History/Background Story: Jordyn’s birth was a welcome surprise to both her parents who had been convinced they weren’t able to have children. Jordyn’s mother, Niecy, was an American muggle who’d met her father while on a summer trip backpacking with her friends. After a pickpocket snatched her wallet, Jeremy, Jordyn’s father, chased the thief down, for a brief moment, forgetting he could have summoned the wallet with a flick of his wand. So impressed and appreciative of his heroics, Niecy offered him a pretty nice payment for going out of his way but he just stared at it as if it was a foreign object and handed back with a claim that he had no use for it. So instead, she invited him out for a meal and they were nearly inseparable ever since.
Jeremy’s family wasn’t at all welcoming to Neicy and decided to cut ties with him. While this hurt him, he swore he’d do it all over again given the chance. Jordyn’s arrival only reinforced this.
While her family through her father was unreachable, Jordyn found she had quite a few cousins through her mother and although they tended to poke fun at her accent and the clear cultural differences, they never made her feel unwelcome. The only problem was the distance and cost to travel to see them. The states weren’t exactly a road trip away and with cell phones being a big thing in the muggle world, they didn’t bother to write much.
And so school became the next best thing. Jordyn’s mother enrolled her in Primary School, hoping it would allow her to be more social with other children her age. However, children were notorious for being brutally honest and they didn’t spare Jordyn, even a little. In fact, she returned home her very first day with tears about how the kids had made fun of her father’s robes. It seemed her reaction was enough to make her a target of sorts and soon enough everything from her father’s attire to her mother’s strange way of talking was on the table for criticism. Over time, Jordyn learned to keep to herself and find ways she could have fun without them. Books became a safe haven for her and the very best of her friends included the family owl, Jinx and gaggle of ducklings at her favorite pond who just so happened to witness her first signs of magic.
At about five years old, while visiting the ducklings, Jordyn nearly fell into their pond. She’d lost her footing, running over to greet and feed them. Fear struck her cold as she, what she imagined, fell in slow motion. But just as she made contact, she bounced right off the surface as though it were a trampoline. When her parents reached her, her mother was crying and her father was beaming. His little girl was a witch and so help him, she was going to Hogwarts.
Knowing that she’d one day go to a school with other children who wouldn’t find her father strange or her mother foreign made her happy. Her father told her there were far stranger things in the magical world. Even so, he didn’t want her to feel so disjointed from the other half of who she was or become like his family who separated themselves entirely from muggles. So he encouraged her to be proud of it all. Of being half-blood because she got to be a part of two worlds equally and that was nothing to be ashamed of. She took these words to heart but even still, she couldn’t wait to go to Hogwarts.
And so, when her letter finally arrived, it was the cause of much celebration. Her mother cried even harder than when she showed signs of magic, this time because her baby was going off without her. And her father, well if he could have announced it on the muggle news, he would have. But out of all of them, no one could be more thrilled than Jordyn, who had nearly dragged her parents around Diagon to see everything she didn’t need but was convinced she did. She wanted all the spell books, beyond her year or otherwise, unicorn horns for potions she couldn’t brew yet but was totally struck by the broomsticks. And it took her father promising to buy her one only after she’d had a year’s worth of flying lessons at school which was just his way of getting out of letting her down. She’d missed the notice on her letter that first years weren’t allowed to have them. So he could put it off for another year at least.
Before they knew it, it was time to head to the train station. There were tears, laughter, hugs and well wishes for the coming school year. Jordan promised to write, be good and make lots of friends.
