The first day of classes had gone... decently so far. Not good, not bad, just... decent. And honestly? Esme hadn't exactly expected anything else.

Having not known about magic until just this summer, it felt like there was a lifetime of things she had missed out on. A lifetime of things she needed to learn, to know, right then and there. Even though the wizard born students were technically learning right along with her, they most definitely had the advantage of not being shocked every few seconds when something entirely out of the ordinary happened. Truly, the word "ordinary" was starting to not have any meaning anymore. Because if this type of stuff was normal for other people, and her ordinary was ordinary for her, could it all really fit under the same word?

Arriving at the potions classroom, the first year wasn't sure what she was about to walk into. After a slight hesitation outside the door, she stepped forward... and was greeted with a large array of different shelves, ingredients, smells, and of course, a whole bunch of other students. As she'd been doing the rest of the day, Esme immediately looked for an empty desk a little ways apart from the students that had already arrived. Yes, of course she was going to make friends eventually, but did it really have to be today? No! It was the start of the year, plenty of other days to make friends and sit with another person. At least, that was her excuse.

And apparently, an excuse that the school and curriculum didn't agree with at all.

Because according to the professor, they would be partnering up with someone today, and would be staying partners with that someone for the rest of the month (and probably longer).

Lighten up, Esme told herself. It's day one, you got this. Plus, potions class was one she'd been more excited for when she first received her schedule. Who wouldn't be excited, really? Learning how to make different elixirs and antidotes and even poisons was going to be interesting!

By the time the professor told them to choose someone to partner up with, Esme was in a much better mood—a whole lot more like her usual, cheery self. After watching the others pair up rather quickly, she turned to the girl sitting closest to her and hoped she didn't already have a partner in mind. "Hi!" Esme said with a hesitant smile as she tried to push away the little buzz of nervousness that appeared whenever she spoke to someone new, "Um, would you like to be partners?" Then, after a few seconds, as an afterthought: "Oh! I'm Esmeray."
