Ellie thought that she would only get one trip to Diagon Alley for the summer, but her mom surprised her one day. She said that she looked over everything Ellie bought and that she was forgetting something. This of course, put Ellie into a slight panic because she was almost certain that she got everything on her list. She always took pride in how careful and prepared she was in these situations. Adrienne, Ellie’s mom, did not say much more, but took her to Diagon Alley and actually stood with her this time.

As they walked through the alley, Ellie was thinking about what it could be that she forgot. Then, her mom grabbed her hand and turned her towards the Menagerie. Ellie grinned from ear to ear. She had always wanted a pet, but her parents had never adopted one because they thought Ellie and her brother could keep each other company enough.

Ellie eagerly skipped her way into the shop, her nervousness completely fluttering away. As she entered, she noticed a lovely older woman not much taller than her tending to some guest at the counter. The rest of the shop was fairly empty except for the beautiful animals of course. Ellie wasn’t entirely sure what animal she was looking for, but immediately ran over towards the bunnies to start her search. She looked around and every animal she saw looked like they would make great companions.

She continued her way down the aisle, her mom closely behind, also excited. “What do you think I should go for?” she asked her mom. “Well, when I attended I had an owl, but I think you should go for something that will enjoy being with you while you read your books.” Ellie nodded, she would definitely love a companion that she could keep close.

She walked over to the cats and one caught her eye in particular. Ellie’s favorite season was always the winter and this kitten reminded her of just that. It couldn’t be more than 6 months old and had snowy white hair. Ellie was completely captured. The kitten looked up at her and she felt that instant connection. It started to make its way to Ellie. Not realizing the old woman had finished with the other guests and had also walked over to her.

“He is an Egyptian Mau. They tend to be extremely shy, but he really seems to like you.” Ellie thought to herself, shy just like me. “Do you think I could maybe…would it be okay if I…” She couldn’t get the words out. “Would you like to hold him, dear?” Ellie nodded enthusiastically. The woman gently lifted the little one and carefully handed him to Ellie. The kitten instantly balled up in Ellie’s arms. She whispered, “Snowball” and his big green eyes looked up at her. She felt like she could melt right there.

“Mom, he’s the one.” Ellie’s mom was already walking over with the woman to take care of the adoption. Ellie stood there a bit longer getting acquainted with her new best friend.
