which is awesome. The school brooms are rubbish - I doubt a bludger would even be able to catch you if you had a proper broom," he said, talking her up despite never having seen her performance. Of course, if she was able to cast a spell, she was able to use a broom. In George's mind that made her as good of a quidditch player as any he could imagine.

"If there really are better options they'll take you off the team. Don't you want to find out? What if you're destined to be next star chaser for the Holyhead Harpies or something?" he asked, with a hopeful twinkle in his eye. Shining with the hope that this would not be a total disaster... and that maybe, even something good could come of it. The genuine words of encouragement that he said next were probably the kindest thing he'd ever said to another student. "I never thought I'd be any good at broom racing but now I'm the team captain. You can do it!"

“You know what I mean, muggle school! Have you ever played a muggle sport? Death traps, I say,” she said, cringing at the memories of falling on her face and missed swings.

“And I am not being a drama queen,” she huffed. Okay, maybe she was being a bit of a drama queen. She needed to calm herself down a bit, so she counted quickly to ten in her head.

“Sorry,” she mumbled. “These things just freak me out. Practice later today would be a great idea, I don’t want to let you down by quitting…”

She knew George was lying about the whole bludger spiel, but she didn’t comment on it. She could name at least five players she knew of who were seriously injured by bludgers. It was an 150 pound iron ball for christ sake! It was bound to leave some marks.

She did feel a little more at ease with his next words, though, softly smiling at her plate. He could be very persuasive when he wanted to be. “I suppose you’re right about that, i’ve heard real bad things about those school brooms.”

She smiled even more at the mention of the Hollyhead Harpies. They were her mother’s all-time favorite team, and Alma even had a few posters stashed in unpacked suitcases that she had yet to hang up. George was being so sweet right now, it really made her want to go through with being on the team. “You really think so?”

“Okay alright, i’ll try. But if I get sacked by a bludger and end up in the hospital wing, I ask that you please visit me and help me write the owl to my parents,” she said, really only half joking.

"Kicked a football once. Nightmare," George said solemnly, with a haunted look in his eyes. He'd never really had the attitude required for team sports at a young age - it had taken until he was a teenager when he decided that he was desperate enough for friends that he should captain a sport. At least then there would be four people who had to at least pretend to like him. "But this is way more fun than any muggle sport you've ever seen. Plus - quidditch players are cool. Mostly..."

Seekers were a bit twiggy, but that could be overlooked. Was she being a drama queen? "Surely," he said. But in fairness, he'd opened her morning with a bit of dramatic news before she could even have her toast and eggs.

He was making a lot of big promises to Alma. He'd train her to fly well, maybe she'd be a star player one day... while George was never that much of an optimist, it sure paid to play the part. With a new broom and a little luck, she might be passable. "Yes! Really, it's a wonder they still let us fly on them... you'd think they would update the inventory, but I swear some of those things are from like, the nineties..."

Clearly, the Harpy talk had struck a chord with Alma. It was no wonder - an all-lady quidditch team had to be inspiring for any young girl who had recently been forced to become an aspiring quidditch player. Even George had to admit that they were the most stylish of all the teams in the British league.

"Of course! I'll visit you and you'll get some free sweets for your trouble," George said. Sweetening the deal with candy was always an effective persuasive technique. "And you can blame it on me when you tell your parents, not that they'll actually know who I am. Hopefully, at least..."

Well, that was an easier matter to settle than he had anticipated. George went back to quietly munching his apple as he settled back in his seat, looking back up the table toward his friends that were more his age. Was it rude to drop that on Alma and then run away? Probably... but George still rose from his seat, giving her a big thumbs up. "Eat a good breakfast, you'll need your energy!"
He will leave shortly after to return to his friends, unless Alma wants to stop him! Otherwise, all done.
