Shopkeeper

Bubba walked into the Magical Menagerie with a smile on his face. He finally had enough money to buy a pet and had come here to do just that. As he walked into the shop the shopkeeper bade him welcome and asked how he could help. "Hello," Bubba said with a warm smile on his face, "I go to Hogwarts and I've come here because I finally saved up enough galleons to get a pet!" He was positively beaming and practically bouncing off the walls with excitement.

The shopkeeper gave him a warm smile, clearly used to having overexcited kids in his shop. "Well, we'll certainly be able to find a nice friend for you to take to school with you, did you have anything in mind?"

Bubba walked up to the counter so he was a bit closer to the shopkeeper, it just seemed polite. "I have it narrowed down to either a ferret or a cat. I like how energetic ferrets seem to be, seems like they'd really be a fun pet."

"Well," the shopkeeper said, stepping out from behind the counter, "Just a couple of things to keep in mind if you get a ferret." He said as he walked him over to a cage with three ferrets in it. "First," he began as one of the ferrets started to run around excitedly, "Ferrets like to have their own enclosed space to themselves, basically their own little burrow." One of the other ferrets came up to the side of the cage they were on. "Second, ferrets do produce a bit of a musky odor which you should keep in mind if you're going to keep your pet in your dormitory."

Bubba frowned, he liked the boundless energy the ferrets ran around with but also thought of his fellow dorm mates. He wasn't too concerned about a burrow of some sort, that could be easily put together for a ferret. The smell though, he wasn't sure if it was fair to put his dorm mates through the musky odor. He turned to the shopkeeper, "Hmm... I dunno the musk is a bit concerning, could you show me the cats, please?"

"Of course," the shopkeeper said with a smile as he turned and led Bubba to the other side of the store. Here there was a row of cages full of cats. Bubba wasn't sure which one he would like, but he remembered when he was four and they went to get their first cat. His father told him that the pet normally chooses the owner as much as the owner chooses the pet. He walked up and down the aisle, seeing if any of the cats reacted to him.

Two of them did, the first was red and looked a bit older. "Well it looks like you've got his attention," the shopkeeper said as the cat came ambling up, "This is a red mackerel tabby, they're run-of-the-mill domestic short hairs. They have a pretty wide range of personalities so you never know what you're going to get." He paused for a moment before continuing, "I'll warn you, he's a bit older and someone had to give him up, he was a bit temperamental, doesn't mix well with some of the other animals."

Bubba frowned for a moment, he knew a lot of other people had pets and didn't want one that would cause trouble with them. The cat didn't look too excited but had at least come out to see the new arrival. Most of the other ones were completely disinterested. He kept walking along the row of cages and he had caught another cat's attention. Bubba instantly knew that this was a Siamese cat. Their first cat had also been a Siamese cat and he had fond memories of him. This one was being cautious, it took a couple of steps forward and sniffed the air, trying to get his scent Bubba supposed. The cat seemed to think he was alright because it moved forward and then started rubbing itself up against the side of the cage, going back and forth. After a moment it gave a very soft "meow". The cat was very small, not quite a kitten but clearly very young.

Bubba looked at the shopkeeper and started moving his hand towards the cage, silently asking if it was ok to touch. The shopkeeper nodded and Bubba reached in and scratched the cat on the head. It immediately started purring loudly. "I think he likes you." The shopkeeper said with a smile, "Would you like me to take you out so you can hold him?"

"Yes please!" was Bubba's instant reply, he seemed to have made a connection with this cat. He stepped back and the shopkeeper stepped forward, he took out his wand and tapped the cage once. The lock clicked and he opened the door. He picked up the cat and carefully offered him to Bubba, who took the cat and hugged it loosely to the top of his chest/bottom of his chin and started petting him again. The cat immediately started purring again and started rubbing the sides of his head against Bubba's face. "I think we have a winner," Bubba said with a wide smile on his face.

The cat continued to purr as they walked around the store looking for supplies for him. He had off-white skin on most of his body. His tail, paws, and ears were all medium grey, as was his face. He had bright, vivid sapphire eyes. It was a case of love at first sight for Bubba.

"A couple of things to know," the shopkeeper said as he picked up the black basket Bubba had picked out as a carrier and they went over to look at beds and toys. "Siamese cats aren't ones to be taken on lightly - not that any pet is - but they bond strongly with a human and are very loyal. They also demand a lot of attention, so just make sure you'd prepared for that."

Bubba picked out a nice blue bed for him to grow into and as a toy, he got him a plush fish on a string attached to a stick. The shopkeeper walked Bubba up to the register and started ringing him up, asking "Have you decided what to name him?"

Bubba had already picked out a name, "Kalle." He said with a smile. He gently placed Bubba in the basket and locked the straps down before paying the shopkeeper. "Thank you very much." He said with a smile.
