The Equalizer

Valentin walked out in front of the players, who lined up along the internal rim of the pitch at the London Quidditch Stadium. Silver Arrow in one hand as he ran the other through his silky, freshly-washed hair, Valentin’s eyes automatically scanned what condition each player’s broom was in after the chaos they’d endured yesterday, playing different positions than each was originally trained for. To Valentin’s right stood Sergei, who had gladly followed the crew all the way to London for a break from his usual estate duties.
“For today, there is no quaffle, no snitch, and no bludger. There is only you and your broom now, and you are both predator and prey. Your task is to blatch and avoid being blatched. The last person in the air will get their equipment cleaned by the first person knocked down. Sergei will be on save duty-- you know, in his hayday, he once caught three people on a broom in just one round. You will be safe with him.” Valentin patted his sheepish butler on the shoulder, causing Sergei to light up like a summer festival at night. Bowing his head slightly, the salt-and-pepper-haired Russian beamed as he patted his massive Pine Chopper broom with pride. The broom was basically an entire tree, dwarfing Sergei with its length and downright excessive foliage. Yet, the vehicle certainly looked comfortable even for multiple riders, complete with a metallic framed seat, a windshield, and stirrups.
“Thanks to Sergei, your captains will help show you firsthand why we subject you to accuracy and evasion drills so often. However much larger an opponent may be, the sky allows someone with excellent technique to vanquish someone of any size. This is the power of blatching, the great equalizer. If you doubt this for even a second, I will show you myself why strength isn’t everything. Now, let’s get going, and on Sergei’s mark, begin.”
