Closed Broom racing bruises

Athena opened her eyes, dazed by the light, she closed them quickly again. Building up some courage she opened her eyes and kept then open, blinking a few times. Trying to remember everything—anything, she looked around.
“Athena? Can you here me?” A nurse said from somewhere on her left. It came back with her name. The broom race! She strained to see where she was and discovered what seemed to be tent walls. She looked down and was horrified by what she saw. Scratches, bruises, acid burns. She quickly closed her eyes to avoid vomiting all over herself. She moved her left arm to scratch an itch on her leg but..
“Ow!” she cried, flinging it back down. When her wrist flipped back down she screeched. “My wrist! Ow!”
She kicked her legs to relieve some of the pain but had to stop and try to muffle her cry. Her left leg burned from the inside out.
“Oh goodness, ” she moaned, “the pain. Oh the pain.”
She realized she had an audience and shut her mouth. She also realized she had missed the best part of the race.
“Did we win?” she peeped, keeping her eyes shut. She would not be able to bear it if they lost, partially because of her. She would have to apologize and that sounded embarrassing.

Closed Broom racing bruises
George wrinkled his nose at the sight of Athena squirming in pain as the nurse tended to her. The poor girl was in her first broom race and got hit with it the worst of anybody on their team. They'd gotten revenge on Nicholas, but somehow George felt that wouldn't soothe Athena any. The team had still lost.

"Hello, Athena," said George, his face pulled into a grimace. He'd already been treated - only a few minor burns and bumps - and was back on his feet. Clearly, Athena had gotten the worst of it on the fall down. "You're looking well!"

Not as well as him, but he set the bar at 'alive', and by that metric consciousness was a huge step up. When she asked if they had won, George took in a deep, hissing breath through his gritted teeth. "Um... well... no... but you did a great job!" George said, giving her two thumbs up. "It was just an unfortunate misfire on the jinx, and also Hugh sort of... decking you... and all the burning..."

He shrugged helplessly. She'd put her name on the sign up sheet, so it wasn't like she could complain when she got to play the sport. It certainly hit a hell of a lot harder than any sport she'd likely played before, though. "It's alright. We'll get them next time. I think the Nurse said he was going to get you something for the pain," he said. His eyes darted around in search of the nurse, who was sorting through his inventory of bottles in the corner. "Oh, he also asked who should inherit your broom in case you die."

His impish little smirk was cleared right off his face by the stern glare of the nurse caring for Athena. "Just kidding," he said. "Uh, about the dying. I brought some candy for you but I don't really think you're in a spot to enjoy it yet, are you? Unless you want me to just... wrangle a frog into your gob while you writhe there."
