It was a sunny afternoon in Diagon Alley, and Guinevere, who was staying in the Leaky Cauldron, had decided to take a walk down the many shops with a few galleons just in case she wanted to buy something. This time, she was headed for the Magical Menagerie, because her parents had allowed her to get a pet, since it was almost her thirteenth birthday (well, it wasn't that close yet, but Guinevere didn't really care).
Walking into the store, she saw owls perched on artificial branches, snakes coiled up in enclosures, toads making that incredibly toad-y noise toads made, and cats stretching in their cages. Gwen had no use particularly for an owl; she already had one at home that wasn't hers, but the family's. And snakes- who had snakes for pets? She could not think of any sane person that would willing get a serpent for their pet. Unless they were in Slytherin and got one for the house aesthetic.
As for toads, toads were weird in the Slytherin's eyes. They just were too toad-y. So that left the cats to check out. Cats were always Gwen's type of animal, they napped, they ate, they ran around, and they made great study-buddies. Or maybe that was only Clarrisa's cat, back in Scotland.
Approaching the enclosure for the cats, she saw around five or so, some licking their paws on a platform, some scratching their claws on a post, and some play-fighting with each other.
She was particularly interested in buying the bengal, as they were called 'the dogs of the cats', and to get a dog and a cat, all in one animal seemed like a great deal to her, but they were quite expensive, and she had to save some money for other stuff.
So she looked at the next one the caught her eye: the brown tabby with the shockingly blue eyes. It was sitting on top of a cat-tree, and squatted, it's eyes on a white cat who was licking it's paws obliviously. Then, it pounced on the white cat, getting a startled mreoww! out of it. The tabby sat back down with what Gwen saw as a smirk, if cats could even smirk. This was the one she wanted, she decided.
Looking around for a shopkeeper, she dug out the needed coins. A kind-looking old lady came over, and said "Hello there, how can I help you today?"
"I would be interested in buying this cat, ma'am," Guinevere said to the lady.
"Call me Anita," said Anita kindly. "This one is a brown classic tabby, she's around two human years old currently, thirteen galleons if you decide to buy her."
That sounded nice to Guinevere. "I will, Anita," she said, turning over the coins in her hand.
"Okay, dearie," said Anita. She went to the storage rooms, her brightly colored floral dress swishing around, and came back with a grey carrier. She unlocked the enclosure door and scooped out the tabby, which Gwen decided she would name Aeluin, after her deep azure eyes.
Anita gently put the newly named Aeluin into the carrier, and led Guinevere over to the counter, where she gave Anita the thirteen coins and picked up the carrier with her new cat.
"Thanks for coming!" said the shopkeeper with a smile. Gwen smiled back and dipped her head in a polite half-bow.
With her carrier in hand, she walked back towards the inn with an elated half-smile playing on her lips.
