Professor's Office

On the door, made of dark, heavy wood, hung a sign. It was slightly lopsided and haphazardly written, the letters uneven and not quite centred, closer to the right edge of the sign than the left, as if someone had started writing and misjudged just a little how much space the text would need. Perhaps it would be replaced with a more permanent one in the months to come, but more likely, it would stay there until the office's owner had gotten so used to it that she barely even saw it anymore.
It said:If the office door was closed, it would indeed be locked; unless on those rare occasions that there were muffled voices audible behind it, indicating there was already a visitor present, and privacy was requested. You can knock on the door,
but I'm probably at Prof Takagi's office.
Try there.
Don't even try breaking in if the door is closed.
I'm watching you.
At all other times, the door was open, allowing visitors a look into the well-kept chaos that was Méabh Regan's workspace. Shelves lined the walls, from floor to ceiling, filled with books and rolls of parchments, glasses of ingredients, pouches of various sizes, oddly shimmering vials. There was a mint green plush bunny sitting on one of the lower shelves, seeming a little out of place. One corner of the office was oddly occupied by an unnaturally large, flowering plant, that had grown halfway up one of the bookcases, making it mostly unusable. It bore dark purple blossoms speckled with white, given the impression of a night sky.
Mixing with the light, flowery scent, were the smells coming from various cauldrons in the small room, brewing potions that were deemed unsafe or too sensitive to be kept in the classroom. There were almost always at least two fires burning below one cauldron or the other, keeping the room warm despite its location. The mixture of scents was not always pleasant, but rarely truly pungent.
Finally, squeezed into a corner of the room almost as if an afterthought, was a heavy oak desk and chair. The chair's velvet cushion had clearly seen better days, but it was probably comfortable enough, not that anyone would usually sit on it. Instead, it was often stacked with parchment, student assignments graded or ungraded alike. The desk was in a similar condition, littered with scrolls, quills and ink, some precariously stacked books. A picture frame held the moving photograph of a group of four women of different ages, laughing into the camera, and then a small, black and white picture of a man, tucked into the side of the frame, often with a knowing smile on his face.
It was obvious that the desk served more as a convenient storage of things, actual work was being done elsewhere, and the professor could rarely be found sitting at the desk, instead rummaging through shelves and drawers, or carefully stirring one of the potions.
The entering student might notice that Méabh Regan looked possibly a little different than she had in class that day, perhaps her hair had changed, or she seemed to have grown a few inches as she reached for an item on a higher shelf. Either way, when she noticed someone at the door, she turned around, eyebrows rising.
"Come in!" she prompted, waving at the visitor. "Let me just finish this... Alright, that looks good. What can I do for you?"
OFFICE: OPEN
This thread is an IC RP thread where you can interact with the Potions professor. Accordingly, all regular site rules with regards to roleplaying will be in force and all posts must be at least 200 words. Only one student is allowed at a time, and Professor Regan will only be available for interaction when the office is marked as open. As a reminder, please do not god-mod the professor, outside of what has been written in the opening post, or ask questions about the OOC homework system.
Visitors can choose what they notice about Méabh's appearance upon first entering. The choice will decide the mood she's in and how she interacts. If you don't specify, I will make a choice for the interaction. You can select one of the following:
Reducio1. Nothing in particular. Brown eyes, brown hair falling down her back, likely tied up in some way.
2. Hazel eyes.
3. Hair is short, bright pink, and spiky.
4. Eyes are green.
5. Subtle, but eyes and hair are darker than usual.
6. Hair has a red tinge... so do the eyes.
7. Hair has orange tips.
8. Hair seems to be changing colour slightly.
9. Is her nose smaller than usual? Her eyes closer together?
10. One of her eyebrows is blue.

"Miss Root! Yes, right," Méabh replied, distractedly reaching for a pouch on her desk. She could vaguely remember the girl from class, although memorising this many students staring back at her in such a short time was a challenge even for someone who prided herself on being observent. Méabh hesitated, then set down the pouch and picked up the glass jar next to it. Yep, that would surely have screwed up the Blood Replenishing Potion she was brewing. Where was her head today? Straying where it shouldn't be, clearly.
"Is one of my..." she repeated, confused, reaching up to touch her left eyebrow, then paused. Right, yes. "It helps me focus better," she proclaimed cheerfully, which was a blatant lie, pointedly setting down the jar on the table. She clearly shouldn't be brewing anything at the moment, her focus was all over the place. "Here, I'll fix it." A quick flexing of her will, then both of her eyebrows were blue, and she cocked her head at her visitor and flashed a cheeky smile. "Is that better?"
She gave her brewing potion another sideway glance, judging it should be good for another few minutes before she had to continue. "How can I help you, Miss Root?"

Over the past year or so the subject of Potions had become quite the highlight for Howard. What had started as a budding interest had blossomed into quite the passion for the young man. Perhaps it reminded him a bit of his childhood, before his whole world had been turned upside down, when he would watch his parents run their small bakery. Simpler times. Though brewing a potion was quite a bit different than baking bread, there were some similarities. The careful measurements, precise timing, following the recipe to a T. All so simple, yet complicated at the same time. Or perhaps it was just the process itself that attracted him so. Something you could actually put your hands on in a world filled with the swish and swash of wands. With care and practice Howard could see the outcome of his hard work and he was filled with pride every time he held a completed vial in his hand. Yet what was he to do with all of this?
When he had done so well in his Potions OWL, the passion for the subject had ignited further. Would Howard become a master in the trade, maybe not, but this was something he was skilled at and the older he got, one question became more pressing. What would he do after Hogwarts? The young man was now in his sixth year. He had chosen the courses that he would pursue to the NEWT level, but what did that mean for his future? That question was on his mind as he made his way down into the dungeon of the castle toward the Potions classroom. However, as he approached the room he would spy Professor Regan’s office door ajar. Perhaps she had some advice for it all.
Howard’s long legs would pivot and he would soon be passing the threshold of the office with a gentle knock and a hello. “Hi Professor Regan.” His crimson eyes would meet with her brown…no. Howard squinted slightly as she looked back at him with bright, green eyes. He shrugged it away. Much crazier things had happened in this wild castle than eyes changing color. “Do you have a moment to chat?”

It was one of those odd days when nothing you did felt quite right. The air smelled wrong, the food wasn't appetizing, and no matter what she did, Méabh's thoughts kept drifting to how long it had been since she'd visited home. It was distracting enough that her appearance shifted, the way it had done when she'd been a child. Hogwarts was great, but there was nothing quite like the shores of Ireland. She should go back soon... Perhaps for the next break. Her morai wasn't getting any younger.
Méabh still mustered a smile at the knock, perhaps a little more melancholic than usual, then raised an eyebrow when she recognised the student. She'd had half a year now to match student faces to names, but even if she hadn't, this one would have stuck out. For one, NEWT level classes were significantly smaller than those in lower years, and Howard White was... well, something of a celebrity at this school, she supposed. School champion, and all that. He'd also been one of the sources for the errand she was involved in. Additionally, he seemed to have a decent affinity for potions.
"Mr White!" she returned the greeting, the vague smile growing clearer as she focused her attention. "For one of my best students? Always." She turned down the heat on her potion, judged it was good to simmer for the meantime, then gestured towards the chair for visitors - the one and only flat surface in this office that was usually kept clear of clutter. Her own chair wasn't usable; if she wanted to sit, she'd free up a corner of her desk. "Sit, if you want. Or don't, if you'd rather stand. What can I help you with?"

OOC: Sorry for such a late response. I must have overlooked it in my notifications.
Howard noticed that Professor Regan's smile carried a hint of melancholy with it. His eyes connecting with her now green ones again in a search for any meaning behind it. Thoughts of his friend Alan came to mind when he realized that Méabh's eye change might be similar to what often happened to his best mate. Would it be ok to ask? Howard was still unsure of protocol when asking others of their abilities or racial make up. Not a huge deal in the Muggle world as long as respect is maintained, but the Wizarding world was a bit weird about such things. However, as she announced his name and brightened her smile, he would refocus on what had brought him here in the first place.
Howard couldn't help the almost bashful smile that found its way to his lips when she praised him for being a good student. He was not often one to get embarrassed and many knew that he had a bit of an ego that he loved to have stoked, but there was something about a professional praising his ability that really made him feel accomplished. "Thank you, Professor. It's easy when you have such a great teacher." It was a bit of a suck up move. He didn't care though. His love for potions was strong and why not keep this relationship buttered. Howard took the seat that was offered to him and thought back on his concerns before continuing.
"So, I've kinda been stressing graduation. I know I've got a while to go, but for whatever reason I just can't shake the thought as of late." Howard had well over a year and a half to go, yet it felt pressing all the same. "I just don't know what I'm going to do after school. I mean, I'm pretty good at a few subjects, but I don't know what that means for life after Hogwarts." It surely wasn't rare that a person would have no idea what to do with themselves after their schooling years had passed, but for Howard it carried even more weight to it. He was Muggleborn, not to mention a Dhampir. "I just don't know what I'll do." The inner worry was now clear on his face as he spoke his feelings. "Not just for work, but also I've never lived in the wizarding world before besides here at Hogwarts. Do you think...I'll be alright?"

Méabh snorted but smiled in return, leaning against her desk, easy and relaxed. She felt at home in her office, surrounded by her potions. While she was more of a social creature than her predecessor, this space offered sanctuary when she needed to keep her homesickness at bay. "Sorry to say I'm not susceptible to flattery," she claimed, which was, of course, a lie. She enjoyed teaching, she'd found out in the last few months, the N.E.W.T. level courses in particular, when the potions became more challenging and she could trust her students with the more dangerous but interesting topics and discussions without having to fear every lesson that one of the kids would chop their own fingers off. It was even more rewarding to hear that the students enjoyed her classes, too.
The gaze from her green eyes sharpened a little when Howard explained what had brought him to her office, turning from amused to keen, observing. It was... a valid concern, she supposed. Most kids wouldn't have any experience getting by for themselves yet, and Howard had, well, additional circumstances. The general vibe towards people like him - people like them, but Méabh had the privilege of having a talent that did not attract immediate attention and was not seen as very dangerous - had not been positive in the last few years, and Howard was one of the public faces that people would target their displeasure at. His position as the school champion and the media coverage surrounding it had made sure of it. He'd been made a symbol, for both sides, for better or worse, and Méabh wasn't sure that it was a good thing for this boy as a person. With the world's eyes on Hogwarts and on Howard in specific, she couldn't help thinking that maybe they weren't doing enough to protect him. Do you think I'll be alright?
There were, of course, reassuring words she could have offered. Promises that he'd be fine, suggestions that focused on the more immediate problem of future occupation rather than what seemed to be an overarching worry for him. But she wasn't going to, because it wouldn't help, and he deserved better than empty platitudes.
Some of Méabh's usual easy demeanor had slipped, giving way to something more calculating, but she sighed when he'd finished talking, then gestured towards the chair. "Sit," she invited again, offhandedly. She wasn't going to force him if he didn't want to, but this seemed like the sort of conversation that would quickly turn awkward while standing. She pushed away from her desk to walk around it. "Mr White - can I call you Howard? How old are you?" Sixth year would make him sixteen or seventeen. Nearly an adult, legally. She poured herself a cup of coffee from a coffeepot, then would offer one to him. "Coffee?"
Given his response, he would either receive a cup for himself or not, before Méabh wandered back around the desk, hands clasped around her own cup in thought. "Honestly, you seem like a bright kid." How was it that this job made her feel old? She wasn't even thirty yet. "No offense, I know you're basically an adult. I've seen you in Potions class, I can only assume you're doing well in other classes too. I don't doubt you'd be able to find your way, and being worried about the future is normal." Méabh's future sure hadn't gone like she'd expected, yet here she was. She paused, changing direction. "Can I ask how you're doing with all the fuss about the Hexwizard tournament? The media attention and all?"
No worries! It happens and I've been busy or I would've just poked you about it

@Méabh Regan
Howard cracked a charming smile as Professor Regan claimed not to be susceptible to his flattery. He had a sneaking suspicion that her claim was not entirely true. Not that there wasn’t any truth to his statement. Though yes, he was attempting to charm, Méabh was really a great educator. Howard had always taken to potions, but under her guidance he had begun to excel in the subject. “Never hurts to try.” He said while situating himself in the seat that was offered. As tempting as it was to keep up the playful back and forth, the discussion would soon shift to what had really brought him here.
“Yes, please call me Howard. Mr. White sounds too much like my father.” A loaded statement there as his relationship with his dad was very complicated, but mostly it just sounded too…old. With the fret of graduation hanging above him constantly it would be nice to just be treated like a kid. Not to mention that it was nice to be on first name terms with some of the staff. It added a personal touch to an otherwise professional relationship. “And I’d love a coffee, thank you.” He would gladly accept a cup of brew that was increasingly becoming more important to his daily routine. “I’ll turn seventeen in July.” Legal age in the Wizarding world. Hard to believe that he would soon be considered an adult in this community. Where had the time gone?
Howard nodded along as Professor Regan reassured him that he could rely on his talents and find his way into adulthood. Worrying of the future was something that all people go through and it surely wouldn’t stop after graduation. However, she would shift the conversation to something a bit deeper. The Hexwizard Tournament had brought a sense of excitement and adventure to his life, but it had also brought a lot of attention that he was not prepared for. He could handle the buzz around Hogwarts, but seeing his name in a National paper had done a number on his nerves.
“It’s been a lot actually.” The admission left his lips right away. Perhaps the need to voice this concern was more apparent than he realized. “I mean, once I was chosen I knew there would be a lot of attention my way, but the with all of the race stuff that came with it, I am a bit overwhelmed.” There was of course no hiding the fact that Howard was a Dhampir, but this information had now been spread across the UK’s Wizarding world. With how tense racial relations had become, could he be targeted? Would this affect his future as well? “Just seems like it might be hard, maybe a bit scary too for people like me outside of Hogwarts. Well, people like us if I’m not being too presumptuous.” Howard had noticed the changes in eye and hair color, as well as facial features over the course of their time together as teacher and student. “Is it as dangerous as it seems out there? May I ask of your experience with it all?”
