The Train to Hogwarts  Open   Closed
Athena looked at her mother and then at the train. Her father had not come and she had to keep this secret from her father.

"I will never forget the day I went there. You will have so much fun at school, Athena."

When Athena returned to her mother, she saw that her mother was more excited than she was.

"Athena, we've talked about this, but it's better that your father doesn't come Muggle. Besides, if he had come, he wouldn't have let you have your stuff."

Athena glanced at her bag, then looked at the bow and arrow in her hand. Her mother might have been right, and she relaxed a little at the thought. Feeling cold metal coming into her hand, she looked at her hand and there were large oval yellow metals

"These are sorcerers' money. In case you get hungry. But don't buy anything with peanuts."

Finally, when it was time to get on the train, he said goodbye to her mother and started walking towards the red train.

Almost everywhere on the train was full. Finally she found the compartment with only one person and asked.

"Everywhere is full, is this place empty?"

Athena is waiting for the girl's answer at the door.

Paisley felt as if she had rather gone in a circle.
She hugged her mother and father, waved to her brother, and walked grimly onto the train. Paisley, who was only thirteen, had a tendency for being a tad dramatic at times. She had barely uttered a "goodbye" to her family, and in the car on the way to the station, she had been even more desolate. Her parents and brother continued to ask what was wrong, but she had no idea how to put it into words.

She was excited for school, yes, but she had much more important things than academics plaguing her mind.

Two years ago, on her first day of school, she had no friends. She had soon met a few people who she considered to be her best friends, but over the summers, Paisley hadn't been very good about keeping contact. Last year she had felt their friendships fading, and this year that feeling was even stronger. She passed a few familiar faces on the train, people who she had once even considered to be best friends, but they might as well have been strangers now.

She wasn't used to this feeling. Usually she was good at keeping friends, but Hogwarts made everything harder. When she was away from her family, she missed them, and when she was away from her friends, she wanted to return to them. It was an unfair trade: friends or family.

She sighed. Of course, the loss of her friends was entirely her fault, but that didn't make it hurt any less.

Like always, the train was milling with first years with wide eyes and heavy bags. Seeing them brought a slight smile to her face: at least she didn't have to do her first year over again. There were things she had done then that she was glad to forget forever.

As she neared the back of the train, and continued to pass familiar face after familiar face, she felt alone. Perhaps even useless. There wasn't a single person who would rather talk to her than any of their other friends.

She hauled her luggage through the train even further, firmly telling herself not to cry. So what if she didn't have any friends? So what if she didn't have anyone important to return to, at home or at Hogwarts? So what? She would find an empty compartment and sit there alone for the whole train ride. She had a few sickles to spare for candy, and she was glad that she wouldn't have to share with anyone.

That's right: her, Paisley Brown, wasn't sad that she would have no friends this year at Hogwarts. In fact, she was very, very glad about it.

When she came to the back of the train, she realized that there were no empty compartments. All of them had at least one person sitting inside. All of her plans had been foiled. She looked around at her options.

She could sit in the compartment with only one empty seat, the compartment with only one filled seat, or the one right beside her, where the girl was standing directly in the doorway.

She went for the third option.

"Excuse me?" she said, trying to speak over the loud chatter of the train. "Can I sit here?"

She realized the girl in front of her had probably just said the same thing, because she caught sight of a third person in the compartment. She made eye contact with both of them, and a small, friendly smile came to her face. Maybe none of us know each other. That would be a miracle.
