I had just gotten back from camp, Camp James. Camp was fun, but there is no way that Hogwarts camp was more fun. I was with my best friend Athena and my friend Rita. Then I was stuck with a bunch of muggles. I had brought some schoolwork along but there was never any time to do anything, and I wasn’t allowed to stay up and do it. I had time to read some of the passages, but I didn’t take much notes, so I didn’t really remember much of it. It was a great experience and I totally recommend.
Anyways, basically when I got back, which was yesterday, I actually realized how much work they give over the summer at Hogwarts. And it’s not just in one class, it’s in almost every single one. I had 2 weeks before it was due, but I had so much to do in those little 2 weeks. I had to do homework, practice instruments, buy school supplies, pack for Hogwarts, reply to all the letters my friends sent me at camp (I ran out of stationary) and well… that it.
One day, a bright and sunny day on August 16, I woke up, got dressed, went downstairs had breakfast and went back up to my room. I had planned on taking all day to work on homework, but my mom had other plans.
“Cara! Come downstairs now! We’re gonna be late for your appointment!” Mum yelled at me up the stairs.Wait. What appointment? I immediately thought to myself. Ohhhh right. My eye doctor appointment.
Ever since I was three years old, I’ve had glasses. I’ve hated them from the start and still do. My first pair were dark purple, but they didn’t fit after I was 7 so I go some pale blue ones. Then when I turned 9 my parents allowed me to get the pair I have now, white, rectangle shape.
Another thing you should know, is we live in a muggle neighborhood. There are a few wizard families around us but there are more muggles. I also go to a muggle eye doctor. All the muggles are convinced I go to some weird boarding school which, I guess is partly true.
We lived close enough that we just walked over to the eye doctor’s shop. We arrived and went on in.
“Hello, welcome to Richardson Eye Care how may I help you?” The receptionist asked my mum.
“Hi! My daughter Cara has an appointment with Dr. Richardson,” She said.
“Ok, your all checked in!” The lady said. We waited and it was finally our turn. They asked all the random questions like do I have headaches or pains or blah blah blah. They looked at my eyes, and made sure my glasses still were the best type they could be. They were. Then I waited for the doctor to come back, he said he needed his badge to log on to his computer. He came back with his badge and a few small boxes. He logged on to his computer and entered in a few things, and the handed me a small box. I read the front of the box and was shocked. Contacts. Wait… what!? Really!? I looked at mum, who smiled and I looked at the eye doctor.
“Well Cara,” he said in his German accent. “I think your ready to try some of these out. I’m wearing mine right now and I really like them. Your mum told me how much you don’t like them so I think you’ll like these better.” I was honestly speechless. A year ago I had begged my parents to let me get contacts but they had said that I wasn’t old enough and had to wait. And here they were saying I could!
“Really! Mum can I?” I asked, stunned that he was offering.
“Yes Cara. Your father and I discussed this last night. You may get contacts.” I was amazed. Then the eye doctor taugh me how to put them in, take them out and more. We paid for a years supply so I wouldn’t have to worry about running out while at Hogwarts. When we got outside I asked,
“Hey mum, is there a spell for using these or do I have to do this manually?” She looked at me and waited until we passed the muggles near by, and said,
No Cara. Let’s go pick out your brothers cake. Wait. Brothers cake? Hmm… oh my gosh! Parker’s birthday is tomorrow! I remembered the toy car mum bought for him as my gift to him, she had told me on the way home from camp. We picked out a white and red cake with race cars on the sides. On the top it said ‘happy birthday!’ We also picked out some other decorations, and another tube of wrapping paper.
When we got home, mum hid the cake in the fridge and I took all the decorations down in to the basement. Justin was down there practicing the drums. I listened for a bit, found a few things he could do better and tried to get his attention. He had his headphones on so I went over and tapped him on the shoulder. He stopped, took off his headphones and looked at me. He was shocked and and took a moment to collect him self. I stood there, confused.
“Hi… where are your uhhh.. glasses?” he asked.
ohhh!
“I’m wearing contacts! Do you like them!?” He hesitated for a moment.
“Yeah! It’s gonna take a while for me to get used to you without glasses,”
“Yeah…” Then I gave him some drum advice, teaching him a new technique so it’s easier to play faster. I hid the supplies, and went back up stairs. My parents wrote another letter about how I should join dueling, I just skimmed over it, and got back to my homework.
In my first year at Hogwarts I focused on having good grades and studying hard, so I never got around to joining the dueling team or some broom racing. This year I was planning on it and my parents thought I needed convincing. They don’t exactly know I was planning on joining.
That night I went down stairs after dinner and helped my mum set up Parker’s birthday surprise. I blew up some balloons as quietly as I could, and Justin hung the birthday banner. When we were finished Justin went downstairs and I went upstairs, and did some homework. Then I took out my contacts and went to sleep.
